On this day 53 years ago in 1971 The Rolling Stones single "Wild Horses" was released from their album Sticky Fingers. Interestingly it was first released in 1970 by The Flying Burrito Brothers (with Graham Parsons) on Burrito Deluxe as the Stones didn't think the demo was worth recording fully. Others who have covered the song include The Sundays, Labelle and Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings. On First Aid Kit's "Wild Horses II" they sing "We played Wild Horses on the car stereo. You prefer the Rolling Stones' and I like Gram's."
This was the b-side to their 1993 single "Goodbye."

In 2012, the sisters performed the song in front of Paul Simon at the Polar Music Prize, and he rewarded them with a standing ovation.: www.youtube.com

Read the story behind this bittersweet folk song: ig.ft.com
Simon wrote the song as a thinly veiled message to Art Garfunkel, referencing in the first stanza a specific incident where Garfunkel went to Mexico to act in the film Catch-22. Simon was left alone in New York writing songs for Bridge over Troubled Water, hence the very lonely feelings of "The Only Living Boy in New York." Simon refers to Garfunkel in the song as "Tom", alluding to their early days when they were called Tom and Jerry, and encourages him to "let your honesty shine . . . like it shines on me".

Hi John and Owen,
Here's another end-of-school-year note and request! My 10-year-old daughter Tali (Tall-ee) and I listen to the morning show every day on our looong commute. The music, the stories, the special days (especially World Goth Day), all mean so much to us. Driving in a metal box down a dilapidated highway can be monotonous, even depressing. Your company kept our sprits up.
Tallee would like to request a song to celebrate the end of school. She's a big fan of Collect by Torres and Sabotage by The Beastie Boys. And for a completely random option, she also likes the Major General's song (I am the very model of a modern major general). We donated during this drive to show our appreciation for the music and the community that KEXP provides. Have a great summer!!

Thanks for the donor gifts. I got three compliments on the t shirt. Met a girl who listened to you as well. I've lost a lot in the month, but it seems that I'm not alone. Told her I'd request a song & one for myself, the same one I always do, but seems appropriate today. She wanted to hear the Beatles I am the walrus & I wanted to hear all the people who died, if you could fit those in, you'd make the day for a couple of people in Spokane very happy. It's funny how much attention I get just from wearing a t shirt from your awesome station.

The first Lightning Seeds single release, "Pure" is significant in that it was the first song Ian Broudie had "completely written and sung, ever".
He said later "I didn't think that many people would be interested if I'm going to be honest, I suppose I didn't have the confidence really and I wasn't in a band but I did want to put my music out and get it heard."
Nonetheless, Broudie proceeded to record "Pure" at a studio in Kirkby. 200 copies of the single were originally pressed, but after some radio play and attention at The Haçienda, the song became a classic. Well done, Ian.
Call A Doctor’s eleven songs are literally plucked from Kai James’ personal history, as he reworked older recordings with newer lyrics reflecting his past struggles as well as new anxieties that emerged prior to the album’s recording. “I’ve struggled with mental health for a lot of my life,” he explains, “and I went through a particularly difficult patch when we were making the album; the band had started to get some attention, and I felt an enormous amount of pressure to live up to it.” www.subpop.com

This is "transcendental outernational funk and psychedelic jazz from mystery L.A.- based collective Sun Atlas."
Little is known about Sun Atlas. The group members are hidden behind masks and costumes to keep their identities secret and to put the focus entirely on the music and oneness. A sense of community and universal spirit as an alternative to idolization and individualism is heavily reflected in their eclectic musical style.: mocamborecords.bandcamp.com

RIP Françoise Hardy who passed away yesterday at the age of 80. She was a French singer-songwriter and actress. Mainly known for singing melancholic sentimental ballads, Hardy rose to prominence in the early 1960s as a leading figure of the yé-yé wave. In addition to her native French, she also sang in English, Italian and German. Her career spanned more than fifty years with over thirty studio albums released.
New music from LA indie rock trio!
Brought together by their shared philosophies and love of 90's indie rock, they started writing songs and developing Easy Sleeper's distinct sound — drawing influences from Real Estate, Built to Spill, and the Velvet Underground. The band moved to Los Angeles in 2019, where they found community by hosting DIY shows out of their Koreatown home.
