In an interview, David Byrne said of this song: "We're largely unconscious. You know, we operate half awake or on autopilot and end up, whatever, with a house and family and job and everything else, and we haven't really stopped to ask ourselves, 'How did I get here?'" Someone wrote,"This song is 40 years old and it's makes more sense today than it did back then." See the video: www.youtube.com

Thus, we were very happy yesterday. =========================== "Only Happy When It Rains" was written and recorded between March 1994 and May 1995. It was written in sessions with band members Duke Erikson, Shirley Manson, Steve Marker and Butch Vig in Marker's basement recording studio, and recorded at Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin. In a 1995 interview, Steve Marker, the band's guitarist, said, "It's really just us poking fun of ourselves... We're poking fun at the alternate rock angst, wearing your heart on your sleeve thing and at ourselves for writing such dark songs."

"Back then, it was “all a mystery” to us how we came together to become a band, and 14 years later, we are bewildered that we have been doing this for so long. This song touches on love, life, death and loss." "She's a Mystery to Me" is a song by Roy Orbison, written by Bono and the Edge of U2. During a restless night of sleep in June 1987 in London during U2's Joshua Tree Tour, Bono slept with the soundtrack to the film Blue Velvet CD on repeat. The soundtrack includes the song "In Dreams" by Orbison. When he woke the following morning, Bono had a tune in his head which he assumed was from the soundtrack. He soon realised it wasn't, so he wrote down the basic structure of the song. Later that day he sang the unfinished song to the band at their pre-concert soundcheck at Wembley Arena. After the concert, Orbison paid the band an unannounced visit backstage, where a perplexed Bono played the song for him. The rest is, as they say, history.

“Lady With the Spinning Head” was a demo that went on to be used as a B-Side, and then was remixed and used again as a B-Side. Edge talks about the track and what it became in the book "U2 by U2": It actually spawned three different songs, “The Fly,” “Ultraviolet (Light My Way)” and “Zoo Station”. If you ever listen to “Lady With the Spinning Head” you will hear elements of all of those songs.

Ibibio Sound Machine will be here in Seattle on Tuesday, October 1st, playing The Nectar Lounge. -- “It is essentially about empowering and uplifting the women in our lives. The track plays musically upon the tension between the traditional and the modern; the arpeggios in the chorus were played on a Juno 60, and the west African vocal stylings of the verse provide a contrasting feel to these electronic elements.”

This song was written by Chris Butler, who at the time was a member of a popular Akron, Ohio band called Tin Huey. He got the idea for the song when he and the band's drummer Stuart Austin were at a local bar called The Bucket Shop. Chris noticed that the ladies at the bar were giving their attention to the lawyers and other white-collar types while ignoring the lowly musicians. "I got into this mindset, and it wasn't a pretty one," Chris said. "It was about women in a bar situation wheeling and dealing their wares, so to speak, for the highest bidder. And I was definitely the lowest bidder." -- When Butler formed the band The Waitresses, with Patty Donahue as lead vocalist, the band recorded the song for its debut album, Wasn't Tomorrow Wonderful?, released by Polydor Records in 1982. -- Ralph Carney, who was also a member of Tin Huey, played saxophone on this track. His nephew, Patrick Carney, is one half of The Black Keys, another Akron band.
