Angie in Seattle Hey John, it's my birthday! Last year you played me a set of "Alive" songs for my 50th and it made my birthday! (I was post cancer). Made it to 51! Can I kick it? Yes, I can. Thanks as to you all for constant support and daily mental health therapy over the airways. And seriously if I would have thought of a song request, Some Sunsick Day probably would have been it. Thanks for your mental telepathy! Angie in Seattle ============= This song by California psychedelic artist Morgan Delt was selected as a KEXP Song of the Day. 'Astral Weeks' did not originally receive promotion from Morrison's record label and was not an immediate success with consumers or critics. Its standing eventually improved greatly, with praise given to Morrison's arrangements and songwriting, and the album has been viewed as one of rock music's greatest and most important records (a reputation the singer himself has dismissed).

LCD Soundsystem will be in Seattle May 16th-19th at the Paramount Theatre! lcdsoundsystem.com --- James Murphy recorded Sound of Silver at the Long View Farm in Massachusetts, where he had previously recorded LCD Soundsystem's debut album. Sound of Silver was dedicated to the Bulgarian-born doctor, Dr. George Kamen (1942–2006), who pioneered group therapy and had opened a practice in New York City. The loss of 'someone' in the track "Someone Great" is thought to be about Dr. Kamen.

"The hybrid jazz supergroup featuring Kamasi Washington, Robert Glasper, Terrace Martin, and more keeps it exquisitely sparse and supremely chill...Their third album is a small step forward from their self-titled 2020 debut. The group’s roots still lie in ’70s soul, ’90s hip-hop and R&B, and jazz but they have further refined this mixture on Enigmatic Society, dampening down their sound to an airy velvet exhalation." pitchfork.com

Happy 16th Birthday Gresham! -- Lead single from TV on the Radio's major-label debut. New York band TV On The Radio exists like vapor: It's constantly shifting shape, occasionally cohering into something solid, then vaporizing again. That makes it difficult to describe the band's music or quantify what exactly it does, but the mutability affords limitless possibilities. If nothing else [the 2006 album] revels in the musical possibilities that accompany such stylistic freedom." bit.ly

The song integrates a 1970 recording called "Modern Dynamic Physical Fitness Activities" by Ed Durlacher, who was best known as a square dance caller. In his recording, he goes through some basic calisthenics, but Beastie Boys chopped it up to make it sound like dance instruction ("you will do this four times with the left... four with the right"). -- "Body Movin'" also sampled Graham Central Station's 1975 "The Jam", as well as "Oye Como Va" by Amral's Trinidad Cavaliers. --- beastieboys.com

Happy Birthday Billy Joel! Born on this day in 1949. "Yes, there was a Virginia. Billy Joel based his 1977 song 'Only The Good Die Young' on an actual high school crush named Virginia Callahan. After Joel wrote the song about this Catholic girl’s reluctance to enjoy some lustful moments instead of praying all the time, he asked his drummer for his input. 'I showed the song to Liberty (Devitto), who’s Catholic,' Joel recalls in the liner notes to a 2008 rerelease of The Stranger. 'He said, ‘Well, it’s true.’” americansongwriter.com

Happy Birthday to vocalist Dave Gahan, born on this day in 1962. Dave Gahan explained that "Enjoy The Silence” began as a “very slow, ballad-y couple of verses" but bandmate Alan Wilder and producer Flood converted it into the danceable new wave hit it became. At first, songwriter Martin Gore was initially not on board with the uptempo rewrite. "I thought the very nature of the song was, you know, enjoy the silence, so it ought to have a very serene atmosphere. It took me a while to get used to the idea, but as we took it further that way with the guitar riff, it really pulled together." www.depechemode.com

Joan Jett will bring her bad reputation to White River Amphitheatre on Saturday, August 3rd, 2024.: www.joanjett.com -- Speaking with Rolling Stone in 2022, Jett talked about her bad reputation. "I always wore it as a badge of honor," she said. "Because what people were saying to me was I had a bad reputation because I played an electric guitar and I had black hair and a leather jacket, and maybe I swore... So I turned around the meaning of it, and I'm proud of my bad reputation."

“What's Going on with Ordinary People” is the third single from the bay area artist's new Slumberland. “'What's Going On With Ordinary People,' like a lot of my songs, you can get the main idea in the title. We have probably all been wondering about this lately, with ordinary people jacked-up on propaganda, targeted advertising and general paranoia.”—Glenn Over the course of the last five years The Reds, Pinks & Purples have released six albums, several EPs and countless singles, all dedicated to breathing fresh life into the cerebral, leftfield pop that animated the gloomy teens, college radio DJs and record store clerks of the 80s and 90s. Such touchstones as The Go-Betweens, The Smiths, Magnetic Fields, Felt and more are obvious inspirations, but Donaldson’s prolific, prodigious talent for mood and melody have virtually created their own genre, and "Unwishing Well" is its purest embodiment yet. theredspinksandpurples.bandcamp.com

“‘Life is confusing and people are insane’ seems to make even more sense now than it did the day I wrote it,” Langhorne Slim says. “It might even be the most concise sentence I’ve ever constructed. I pray in my way that because this seems to be a fundamental truth, we can unite as human animals in the beauty and terror that is life, instead of dividing and living in fear. I believe in my heart that it’s possible.”
