James Murphy recorded Sound of Silver at the Long View Farm in Massachusetts, where he had previously recorded LCD Soundsystem's debut album. Sound of Silver was dedicated to the Bulgarian-born doctor, Dr. George Kamen (1942–2006), who pioneered group therapy and had opened a practice in New York City. The loss of 'someone' in the track "Someone Great" is thought to be about Dr. Kamen.
In January, it was revealed that Thom Yorke composed the original score for the film Confidenza, an adaptation of the Italian drama based on a novel of the same name.

The song integrates a 1970 recording called "Modern Dynamic Physical Fitness Activities" by Ed Durlacher, who was best known as a square dance caller. In his recording, he goes through some basic calisthenics, but Beastie Boys chopped it up to make it sound like dance instruction ("you will do this four times with the left... four with the right").

Happy Birthday to vocalist Dave Gahan, born on this day in 1962.
Dave Gahan explained that "Enjoy The Silence” began as a “very slow, ballad-y couple of verses" but bandmate Alan Wilder and producer Flood converted it into the danceable new wave hit it became. At first, songwriter Martin Gore was initially not on board with the uptempo rewrite. "I thought the very nature of the song was, you know, enjoy the silence, so it ought to have a very serene atmosphere. It took me a while to get used to the idea, but as we took it further that way with the guitar riff, it really pulled together."
