Paul McCartney wrote this as if he fell for a meter maid while she was taking his plate number. Said Paul: "I was bopping about on the piano in Liverpool when someone told me that in America, they call parking-meter women meter maids. I thought that was great, and it got to 'Rita Meter Maid' and then "Lovely Rita Meter Maid' and I was thinking vaguely that it should be a hate song: 'You took my car away and I'm so blue today' and you wouldn't be liking her; but then I thought it would be better to love her and if she was very freaky too, like a military man, with a bag on her shoulder. A foot stomper, but nice." (from Beatles 'In Their Own Words') bit.ly

The band sites the dystopian anime Akira as an inspiration. “I’m fascinated by that—falling in love at the end of the world,” he says. “The album is about protecting that tiny flame. The bigger Armageddon looms, the more precious it becomes.”

“When I first made that, I felt stupid,” French indie-pop artist Anthony Gonzalez said in 2011, the same year he unleashed the song. “It’s my voice under heavy distortion, and I was feeling so dumb doing those high-pitched vocals while my girlfriend was sleeping downstairs.” The song that made Gonzalez feel “dumb” ended up being the lead single for M83’s magnum opus, "Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming," Here's a 2021 retrospective on this song on its 10th anniversary: www.mtv.com. ilovem83.com www.kexp.org

Check out the song below, ahead of its 12" release for Record Store Day. Byrne wrote on social media, “The band told me that their song ‘Hard Times’ was inspired by Talking Heads, so I learned it and recorded my version of their great song with a horn section. This was fun!”

The inspiration for the title came from the band Arab Strap, who are also from Scotland and briefly toured with Belle and Sebastian. Lead singer and songwriter Stuart Murdoch admitted to Q magazine in April 2011: "It's about Aidan Moffat from Arab Strap. I never really thought about it at the time, but I think he deserves to be a bit peeved that we hijacked the name of their band. But it was an honest thing - I was describing my experiences hanging around with him and the words tumbled out very easily. I remember playing it to Isobel (Campbell, ex Belle & Sebastian) on the piano when I first wrote it and she thought it was ridiculous. She said it sounded like Chas & Dave."
...
"Lyrically, it’s maybe the most personal song on the album," says Aidan Moffat, "About a period when I wasn’t doing very well, both mentally and physically. I was walking with a cane and in pain most of the time, and drowning my sorrows too, trapped at home and watching the phases of the moon through a window."

KEXP's music director Chris Sanley has this review of the latest Mannequin Pussy album: Urgent, raw, honest and intimate, the fourth album from the Philadelphia outfit finds them digging deeper both lyrically and musically than ever before. Ranging from absolute punk rippers ("I Got Heaven") to dreamy shoegaze ("I Don’t Know You"), I Got Heaven is an exhilarating listen from an exceptional rock band who refuses to be put in a box. www.kexp.org

Ride will be at The Showbox on Saturday, May 25th! They are also playing in Portland at McMenamin's Mission Theatre on Thursday, May 23rd. -- Andy Bell said about "Last Frontier": “This was the runt of the litter of the very first jam session from Mark’s OX4 Studio and I didn’t even include it on my shortlist of the best tracks. It was our producer Richie Kennedy who saw the potential of the song, and we attacked this with a vengeance at Vada studio. A complete revamp of the backing track and arrangement was needed and we took it right back to basics, more towards a pounding Joy Division feel.”
