1992's Ferment was Catherine Wheel's debut studio album. "Centered around re-recorded versions of four songs from the band's two Wilde Club singles and the seven minute lovelorn Black Metallic' - which was referred to as the 'Like a Hurricane' of the ‘90s - the deeply rich Ferment firmly established Catherine Wheel amongst the shoegaze contingent of the early ‘90s." tinyurl.com

Revolver were a London-based guitar band active 1990 to 1994. Bandmates Mat Flint and Nick Dewey had been in school bands together, and when the two moved to London in the autumn of 1990, they met bassist Hamish Brown who completed the line-up. In 1993, the band released the album Cold Water Flat, following their debut Baby's Angry. Unfortunately, previous sales failed to repeat from their first album, and their label dropped them. The band recorded an album's worth of demos, but failing to sign a deal with another label split up at the beginning of 1994.

Adorable formed in September 1990 in Coventry, England. Prior to that, the band was known as The Candy Thieves, and their only record included an early version of "Homeboy" and another song "Underwater" that fitted the then-current baggy trend. The single was released on Trolley Records in 1990. However guitarist Wayne Peters left the band out of frustration with their lack of success and was replaced by Robert Dillam, prompting the name change to Adorable. Adorable's first gig was in Coventry at the Tic Toc club on the night that the first Gulf War started in January 1991. tinyurl.com In 2016, Pitchfork ranked 'Against Perfection' at number 42 on its list of "The 50 Best Shoegaze Albums of All Time". bit.ly As we approach 30 years since the release of Against Perfection, here's an interview with the band's Pete Fijalkowski, looking back on the album at the 20 year mark: tinyurl.com

Woke to the brilliance of shoegaze morning on KEXP! I'd like to make a request if you have time to fit it in: Majesty Crush - "No. 1 Fan." They are a really good 90s band from Detroit that I somehow missed until a few years ago. They are getting a little bit of press now due to a Numero Group reissue, and this week Pitchfork gave it an 8.0 (for what it's worth). Cheers, Chris Oakland

Ride will be at The Showbox on Saturday, May 25th! They are also playing in Portland at McMenamin's Mission Theatre on Thursday, May 23rd. -- Andy Bell said about "Last Frontier": “This was the runt of the litter of the very first jam session from Mark’s OX4 Studio and I didn’t even include it on my shortlist of the best tracks. It was our producer Richie Kennedy who saw the potential of the song, and we attacked this with a vengeance at Vada studio. A complete revamp of the backing track and arrangement was needed and we took it right back to basics, more towards a pounding Joy Division feel.”

M83 will be playing in Seattle at Showbox SoDo on Wednesday, May 10th and Thursday, May 11th! “I wanted this record to be very impactful live,” Anthony Gonzalez said in some press material. “The idea was to come back with something closer to the energy of Before The Dawn Heals Us. The combination of guitars and synths is always in my music, but it’s maybe more present on this new record than on the previous ones… I wanted to be more present lyrically and vocally even if that was daunting at first. “I thought if I could achieve that, this album will be more personal than those that came before.” www.stereogum.com
