This song was written while English electronic musician George Fitzgerald traveled around Germany and France last summer. “I was thinking back to the continental house records that I loved so much in the 00's, and the hours spent in record shops in Paris and Berlin discovering them,” FitzGerald said about the song. “This is my take on those memories.”

This song marks Justice's first new music in almost eight years. -- Justice said, “We wanted this track to sound as if a dark/techno iteration of Justice had found a sample of a disco iteration of Kevin Parker. Kevin has a sense of melody that’s fascinating in the sense that he manages to write melodies that feel both simple and natural, but very peculiar at the same time. ": www.spin.com

Ezra Koenig:" I really like 'Cousins'… We have so many different fans and different people like different songs and some people gravitate towards the quiet songs, some people towards the loud songs – this is obviously a huge generalization – but the two times I can think about when some rappers came over to me and said they liked Vampire Weekend were A$AP Rocky and Post Malone and they both specifically said they liked 'Cousins'… Might be like a generational thing maybe, that they missed the first album. That song is very reflective to me of stuff that I liked when I was twelve or thirteen. I loved Ska and surf music and kind of like high energy stuff so that’s a pretty special song."

Hey John, Love the show this morning so far. Everytime I peel an orange for my daughter Amelia, I end up singing "She Likes her hair to be real orange, she uses Tangerines" from "She Don't Use Jelly" by the Flaming Lips. I've had that song in my head all morning and would love it if you played it. Thanks! --Gulshan (“Ghoul-shun”) in Brooklyn -- Wayne Coyne said about this track: "When we recorded 'She Don't Use Jelly' we knew we were making something special. Whatever the absurdness of it, you could understand that I'm talking about toast and Vaseline, and it had some kind of innocent little sexual thing that ran through the whole song. That was kind of cool for us because up until then all of our songs were so asexual. I think we felt that there was this sort of the Guns N' Roses mentality to rock 'n' roll, and we were something different. We really had a lot of area to explore that didn't include a bunch of naked women- but here we felt like, 'Oh, what the f--k, let's go for it.'"

The Stones were stalled on recording this song in 1966. Then, after listening to the last playback, bassist Bill Wyman had an unusual idea. “I suggested Hammond organ pedals,” the bassist said. “I lay on the floor under the organ and played a second bass riff on the pedals, with my fists, at double-time.” The effect immediately fattened the song’s bottom end, as Wyman had intended, but more importantly, it suddenly eschewed its perceived direction. By inadvertently stirring in evocative, Turkish flavors, Wyman had sent the song careering into territory far more exotic than the Stones had hitherto adventured. “That’s it!” thought an exhilarated producer {Andrew Loog] Oldham. “I’d heard the sound and movement we needed, the whimsy that spelt ‘radio.’”

Seattle singer/songwriter Jen Wood has entered a collaboration (Gemz) with Sebastopol, CA-via-Seattle electronic musician Ted Chen. The song originated as one of Jen’s voice memos in 2017, and it turned into this final form in 2022 when Ted got involved. “When I listened to Jen’s voice memo of ‘Younger’ for the first time [in 2017], I could practically hear its final production,” he says. “The lyrics and melody inspired such a vivid image and energy in my mind. I wanted to evoke a space that felt like an infinite loop, with sounds and textures appearing in and out from the edges – like, what would happen if you were listening to this song while time traveling.”

Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatchee) said, " “I’m really interested in writing love songs that are gritty and unromantic. I wanted to make a song about the ebb and flow of a longtime love story. I thought it might feel untraditional, but a little more in alignment with my experience to write about feeling insecure or foiled in some way internally, but always finding your way back to a newness or an intimacy with the same person.” -- This song was recently selected as a free KEXP Song of the Day: www.kexp.org -- That's MJ Lenderman (of the band Wednesday) on vocals and electric guitar, Phil Cook on banjo, and Spencer Tweedy on percussion.

Would love to request PJ Harvey to wish Happy Bday to my friend Anita in DC. She introduced me to KEXP 20 years ago, which has been a gift to both of us. --Nancy -- Happy birthday, Anita!! -- In an oral history of Harvey’s album Rid of Me, she said, “When I was at art college, all I wanted to do was shock with my artwork. When I wrote ‘Rid of Me,’ I shocked myself. I thought, ‘Well, if I’m shocked, other people might be shocked.’ The sound of the words was powerful, and the rhythm felt clean and simple to roll off the tongue. I knew that this was the type of song I was trying to write.” -- Oh, my, here's a live version in Chicago in 1993: www.youtube.com

Sleater-Kinney will be playing The Showbox on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 2nd and 3rd. -- The video features Australian freediver Amber Bourke, who holds her breath in a bathtub for the duration of the introspective song. The band says, “For the video, we wanted imagery that spoke to the themes which permeate 'Little Rope': uncertainty, restlessness, urgency, all of the in-between and discomfiting states with which we’re forced to reckon. So, we came up with the idea of a woman holding her breath in a bathtub for the duration of the song, unsure of her motivations, not knowing whether she’s seeking escape, disappearance, absolution, or simply a moment of quiet and reprieve. We love the tension created by an act that defies both custom and comfort.”: www.youtube.com

Joe Talbot on this song: This was a real struggle. [Producer Mark] Bowen was really obsessed about doing interesting counts with the beats. I just wanted to make people dance and create infectious beats. We were coming from very different angles, but we loved this song that Bowen had made. I was like, I get it, Bowen. This is insane. I love it, but I can’t get it' We hung on to it for ages, and then [producer] Nigel [Godrich] really helped us out, he created spaces and bits here and there by turning things down and moving everything slightly. Then [producer]Kenny [Beats] helped me out, and got rid of the stupid counts, I think, and helped me write it on a 4/4 beat. And then they changed it back. I just come in in weird places. Everyone chipped in, because everyone believed in the song. -- The new IDLES album, "TANGK," is out today!
