Kindt: "It is no secret that I am a big admirer of the Pixies. I discovered them way back in 1989 when a school friend slipped me a cassette of Doolittle. I was 14 and up to that point my musical world had been almost entirely classical. I was blown away. Their use of contrasting dynamics, unorthodox song structures and multilayered melodies were a revelation to me and have heavily influenced me as a musician ever since. During last year’s lockdown I found comfort in the piano and decided to revisit and rearrange some of my favorite Pixies tracks. This resulted in the release of Pixies Reimagined in August 2020." -- You can go here to purchase that "Pixies Reimagined" release: www.amazon.com

Did you know that this was supposedly written by Bono in response to the notion that it’s possible to identify a person’s religion and income based on the street where they lived? -- He said: "On reflection I suppose I want to write about that 'other country,' the country of the imagination. I want to run out of hiding, to tear down the walls that hold me inside myself. I want to touch the flame." -- Don't miss the Grammy-winning video: www.youtube.com

Originally released on the 1995 album Everything Is Wrong, this composition then found a home in Michael Mann’s lauded L.A. crime drama Heat. Playing over the climax of the film, as Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino have their final confrontation, this juxtaposition of delicate arpeggios, soaring strings, and bombastic percussion has become one of Moby’s most enduring and beloved compositions.

It still rankles with Noel Gallagher today that the random inspirations behind "Champagne Supernova" aren't appreciated more by music critics. He complained to The Sunday Times in 2009: "This writer, he was going on about the lyrics to 'Champagne Supernova.' "He actually said to me, 'You know, the one thing that's stopping it being a classic is the ridiculous lyrics'. And I went, 'What do you mean by that?' He said, 'Well, Slowly walking down the hall, faster than a cannonball — what's that mean?'" Noel replied: "I don't know. But are you telling me, when you've got 60,000 people singing it, they don't know what it means? It means something different to every one of them."

According to singer Guy Harvey, the title of this sixth album from the Manchester band is said, "to do with the fact that there have been [so many] life events. There are five members of the band—people have split up, got together, had children. It never stops, this stuff. Especially round the 40 mark... and yet I wanted to remain celebratory about that. Everybody's feeling relief, with remorse, next to joy, next to loss. But I think laughing very hard and worrying very little is a good way to keep young."

A recent Song of the Day, as selected by our very own Kevin Cole! Katie Crutchfield — best known as Waxahatchee — enlists the talents of MJ Lenderman (of the band Wednesday, as well as a solo artist) for an unconventional love song. Crutchfield reveals, "I wrote [this track] backstage at Wolf Trap when I was on tour opening for Jason Isbell and Sheryl Crow. I’m really interested in writing love songs that are gritty and unromantic. I wanted to make a song about the ebb and flow of a longtime love story. I thought it might feel untraditional, but a little more in alignment with my experience to write about feeling insecure or foiled in some way internally, but always finding your way back to a newness or an intimacy with the same person." “Love is Stronger than Death” is one of the most moving songs ever penned by The The’s Matt Johnson and also included the guitar and harmonica of Johnny Marr. Marr spoke of his time recording Dusk with The The when he said, “Dusk … is one of the few records I’ve made that I can detach from and just enjoy as a listener. I don’t listen to anything after I’ve made it. As soon as it goes out I’m almost pathologically working on the next one in my mind, wherever it’s going to come from. But Dusk I continued to listen to for quite a long time afterwards. think Dusk is one of the best records I’ve been involved in.” Matt Johnson of The The wrote this song following the death of his brother. In his depression, he found that writing this song was therapeutic for him.

Long acclaimed as one of the most innovative and spellbinding bands on the contemporary British pop scene, the Verve finally broke through to a mass international audience in 1997 with the instant classic "Bittersweet Symphony." By no stretch a study in overnight success, the group's rise was instead the culmination of a long, arduous journey that began at the dawn of the decade and went on to encompass a major breakup, multiple lawsuits, and an extensive diet of narcotics. Perfecting an oceanic sound that fused the exploratory vision of '60s-era psychedelia with the shimmering atmospherics of the shoegaze aesthetic, the Verve languished in relative obscurity while waiting for the rest of the music world to play catch-up, creating one of the most complex and rewarding bodies of work in modern rock & roll long before most listeners even learned of the group's existence -- only to again fall apart at the peak of their success.
