Frank Black co-wrote "Gigantic" with Pixies bass player Kim Deal. In an interview from October 1997, Black discussed the song’s provenance: “A good chord progression, very Lou Reed influenced. I’d had the word ‘Gigantic’ in my mind just because the chord progression seemed very big to me.” The song also made a big impression on Kurt Cobain. Cobain said in 1992, "I wish Kim was allowed to write more songs for the Pixies, because 'Gigantic' is the best Pixies song and Kim wrote it." faroutmagazine.co.uk

Happy 2024 John and crew! Heading into work- if possible could you play tugboat by Galaxie 500. Thanks for being awesome and playing awesome music! Liam Gallagher and the Stone Roses guitarist John Squire have shared this single, marking the Manchester musicians’ first collaboration. More new music is said to be on the way this year. "I think John’s a top songwriter," shares Gallagher. "Everyone always bangs on about him as a guitarist, but he’s a top songwriter too, man, no two ways about it as far as I’m concerned. There’s not enough of his music out there, whether it’s with the Roses or himself. It’s good to see him back writing songs and f**king good ones. The melodies are mega and then the guitars are a given. But I think even when you take all the f**king guitars off, you can play the songs all on acoustic and they’ll all still blow your mind." tinyurl.com

When Heart of Glass was initially released, it was buried near the end of side B on Parallel Lines. "When we did 'Heart Of Glass,' it wasn’t too cool in our social set to play disco. But we did it because we wanted to be uncool. It was based around a Roland Rhythm Machine and the backing took over 10 hours to get down," Debbie Harry once said. Debbie Harry and Chris Stein wrote an early version of "Heart of Glass", called "Once I Had a Love", in 1974–75. This original version was inspired by The Hues Corporation's hit disco song "Rock the Boat" (1974).

Frontman James Smith said about “We Make Hits”: “We Make Hits” started like most Yard Act songs do these days, in Ryan’s spare bedroom. He’d recorded a couple of basslines and I went round to throw some words on top just to see what might happen. I was reflecting on how things had changed so much for us over the last few years when I realised that sat round a laptop trying to make each other laugh, necking black coffee and craning our heads out of the window to smoke cigs every hour or so, all that had really changed within the writing process was that, thanks to my baby, we were at Ryan’s house rather than mine and that Ryan had a place of his own now, which was nice. Despite the outside blowing up, behind closed doors, we were the same, and I’m grateful for that. You can see the cynicism and the silliness on the surface of “We Make Hits” without much effort, but at its core, for me, it’s really an ode to friendship and the unfiltered joy you feel when you’re making music with the people you hold dear in your life." www.stereogum.com

According to band member Tyler Spencer, the idea for the song came up from incorrectly hearing the lyrics of DEVO's "Girl U Want" as "it's just a girl, it's just a girl at a gay bar" while the song was playing in a very loud nightclub. Lead Singer Andrew Wood passed away a few days before the release of Mother Love Bone's album Apple in 1990. Apple peaked at number 34 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart in 1992. Rolling Stone said that the album "succeeds where countless other hard-rock albums have failed, capturing the essence of what made (Led Zeppelin) – dynamics, kids! – and giving it a unique Nineties spin."
