Purple Rain in the forecast. Good morning! A fun fact: Prince played all of the instruments on the track—a lead guitar, piano, synthesizers, and a Linn LM-1 drum machine. A bass part is notably absent from the song, though he told Bass Player magazine, he hated to see it go. “Sometimes your brain kind of splits in two—your ego tells you one thing, and the rest of you says something else. You have to go with what you know is right.” americansongwriter.com

James Murphy recorded Sound of Silver at the Long View Farm in Massachusetts, where he had previously recorded LCD Soundsystem's debut album. Sound of Silver was dedicated to the Bulgarian-born doctor, Dr. George Kamen (1942–2006), who pioneered group therapy and had opened a practice in New York City. The loss of 'someone' in the track "Someone Great" is thought to be about Dr. Kamen.

Slint's second and final studio album, Spiderland, released in 1991. Initially overlooked, the album would go on to be considered significantly influential on post-rock, math rock, experimental and indie rock in later years. “Even after all this time, those screams gives me the chills,” guitarist Dave Pajo told The Guardian in reference to vocalist Brian McMahan's exorcistic screams on the track. “If Brian hadn’t made himself vulnerable on that record we wouldn’t be talking about it now. It would have just been an interesting album of instrumentals, but he wore his heart on his sleeve.” Brian McMahan said he had an “out of body experience” during the recording, and ran to the bathroom afterward, with the explanation “I got sick.” Read more about Slint's Good Morning, Captain: www.treblezine.com

Here is Widowspeak Live on KEXP: www.youtube.com “At the beginning of something (a relationship, a project, a job, a new place) you have this very pure feeling toward it,” said Widowspeak in reference to Everything Is Simple. “Everything feels less complicated because you’re oriented wholly toward that potential. It’s undefined, and that makes it easier to understand, because you can’t see the problems yet. As time goes on, you learn more, you experience more, and you see where the limitations exist: not even necessarily ones imposed upon you, but where you draw your own lines. Maybe you can’t see what was holding you back until it’s in the past, and by then others’ perspectives contradict your own.” bit.ly widowspeak.bandcamp.com

I wanted to shout out a member of the KEXP Donor Relations team (sorry, i forgot her name!), I recently reached out bc I must've lost my 2021 'I Power KEXP" annual sticker, as you can see the gap on our garage beer fridge. She was lovely and sent one out to us right away, to fill that empty thank you, everyone at KEXP is just the absolute bees knees. I also attached a pic of myself, feeling very Seattle with my kexp t-shirt, hoodie and coffee mug. Must be the gray clouds and forecast for drenching rain all day here in the Philly/NJ area. All that being said, I would love to hear Vapour Trail by Ride this morning, if it pleases the DJ and crew. with love- AJ, Jo & Aria, longtime amplifiers from NJ

Released in 1989, Disintegration became the band's highest charting album to that point, reaching number three in the United Kingdom and at number 12 in the United States. Hallucinogens and Robert Smith's fear of turning 30 were great influences on the creation of Disintegration. Smith felt all the masterpieces in rock and roll had been completed well before the band members reached 30. Smith consequently began to write music without the rest of the band. The material he had written instantly took a darker form, which he credited to his upcoming milestone birthday. The band convened at drummer Boris Williams's home and compared their individual demos that each member recorded, and they rated them "1 to 10", then the group met later at a second session and recorded a total of 32 songs at Williams's house with a 16-track recorder by the end of the summer. Of these 32 songs, 12 would make it onto the final album.

New music from Australian trio Middle Kids. According to vocalist Hannah Joy, “Highlands” pays tribute to her Scottish background. “Since I was young, I’ve had this yearning to be free,” she says. “I used an image of the ‘highlands’ as a euphoric place where I have the space to be me, and you have the space to be you. “Part of the imagery comes from my Scottish heritage, which my grandmother was always proud of. I recorded some big slow piano chords which Tim (Fitz) mangled into the atmospheric hits in the intro.” -- Watch Middle Kids performing live, recorded exclusively for KEXP in 2021 - www.youtube.com

Waxahatchee (Katie Crutchfield) has announced a new album, Tigers Blood, to be released on March 22 via ANTI- Records. The first single is called “Right Back To It,” a duet with MJ Lenderman and Katie says she “... really interested in writing love songs that are gritty and unromantic. I wanted to make a song about the ebb and flow of a longtime love story... a little more in alignment with my experience to write about feeling insecure or foiled in some way internally, but always finding your way back to a newness or an intimacy with the same person.” No Seattle dates yet, so likely playing one of the big fests.

Velvet Underground cover. This song was originally written by Lou Reed, who was often quoted as saying that the Cowboy Junkies' version was his favorite. Cowboy Junkies are a Canadian alt-country band formed by three siblings from the Timmins entertainment family (Margo Timmins, vocals; Michael Timmins, songwriter & guitars; Peter Timmins, drums) plus Alan Anton on bass. The group formed in Toronto in 1986. www.cowboyjunkies.com

Ian Sweet is the project of Jilian Medford. Speaking to Stereogum about the new song, Medford shared: “Emergency Contact” is biting and sarcastic at its core. It’s a protection song to myself mostly. Trying to convince myself that I didn’t really want what I had lost in the first place as a way of coping with the outcome. The video we made for it is one of my favorite Ian Sweet videos ever (especially since it ties in with the “Your Spit” video as well). I wanted to represent the humor that often goes hand in hand with deep sadness. In the video Martin (who plays the director) keeps quickly snapping me out of those deep dark moments and pushing my buttons to try to get a rise out of me so in turn I’ll put on the best performance possible. www.stereogum.com www.iansweetmusic.com

Dream, Ivory, are brothers Christian and Louie Baello, from Southern California. This new song, written in collaboration with Melina Duterte of Jay Som, is called "Milk." "The first time I heard Dream, Ivory was last summer when they dropped Soaking Up The Sickness, I was hooked," shares Duterte. "It's the perfect opener for a record. They're an insanely talented duo so I was really stoked when they asked me to sing and do additional production on this song. It's one of my favorite collaborations I've been a part of and I'm even more proud to work with fellow Filipino artists. <3" https://www.dreamivory.com/ http://www.jaysommusic.com/

From Toadies first studio album, released in 1994. Vocalist and guitarist Todd Lewis offered an explanation behind the guy in the song rummaging through the fridge for beer: "There's a moment sometimes when you're writing where you're like, 'I don't have any idea what this line is going to be. I've got these lines before it and these after it and I have no line to go in this one spot. I'm thirsty, so he's going to get a beer now, that's what he's going to do.'"

Florida hardcore foursome Gouge Away (founded in 2012) are back as well with their long-awaited third album, Deep Sage coming out on Deathwish Records. Note, they are a band, called Gouge Away. Gouge. Away. They recorded the album live and said in a press release that they had "...no choice but to feed off each other’s energy. We have to get it right in one take and if anyone messes up we all have to start over, so no one wants to be that guy. It adds an element of risk and excitement. We don’t want to sound beautifully polished or perfect anyway. We want to sound like the five of us being human."

This song refers to the biblical story of Samson. Drummer David Lovering revealed, "It's the perfect example of a true Pixies song. It's got the quiet verse and then it goes all-out for the chorus. The way it's structured, it's two opposing layers. I remember when we recorded it, I thought it was the most compelling thing we ever did." bit.ly www.pixiesmusic.com

"Electricity" was the first song that Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys wrote together at the age of 16. It addresses society's wasteful usage of energy resources. Inspired by Kraftwerk's "Radioactivity", the track was described by McCluskey as "a faster, punkier version of 'Radioactivity' with a chorus."
