Eddie Vedder said that this song was changed by the audience's reaction to it. “Folks are jumping up in the aisles, using their bodies to express themselves and singing along ‘I’m still alive’ en masse. So every night when I look out at this sea of people reacting on their own positive interpretation, it was really incredible. “The audience changed the meaning of these words and when they sing ‘I’m still alive’, it’s like they’re celebrating. And here’s the thing. When they changed the meaning of those words, they lifted the curse.”" faroutmagazine.co.uk -- Here's the official video: www.youtube.com

Like so many of the songs on Temple of The Dog, ‘Hunger Strike’ tells the story of Andrew Wood, who died of a heroin overdose in March 1990. Following the overdose, he was kept on life support for three days, giving Cornell and his bandmates time to say their goodbyes. -- Watch Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell perform "Hunger Strike": www.youtube.com

This is an environmental song written by guitarist Kim Thayil (music) and lead singer Chris Cornell (lyrics). It's about the abuse of mother nature (blanketing the ocean with oil, the clear cutting of old growth forests). Then the lyrics go on to say, "Put your hands away, your gonna kill your mother," meaning the Earth. --- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQOOgQtLI4M www.kexp.org/donate

Joey Calvan (b. October 31, 1967) appeared on Sesame Street as one of the kids in a series of sketches, primarily with Kermit the Frog. One of her most notable appearances on the show was in a sketch where she sang the alphabet with Kermit. As the song progresses, she kept replacing certain letters with "Cookie Monster." The sketch has been used in a number of specials and clip shows as one of Sesame Street’s most memorable moments. In Episode 0462, taped on October 31, 1972, after Maria plays a game with Joey, she asks, "Did you tell me it was your birthday today?" Joey tells her that she turns five today and that it feels "just fine."

"What a Wonderful World" is a song written by Bob Thiele (as "George Douglas") and George David Weiss. The original plan in 1967 was for the gravel-voiced, quirky jazz legend Armstrong to release the song as a piece that might quell some of the racial and political unrest in America, given its optimism and celebration of life. But, because of lack of promotion, the record didn’t go anywhere in the U.S., though other countries embraced it. In 1988 though, thanks to its inclusion in the Robin Williams movie Good Morning, Vietnam, “What a Wonderful World” finally claimed a spot on the U.S. top 40 charts. Armstrong, sadly, was long dead by this time. Here's the story behind this song: americansongwriter.com

"The song describes a time in everybody’s life that make you lose faith in yourself, in someone else, or in life itself and you just need to hear from someone that one day everything will be OK again. That no matter what, with time and patience we all will be OK.” www.kexp.org --- Lea Porcelain shared a Live on KEXP at Home performance with John in 2019, where they ended the set with "I Am OK." -bit.ly

George Michael performed the song with Queen's remaining members at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in April 1992. -- "The performance most well known in my career," Michael said in the documentary Freedom, "was sung to my lover who was dying." Anselmo Feleppa had just been diagnosed with AIDS, but Michael wasn’t publicly out – so his relationship with Feleppa was a secret. That left Michael to take the stage while enduring a very personal pain, even as he honored another of the disease's victims. “I went out there knowing I had to honor Freddie Mercury and I had to pray for Anselmo,” Michael said in the film, which was produced before he passed away in 2016. “I just wanted to die inside. I was so overwhelmed by singing the songs of this man I had worshiped as a child, who had passed away in the same manner my first living partner was going to experience.” : ultimateclassicrock.com

This stands as one of the finest examples of the "Minneapolis sound," blending in finger-cymbals, a string section, and a harmonica as a strategy to create a well-rounded groove. This style is sometimes called "The Prince Sound," but there were a lot of other folks making it as well, many of them working with Prince at some point.

This was the last song written for the album. They had already used an extra week of studio time and needed one more song in a hurry, so Bono opened a bible, read from Psalm 40 of Psalms of David, and they put it to music. The last song on War, it invokes the first track, "Sunday Bloody Sunday," with the refrain "How long must we sing this song." - bit.ly --- The song is noted for its live performances; guitarist the Edge and bassist Adam Clayton trade instruments during performances of it, and as it was commonly played to end their concerts, the band would leave the stage one-by-one as the audience continued to sing the refrain "How long to sing this song?".
