More on U2 releasing their album Rattle and Hum on this day 35 years ago (1988): The album was also released with a companion rockumentary film directed by Phil Joanou. The title, Rattle and Hum, is taken from a lyric from "Bullet the Blue Sky", the fourth track on The Joshua Tree. The image used for the album cover and movie poster, depicting Bono shining a spotlight on Edge as he plays, was inspired by a scene in the live performance of "Bullet the Blue Sky" recorded in the film and album, but was recreated in a stills studio and photographed by Anton Corbijn.

So... who else saw Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service in Seattle last weekend? The bands are both celebrating 20 years of their albums Transatlanticism and Give Up. Transatlanticism, released in 2003, is a concept album exploring a theme of long-distance romance. Transatlanticism was mainly recorded at the Hall of Justice, a studio in Seattle's Fremont neighborhood.

"Long known as Dylan’s Royal Albert Hall Concert due to bootleg mislabeling, the 1966 concert actually took place at the Manchester Free Trade Hall. Infamously, an audience member screamed “Judas” at Dylan during the electric portion of the set. Over five decades later, somebody apparently recreated the moment at Cat Power’s show, and, instead of instructing the band to “play it f*ckin’ loud,” Chan Marshall [Cat Power] responded by mentioning Jesus." pitchfork.com

Another night of not sleeping. Devastated by what’s happening in Israel and the world. Devastated by the silence of friends and allies. Devastated by the horror of what’s happened and what has yet to unfold. Hoping you can play Leonard Cohen’s Who by Fire, a prayer and a sober reminder of the suffering in this world. Thanks for being committed to music being eyes in a moon of blindness, a harbor in the tempest. It’s like watching the towers fall in slow motion. Ashley ==== Who by fire, one of Leonard Cohen’s most loved songs, was inspired by the medieval liturgical Jewish poem Unetanneh Tokef, known from the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur prayers.

Skinny Pelembe and Beth Orton's cover of Leonard Cohen’s 1974 track “Who by Fire." == "Who by Fire" explicitly relates to Cohen's Jewish roots, echoing the words of the Unetanneh Tokef prayer and sung as a duet with Janis Ian (also Jewish; her birth name is Janis Eddy Fink). The song was written after Cohen's improvised concerts for Israeli soldiers in Sinai during the Yom Kippur War.

Continuing to celebrate U2's Rattle and Hum, released on this day in 1988! "Bullet the Blue Sky" was the fourth track from their 1987 album The Joshua Tree and lyrically, the song was inspired by a trip that lead vocalist Bono made to Nicaragua and El Salvador, where he saw firsthand how locals were affected by United States military intervention in the region. "Bullet the Blue Sky" is one of the band's most overtly political songs, with live performances often being heavily critical of political conflicts and violence.

Good morning from Portugal. My husband and I came to Portugal to finally see The National abroad. It was an epic show last week (the Portuguese are superfans like us!). We are now beachside and while we are enamored with this beautiful country and friendly people, we are saddened by what’s happening in Israel. Having family there, makes our enjoyment feel bittersweet. Please play Fake Empire for us. -Dara (like Sara 😇) and Jeff

"Into Your Arms" is a cover version of a song written and recorded previously by Love Potions, bandmate Nic Dalton's former band, and it became the Lemonheads' biggest charting hit. "Into Your Arms" first came out in 1989, originally by Australian duo Love Positions, consisting of Robyn St. Clare (who wrote the song) and Nic Dalton. Good morning, John! I wanted to make an unusual request ... my very dear friend Darren and I are leaving a road trip today from Seattle to New Mexico (planning to arrive in time to watch the solar eclipse on Saturday!). We've both had an incredibly hard year and this feels truly like the first thing we have to look forward to. We're both fellow music nerds and long time KEXP listeners and we've been compiling a playlist of songs about the sun, moon, eclipse, stars, sky, space, etc. Can you play us a song of your choice that's on that theme?! Thank you so much! & I hope your dog, Suzie, gets well soon :) peace & love from Sally in Seattle
