John,
I lost my mom Diane yesterday after she had a long battle with various ailments. This last year was filled with multiple visits to the ER and hospital stays.
We were told she had weeks to 3 months once we brought her home. Her first few days home were good. She needed a lot of help, but was happy. Soon it changed.
My parents were married for 54 years and I guess being their kid I took their love and bond for granted. These last weeks really opened my eyes to the level of love and commitment they had for each other.
Growing up we always had music playing. My mom took me to my first concert (oak ridge boys) when I was 4. Bought me license to ill on cassette when I was probably to young for it and would stay up late and watch headbanger's ball with me.
She loved the Beatles and I have a vivid memory in the mid 90's of going to silver platters at Northgate so she can get the Beatles anthology. I think she had those songs playing in her car for 10 years.
She was a great mom and grandma. I am so glad that my kids got to spend at least a few years with her.
Could you play "here comes the sun" and "someone great" if you have time.

Good morning, John! Today is my sister Elaine's birthday - she accidentally introduced me to REM when she left Automatic for the People behind when she went off to college. THIS IS NOT AN EXIT’s title is a reflection of something Jess Corazza realized during a period of personal and familial crises. “I kept walking into buildings and I’d try to exit somewhere and the sign would be like, ‘This is not an exit,’” she says. “It just felt like a metaphor for a hopeful thing—don't give up yet.” - illpeach.bandcamp.com

I can't believe James's Laid came out 30 years ago today. I did a huge feature on them for UCLA, which is the self-indulgent crap you get to do when you're the music editor. They were my first "little" band, which sounds silly because they played arenas in the UK, but in the US they were unknown and never really made it big here. I'd been in London when they made it big there the summer of 1990. It was the days of printed zines and camaraderie among shy teenage strangers who shared a passion but had no internet to find kindred spirits. Tim Booth would flail around onstage like a possessed shaman, a flood light behind him illuminating flying pearls of sweat. The shows always ended with the tiny audience crawling onstage for an extended rendition of Sit Down. Booth would sit on the speaker, hold out the mic toward us, and smile. I'd go home with a drenched tee shirt that smelled like the 8 people I was pressed against for 2 hours. Good times.
This orchestral version of 'Sometimes' is part of the double album released earlier this year in celebration of James's 40th Anniversary! The album is a collection of some of James’ most loved and rare tracks, reimagined with a 22 piece orchestra and eight piece choir. - wearejames.com
