Good morning and welcome to the Morning Show! Frontman Adam Granduciel on this song: "“In Reverse” is one song that’s surprises me I wrote it. It’s one of those things that came about from mixing and arranging. At the last minute I started changing the song around. Now it’s a unified piece I can’t believe I effing put this together. I really can’t. It’s awesome. It gives me hope for my future musical endeavors. It was a last minute visualization of the song in terms of the arrangement, so to perform it now as if that’s how I wrote is pretty funny, but amazing too."

Skinny Pelembe and Beth Orton have shared a cover of Leonard Cohen’s 1974 track “Who by Fire.” Orton says, “I have always felt connected to the work of Leonard Cohen. I toured “I’m Your Man” with an amazing cast of people, and every night I was intrigued by the mystery of “Who By Fire.” I was never totally satisfied that I understood the song. When Doya [Skinny Pelembe] sent me his version I was immediately taken by the Serge Gainsbourg quality of the drums and the overall feel, and I loved the cheek and punk-like spirit of this version, and seeing as I was in a studio in Paris, I didn’t give a second thought to throwing myself into Doya’s re-interpretation. Climbing inside the words this way brought the meaning of the song into new focus, the passion and heart-breaking inevitability of human nature that Leonard Cohen writes of like no other came alive to me finally.”

The bass riff that plays throughout this song is based on a riff lead singer Thom Yorke came up with at age 16. -- Jazz composer Charles Mingus was a big influence on this. The Morning Show has voted that this is the best song right now. The Bug Club are a three piece from the little-known rock n' roll hotbed that is Caldicot, Monmouthshire, Wales. They've been gigging relentlessly for a few years now (until recently, obviously), mainly in Cardiff and Bristol. Their upcoming double album, "Rare Birds: Hour of Song," is out Oct. 18! tinyurl.com

Good morning. My Dad and I have had a very on and off relationship. In the past couple of years we have been building up a new relationship with movies and dinners and ice cream dates. It's been really good to "finally have a Dad." He is in the hospital right now and I am having big feelings. Last night I was looking through his phone for a number and kept seeing “Lil.” I’m like - who’s Lil? He says - that’s you. I connected the dots quickly and said “oh - her name was McGill, she called herself Lil, but everyone knew her as Nancy.” To which he nodded and chatted about the White Album. This bit of sweetness has been pulling at my heart since. I feel actually loved by my Dad - a feeling I never thought I’d have. If you could play Rocky Raccoon by The Beatles for us this morning it would be so appreciated. Thanks for all you do. You are not alone.

Released on this day in 1979! "Dreaming" is the opening track from their fourth album, "Eat to the Beat". Blondie guitarist Chris Stein wrote the music for this song and came up with the line "dreaming is free." Stein said this song was "pretty much a cop" of "Dancing Queen" by ABBA. -- "Blondie’s songs tend to be so much fun that’s it’s easy to overlook their depth and the craft behind them. Don’t make that mistake with “Dreaming,” or you might miss the hurting yet ultimately hopeful heart beating inside that pristine pop shell." Enjoy this tribute to the songwriting of "Dreaming": americansongwriter.com

Featuring Tanya Donelly from Throwing Muses, Breeders, and Belly on vocals. "How was it singing with Tanya Donnelly on "Judy Staring at the Sun?" Rob Dickinson and Brian Futter of Catherine Wheel were asked in an interview. "It was fun. We actually did our parts separately, I did my bits in England and then me and Gil flew to fort Apache in Boston and Tanya did all her parts in about six hours. Then we took it back to England and pulled it apart and put it back together. It was kind of a disjointed way of doing it but it worked out very well." bit.ly

"Wake up, kids We got the dreamers disease..." -- “You Get What You Give” became the signature song of the New Radicals, released as the lead single from their only album Maybe You’ve Been Brainwashed Too. The song received critical acclaim, with Rolling Stone calling it one of the greatest One Hit Wonder songs and later calling it one of the best songs of the 90s. In an interview, U2 lead guitarist the Edge is quoted saying "You Get What You Give" is the song he is "most jealous of. I really would love to have written that."

That entire bass line is supplied by Bootsy Collins of Parliament-Funkadelic fame; he also provides backing vocals. Q-Tip is the rapper on this song. -- The song samples the main riff from Herbie Hancock's track "Bring Down the Birds" from the Blowup soundtrack and Vernon Burch's "Get Up", which provided the drum track and also formed the basis for the breakdown featuring a slide whistle.

Released on this day in 1987. Have a great rest of your Thursday! -- John Lydon had this to say about the song when asked in an interview with The Stranger in 2015: “We had a week off in the tour for some reason, due to gig rearrangements and/or whatever, and I flew back to LA, but the band hung out in Seattle and they started jamming about and rehearsing and started putting together a really catchy tune. So I flew up, and the words just flowed out instantly. It’s a great song. The subject is about rioting, really, and when you see them World Trade Organization riots, it’s kind of appropriate. It’s an homage to Seattle, a town that’s never done us any harm. A town we feel quite warm about… great atmosphere, the gigs are always amazing. It feels like home to me.” -- See if you can identify any Seattle images in the official video: www.youtube.com (Didn't think so.)
