Portishead’s Beth Gibbons sings lead vocals on a new song with Afghanistan’s the Miraculous Love Kids, “Atmosphere/Heroes,” which blends the Joy Division and David Bowie songs. The release marks two years since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan, severely limiting women’s rights and freedoms. The young women in Miraculous Love Kids subsequently fled Kabul, Afghanistan, for Islamibad, Pakistan, with their families, forming the band alongside American musician and activist Lanny Cordola.

When they couldn’t sing together due to the Covid 19 quarantine, the Silverlake Conservatory of Music choir decided that wouldn’t stop them from creating music. Each student recorded their part in a rendition of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” on a phone and the school stitched them together in a special video showing how even while apart, they can still sing together.

The album was originally released by the band's frontman Matt Johnson as a solo album, but later reissues credited it to The The. After a bidding war between major record labels,, Johnson began recording the album in New York City, but the initial recording sessions were disregarding after the album's first two singles and Johnson returned to London where he wrote and recorded the rest of the record.
