Moby sampled this song by Deep Forest in the song "Flying Foxes." -- Deep Forest were formed in 1992 by French electronic musicians Eric Mouquet and Michel Sanchez. Inspired by the music and culture he observed on a trip to Africa, Sanchez delved into recordings he'd acquired on his trip, and he and Mouquet began sampling the native sounds for use with their atmospheric dance tracks. Deep Forest's sound has been described as an "ethno-introspective ambient world music". They were nominated for a Grammy Award in 1994 for Best World Music Album, and in 1995 they won the Award for the album "Boheme."

“Porcelain” was the sixth single off Moby’s commercial breakthrough Play. The song was based on particularly painful breakup. Moby recalled: "I was involved with this really, really wonderful woman, and I loved her very much. But I knew deep in my heart of hearts that we had no business being romantically involved. So, it’s sort of about being in love with someone but knowing you shouldn’t be with them."

Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker recently explained the nexus of this song: “For me, it’s about getting out of toxic internal patterns — leaving the empire of energy drains that obscure pure essence, learning about what healthy boundaries are, and finding the power to implement them for the possibility of giving and receiving (both inwardly and outwardly) unbroken and infinite Love.” Here's the lyric video: radiomilwaukee.org

Cheryl Waters hosted Lucinda Williams Live on KEXP from Home in August 2020: youtu.be The Village Voice's Robert Chrisgau called this one of the best 10 albums of the 1990s -- 'Williams's cris de coeur and evocations of rural rootlessness—about juke joints, macho guitarists, alcoholic poets, loved ones locked away in prison, loved ones locked away even more irreparably in the past—are always engaging in themselves. And they mean even more as a whole, demonstrating not that old ways are best, although that meaningless idea may well appeal to her, but that they're very much with us.' -- tinyurl.com

Ok at this point I'm beginning to wonder if anything wasn't sampled in "Groove is in the Heart." -- Funny note about the man who wrote this song...his name was Vic Mizzy whose best-known works are the themes to the 1960s television sitcoms Green Acres and The Addams Family. Mizzy also wrote top-20 songs from the 1930s to 1940s. One of his compositions, "In the Middle, In the Middle, In the Middle", an early 1960s anti-jaywalking public service announcement for New York City, was sung by Mizzy's daughter Patty Keeler. The song was later covered by They Might Be Giants.
