Former Lush guitarist/vocalist Emma Anderson has announced her debut solo album, Pearlies, which will be out October 20 via Sonic Cathedral. The album was written by Anderson and produced by Maps‘ James Chapman, with guitar contributions from Suede‘s Richard Oakes.
Seeds of this album date back to Lush’s reunion which came to an end sooner than some expected. “I thought we were in it for the long term, so some of these songs – or even just parts of them – were actually going to be for Lush,” says Anderson. “That didn’t happen, so I had these songs and bits of music that I didn’t know what to do with.” She thought about starting a new band with someone else as vocalist but was urged by onetime Cocteau Twins guitarist Robin Guthrie, who produced some of Lush’s recordings, to sing her own songs.

On this day in 1969 the Apollo 11 mission, piloted by Neil Armstrong, with Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, completed the first manned landing on the moon. Armstrong landed the "Eagle" lunar module at 20:17:40 UTC on Sunday, July 20 1969, with roughly 50 seconds of fuel remaining.

On this day, Bob Dylan releases "Like A Rolling Stone." Recorded June 15th and 16th of that year, during a difficult two-day preproduction, Dylan struggled to find the essence of the song. A breakthrough was made when it was tried in a rock music format, and rookie session musician Al Kooper improvised the Hammond B2 organ riff for which the track is known. Kooper, at that time a 21-year-old session guitarist, was not originally supposed to play but was present in the studio as a guest of producer Tom Wilson. When the session keyboard player stepped out, Kooper sat down at the organ. Wilson belittled Kooper's organ skills, but did not forbid him to play. As Kooper later put it, "He just sort of scoffed at me ... He didn't say 'no'—so I went out there." When Dylan heard a playback of the song, he insisted that the organ be turned up in the mix, despite Wilson's protestations that Kooper was "not an organ player." Columbia Records was unhappy with both the song's length at over six minutes and its heavy electric sound, and was hesitant to release it. It was only when, a month later, a copy was leaked to a new popular music club and heard by influential DJs that the song was put out as a single. Although radio stations were reluctant to play such a long track, "Like a Rolling Stone" reached No. 2 in the US and became a worldwide hit.
Seattle’s Brad (featuring birthday boy Stone Gossard) have released a new song and music video for “Hey Now What’s the Problem?” off their upcoming LP, In the Moment That You’re Born.
The full album, In The Moment That You’re Born, will include 10 recordings featuring vocal performances from Smith, who recorded the songs before his tragic passing in 2019. The album will also feature a newer version of “Stars N’ You,” written by the late Andrew Wood from grunge bands Malfunkshun and Mother Love Bone.

A few years back I watched the last few breaths leave my dying father. He died of cancer at the young age of 57. Yesterday I watched the very first breath of my son as he arrived into this world and I’m completely overwhelmed with joy.
