It is the companion to a similar singles compilation by their subsequent band New Order, also titled Substance. The cover features the title of the album in green spelled with characters from Dutch type designer and typographer Wim Crouwel's New Alphabet typeface.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs released their return album Cool It Down in 2022, making the debut with lead single "Spitting Off the Edge of the World", featuring Perfume Genius. A year later, they've shared this new "lush" edition of the song, along with the following statement via Twitter:
“There haven’t been many duets in the history of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, maybe we were waiting for a unicorn like Mike to come around,” wrote the band. “Having a chance to try a different rendition of Spitting Off the Edge of the World with Mike was always on the wishlist. Our producer wanted to bring the track into Lee Hazlewood territory as far as lush arrangements were concerned, there is some influence but in the end it’s very much a stand alone sum of its parts, the gem of another collab between Dave Sitek, @perfumegenius , and YYYs. American singer-songwriter and record producer Suzanne Vega was born on this day in 1959!
Vega came to prominence in the mid-1980s, releasing four singles that entered the Top 40 charts in the UK for the following decades including "Luka", "Marlene on the Wall", "Left of Center", and "No Cheap Thrill".
'Til Tuesday are best known for their 1985 hit single "Voices Carry", the debut single from their debut album of the same name. Til Tuesday is from Boston, fronted by Aimee Mann, who later emerged as a formidable solo artist.

From PJ Harvey's tenth studio album of the same name, released earlier this month on July 7th. It is her first album in seven years, recorded with longtime collaborators John Parish and Flood.
The album apparently took many years to make and was inspired by her epic poem "Orlam". Harvey described the meaning of the record as "searching, looking—the intensity of first love, and seeking meaning".

This cover of the 1988 hit song from When in Rome that appears on Simpson's second album 'Metamodern Sounds in Country Music,' his second studio album.

When In Rome started out as a British new wave trio consisting of vocalists Clive Farrington and Andrew Mann, and keyboardist Michael Floreale. Farrington and Mann had been members of a locally popular band called Beau Leisure when they decided to strike out on their own. This song was from their debut LP in 1988 and became both an instant hit and the song they're best known for.

"Northern Town" started life with a different title. Laird-Clowes told Mojo that he had befriended Paul Simon at one point and the two stayed in touch. He recalled: "I played him the song and he asked, 'What are you going to call it - 'Ah Hey Ma Ma Ma?' I told him that we intended to name it 'Morning Lasted All Day.' 'That's no good,' he said and so I came up with 'Life In A Northern Town.' which he thought was a great title."
Lightning Seeds was formed by English singer Ian Broudie (formerly of the bands Big in Japan, Care, and Original Mirrors). "Pure" was the band's first single release, and the first song Ian Broudie had written and sang entirely on his own.
Broudie was originally apprehensive about the release: "I didn’t think that many people would be interested if I’m going to be honest, I suppose I didn’t have the confidence really and I wasn’t in a band but I did want to put my music out and get it heard."

We’ve been traveling in Europe for the last three weeks and returned to Seattle last night. We ended the trip by seeing Blur at Wembley on Sunday night. Singing along with 90,000 fans was surreal and moving. My husband Shawn and I went with a friend named Neil who I met at a gig in London 28 years ago. "That was a really old song of Stone's (Gossard) from his days in Mother Love Bone. It was just another chance for me to do a lot of leads. The song was kind of cool at the time because it reminded me of performing. For me, it was about playing live."

I wasn't ready. You need the flood to be over, and then you can decide whether you can accept the flood. I think with this being a record about acceptance, you need to actually get there yourself."
