This was written by Heatwave's keyboardist Rod Temperton; it was the first song he ever wrote on his own. The song got the attention of producer Quincy Jones, who brought Temperton in to write songs for Michael Jackson. It was a very fruitful collaboration, as Temperton wrote three of Jackson's biggest hits: "Off The Wall," "Rock With You" and "Thriller."

After getting hit with a great deal of negative publicity back home in London, The Sex Pistols felt like they had been trapped in a prison camp environment, so they decamped to the Channel Island of Jersey. The group was so notorious, they couldn't find a place to stay. Steve Jones and Paul Cook returned to England, but John Lydon and Sid Vicious continued on to Berlin, where they spent two weeks. The lyric was inspired by this trip, including their views over the Berlin Wall into communist East Berlin.

"Yes, there was a Virginia. Billy Joel based his 1977 song 'Only The Good Die Young' on an actual high school crush named Virginia Callahan. After Joel wrote the song about this Catholic girl’s reluctance to enjoy some lustful moments instead of praying all the time, he asked his drummer for his input. 'I showed the song to Liberty (Devitto), who’s Catholic,' Joel recalls in the liner notes to a 2008 rerelease of The Stranger. 'He said, ‘Well, it’s true.’” americansongwriter.com

X Ray Spex's Poly Styrene was the first woman of color to front a successful rock band in the UK. "She introduced the world to a new sound of rebellion, using her unconventional voice to sing about identity, consumerism, postmodernism, and everything she saw unfolding in late 1970s Britain, with a rare prescience. As the frontwoman of X-Ray Spex, the Anglo-Somali punk musician was also a key inspiration for the riot grrrl and Afropunk movements. 1977 - Chic's first single and first hit in the US. Nile Rodgers said: "Bernard [Edwards] came to my apartment one day and he had laid out the complete lyric, but we wanted to add a catch phrase, so we went through a few ideas like "23 skidoo" and "Oh, you kid" and all that stuff. We had in mind something like the old dance marathons, where the emcees made the people dance, and finally we thought of how Gig Young kept saying "Yowsah, yowsah, yowsah" in 'They Shoot Horses, Don't They?'"

This song was written by Cheap Trick's guitarist Rick Nielsen and recorded for their 1977 self-titled debut album, but it didn't make the cut. The song was included on their second album, In Color, which was released later in 1977. By 1978, the band had dropped it from their setlist, but restored it when they toured Japan that year, since Japanese audiences loved the song. A live version of "I Want You to Want Me" from the album Cheap Trick at Budokan was released in 1979 and became their biggest selling single. - bit.ly

This was released as a single in 1977. After Duke Ellington died in 1974, Wonder wanted to write a song acknowledging musicians he felt were important. He later said, "I knew the title from the beginning but wanted it to be about the musicians who did something for me. So soon they are forgotten. I wanted to show my appreciation." Wonder pays tribute to "some of music's pioneers" in the song: "There's [Count] Basie, [Glenn]Miller, Satchmo [Louie Armstrong], and the king of all, Sir Duke / And with a voice like Ella's [Fitzgerald] ringing out / There's no way the band can lose".

"‘The Modern World’ was released as an A-side and backed by ‘Sweet Soul Music’ and ‘Back In My Arms Again’, both recorded live at London’s 100 Club on September 11th, 1977. Though the track made only a minor impact on the charts (it reached number 36) and was widely dismissed by critics, it captured something essential about the mood of 1977, even if The Jam were forced to replace Weller’s vehement “I don’t give two Fs” with the infinitely softer I don’t give a damn.” faroutmagazine.co.uk

John! Loving this 1977 mix. Will you Take a Chance on some ABBA? "Take a Chance on Me" was released in January 1977. "Take A Chance On Me” was originally titled “Billy Boy”, and came from Ulvaeus who would sing a “tck-a-ch” rhythm to himself while he would go running. Eventually, this rhythm turned into the lyrics “take a chance”. storyofsong.com

“Psycho Killer” was released on the Talking Heads’ 1977 debut, Talking Heads: 77...the reason the song was about a psycho killer is because David [Byrne] said that he got the inspiration for it from an Alice Cooper song. Alice Cooper was very big at that particular point in time with an album called Billion Dollar Babies. The band’s whole thing was about horror. So Alice Cooper was like the springboard for ‘Psycho Killer’.” americansongwriter.com

"Supertramps' fifth album, Even in the Quietest Moments, in 1977, left an indelible mark in listeners’ ears, due in large part to Hodgson’s uplifting, magical hit single, “Give a Little Bit.” Roger Hodgson, co-founder of Supertramp, "explains, 'I’ve always known that love is what I long for, what I want, what I believe we’re here to learn, ultimately.' "Of all the garage bands that made a glorious racket in the 1960s, few if any were louder, wilder, or more raw than the Sonics, a Tacoma, Washington quintet whose over the top style, complete with roaring guitars, pounding drums, and the fevered howls of lead singer Gerry Roslie, anticipated the mania of punk and pushed rock & roll deep into the red zone during their 1963-1966 heyday.
