14th Dalai Lama's 88th birthday today The song was driven primarily by Beastie Boy Adam Yauch (MCA). As a practicing Buddhist, he had taken the Bodhisattva vow, which is a promise to liberate all sentient beings from suffering by practicing the six perfections of giving, moral discipline, patience, effort, concentration, and wisdom. Yauch began his serious study of Buddhism after attending a Dalai Lama lecture in spring 1993, in the midst of recording the Check Your Head album. "The general concept behind the song," Yauch said, "was to take the meaning of Shantideva's text, at least on the level that I understood it, and compress it into a modernized, three-verse rhyming song." www.songfacts.com

Track released in 2006 on this day. Guitarist Kyp Malone said: "I wrote it specifically to be a gender-neutral, sex-positive love song so anyone can apply it any aspect of life. Sex is the spice of life, you know. It's how we all got here. A lot of songs that are sex positive are very predatory - it's within the binary of gender politics. That's boring to me. It's not reflective of the world we live in." --- Here's a live version in Indianapolis in 2007: www.youtube.com

Track from album "Wolf Like Me" which released this day in 2006. Lead single from TV on the Radio's major-label debut New York band TV On The Radio exists like vapor: It's constantly shifting shape, occasionally cohering into something solid, then vaporizing again. That makes it difficult to describe the band's music or quantify what exactly it does, but the mutability affords limitless possibilities. If nothing else [the 2006 album] revels in the musical possibilities that accompany such stylistic freedom." bit.ly
