Good morning, Thursday Morning Show listeners! In the liner notes to 1975's The Best of Leonard Cohen, which includes the song, he mentions that the famous blue raincoat to which he refers actually belonged to him, and not someone else, saying "I had a good raincoat then, a Burberry I got in London in 1959. Elizabeth thought I looked like a spider in it. That was probably why she wouldn't go to Greece with me. It hung more heroically when I took out the lining, and achieved glory when the frayed sleeves were repaired with a little leather. Things were clear. I knew how to dress in those days. It was stolen from Marianne's loft in New York City sometime during the early seventies. I wasn't wearing it very much toward the end."

Anohni described the inspiration for this song: "A friend of mine expressed to me in the final months of his life that the simplest sensations had begun to feel almost rapturous; a carer had placed a shard of ice on his tongue one day and it was such a sweet and unbelievable feeling that it caused him to weep with gratitude. He was a hardcore kind of guy and these moments were transforming the way he was seeing things. I wrote “Sliver of Ice,” remembering those words of his." -- anohni.bandcamp.com

Thom Yorke said in 2003 that the chorus of this song, "You can try the best you can. You can try the best you can. The best you can is good enough", came from the words of encouragement given to him by his then partner, Rachel Owen, as Yorke was concerned the album wouldn't be a success.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch described the song as a "fuzzed-out barrage of guitars [that] suggest[s] a mixture of the pummeling sound of Dinosaur Jr. and the more dreamy soundscapes of Irish or British bands like My Bloody Valentine or Lush." -- Mmm, that's pretty good.

Liz Phair's debut album "Exile in Guyville" was meant as a song by song reply to the Stones "Exile on Main St". Phair said "For me, Guyville is a concept that combines the smalltown mentality of a 500-person Knawbone, KY.-type town with the Wicker Park indie music scene in Chicago, plus the isolation of every place I've lived in, from Cincinnati to Winnetka"

"A new Mylie Cyrus track played on the radio that afternoon, she too, was singing about houses burning down, and I took that as confirmation. Thank you so much for your Morning Show! My mom passed away in January after a 15 month battle with cancer, and her Celebration of Life is this Saturday. Phyllis was an independent-minded woman who stood up for what she believed in and who was independent in thought. She hitch-hiked from Chicago to California in the '60s, living a true hippy lifestyle. She traveled solo through Europe. And, eventually she raised a son, on her own. When she was diagnosed with cancer, she kept the details of the diagnosis to herself and would drive herself to many of her chemo treatments. She loved Van Morrison, but also many, many other artists. She loved the Stones, and also more contemporary bands. She took me to my first Pearl Jam show at the Chicago Stadium; we saw the Foo Fighters together at Wrigley; and went to so many other great shows. Anyway, you play so much great music, and everyday I discover new songs and artists to check out by listening to you, so play what you will. But, if you have time and feel so inclined, I would love a Van Morrison song. She was a lovely woman and is missed dearly by all who knew her. I'm at work listening to your show, trying to write my speech for Saturday, and trying not to ball my eyes out. Thank you... Ian

Released with b-side "The Man Who Sold the World" on this day in 1973. Bowie came up with this after he was asked to put English lyrics to a French song called "Comme d'habitude." Paul Anka ultimately bought the rights to the original French song and rewrote it in English as "My Way," later made famous by Frank Sinatra. "Life On Mars?" uses practically the same chords as "My Way" and the "Hunky Dory" liner notes state that the song is "inspired by Frankie."
