John's turn! Yeah Yeah Yeah's debut album Fever to Tell was born on April 29, 2003. The band wanted to finance their debut album themselves and chose to record at the low-budget Headgear Studio in Brooklyn. "It was really important for us to do it on our turf, on our terms", lead singer Karen O later told Spin. "We were all living together, and all the money we used to fund it came out of our pocket."

JOHN Tom Tom Club is the side project of Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth, the drummer and bass player of the Talking Heads. They married in 1977 and released the first Tom Tom Club album in 1981. Tina's sisters Laura and Lani were backup singers; Tina called their sound "naughty Catholic schoolgirl." -- Chris Frantz: In the studio I'd play the drum part. It's played by hand, but it's a loop part. It doesn't have any fills or anything, but it does have some tom-toms, so I would record a groove with bass drums, snare, and hi-hat. Then Tina would put down her bass. Then I would add a little tom-tom here and there. And then we added the keyboard part, which was actually two keyboard parts combined. Then Tina worked out the vocals with her two sisters, Laura and Lani, and a little bit of screaming by myself. Then we added Adrian Belew on guitar.

JOHN "Hey John, In 2019 I got laid off from my job at the amphitheater here in Austin due to COVID. I started making candles during lockdown and now I'm going back to that same venue as a patron tonight with my wife and was tasked with making the dressing room candles for Modest Mouse, my favorite band. Could you please play Workin' on Leavin' the Livin' to get us in the mood for tonight? Thanks! Brent from Austin"

MORGAN The liner notes to 'Blue Lines' mention the movie Taxi Driver as an influence, and it's clear that the movie was inspiration for this song's lyrics. The movie stars Robert DeNiro as a paranoid Vietnam vet who drives a taxi at night. He becomes obsessed with saving a child prostitute played by Jodie Foster, and ends up killing some people in his efforts. The spooky atmosphere in this song goes with the theme, as do the lines about protecting a child. bit.ly "Safe from Harm" (Perfecto Mix) is featured at the end of the Michael Mann-directed movie 'The Insider.' bit.ly

JOHN The album was heavily influenced by the music of Miles Davis, with whom Cobham had previously collaborated extensively, and Cobham's previous band Mahavishnu Orchestra. The recording process took place at Electric Lady Studios. According to Leland Sklar it was done in just two or three days and almost every track that ended up on a record was "first or second take at the most." Ken Scott, engineer of Spectrum, recounted: "Bill Cobham's drums were treated in exactly the same way as I recorded every other drummer. I just used more mics: Neumann U67s on toms, D20s or RE20s (at Electric Lady) on the bass drums, Neumann KM54 or 56 on snare, and either STC 4038s or Beyer M160 ribbon mics for the overheads. One other thing: in order to dampen the snare, Bill just laid his wallet on the top head." Leland Sklar, bassist on four of the songs, remarked, "Spectrum is such a benchmark for so many people. There was a sort of fire in it. It was new ground and it wasn't very analytical. It was more flying by the seat of your pants. That's where great accidents happen, which seems impossible these days. We never did more than a couple of takes on any of it. It was more or less a two-day record. It went by so fast." bit.ly

MORGAN Nancy, Frank Sinatra's daughter, is best known for this song, but is far from a one-hit-wonder. She charted 10 times on the US Top 40 from 1966-1968, with six solo hits, three duets with Lee Hazlewood and one with her dad - the #1 "Somethin' Stupid." bit.ly

MORGAN *air saxophone* Named after Baker Street in London, this song was on his first album release after the resolution of legal problems surrounding the break-up of his old band, Stealers Wheel, in 1975. In the intervening three years, Rafferty had been unable to release any material because of disputes about the band's remaining contractual recording obligations. Rafferty wrote the song when he regularly travelled between his family home in Paisley and London, where he often stayed at a friend's flat in Baker Street. "Everybody was suing each other, so I spent a lot of time on the overnight train from Glasgow to London for meetings with lawyers. I knew a guy who lived in a little flat off Baker Street. We'd sit and chat or play guitar there through the night." bit.ly Named after Baker Street in London, this song was on his first album release after the resolution of legal problems surrounding the break-up of his old band, Stealers Wheel, in 1975. MORGAN Radiohead recorded a brass section inspired by the "organised chaos" of Town Hall Concert by the jazz musician Charles Mingus. JOHN "Dancing on My Own" starts with one of the most visceral, propelling four-to-the-floor beats of the past few decades. The tempo is perfectly situated right around 118 beats per minute, pretty close to what scientists say is the preferred walking tempo for humans. The one-five-four chord progression is immediately familiar, like it's been around since the beginning of time. Everything about it is meant to make you smile and move and dance." --- "This is what's so confusing, so endearing and so lovable about this song. When I talk to people about it, they tell me how it always manages to make them feel less lost — eager to dance themselves toward the next day, or the next party, or the next lover. It's a song about loneliness, but the moment you hear it, you instantly feel less alone." Read this NPR tribute to this emotionally powerful song: www.npr.org

MORGAN Writing credit here is given to Attrell Cordes (Prince Be of P.M. Dawn) and Gary Kemp of Spandau Ballet, as the song is built around samples of their 1983 hit "True," as well as samples from The Soul Searchers' "Ashley's Roachclip." The main drumbeat also samples from Eric B. & Rakim's "Paid in Full".
...
JOHN The lyrics for this 1983song were inspired by a crush Spandau Ballet's Gary Kemp had on Altered Images singer Clare Grogan. "I was infatuated with Clare Grogan," he told The Guardian. "I met her on Top of the Pops and, at one point, traveled up to Scotland to have tea with her and her mum and dad. Although my feelings were unrequited and the relationship was platonic, it was enough to trigger a song." -- "True" was a huge worldwide hit, going to #1 in 21 countries. Released on Spandau Ballet's third album, it's their only big hit in America, but one of many in their native UK and other parts of Europe.

JOHN "Whenever I think of cowbell, the one track that immediately comes to mind is “Low Rider,” from War’s seventh studio album Why Can’t We Be Friends?, released in 1975. The funky Chicano hot-rod culture anthem is a classic banger and a classic cowbell song. Not only because of how prominent Thomas “Papa Dee” Allen’s cowbell is in its composition—from the very start of the intro and throughout the entire 3 minutes and 11 seconds of the original recording—but also because of how ingrained it has become in pop culture. From Cheech & Chong’s 1978 comedy Up In Smoke to Richard Linklater’s 1993 film Dazed and Confused; from Ubisoft’s 2006 video game Driver: Parallel Lives to The Simpsons’ 2011 episode “A Midsummer’s Nice Dreams”; the Low Rider may be a little slower, but continues to prove it is a real goer. Take a little trip and see." Enjoy this guide to "7 Top Cowbell Songs": www.musicto.com --

MORGAN Minneapolis wasn’t funky enough for Steven Greenberg. That was the problem. “I wanted to get out of here,” Greenberg said years later. “The scene was very bland… A very vanilla market.” He wanted to make a move to a town that was right for him. A town that would keep him moving, keep him grooving with some energy. So he wrote “Funkytown.” -- Learn the story behind this song (and see the video): www.stereogum.com
