"After a hard-fought battle with a horrible illness, my dad Tom passed away a week ago with my mom and me by his side and Music for Airports playing on his portable speaker. As the memories of him wash over me, I am struck by how many of them revolve around music. Growing up, Saturdays were for playing records all day - the Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, The Pointer Sisters, Grace Jones, Blondie, Talking Heads, Depeche Mode - I could go on for days. He took our family to see Adam Ant, Billy Idol, Prince's Purple Rain tour, Buddy Guy, and PJ Harvey. We used to stay up late to watch Friday Night Videos, and once we got MTV, it was always on. Live Aid was an epic event in our house, and he recorded all of it on VHS, along with so many episodes of Unplugged and Austin City Limits. He gave me an amazing soundtrack to my childhood and a deep appreciation for music and live performance. One of the best times he and I ever had was at a Bright Eyes show at Town Hall in NYC that I took him to when my husband couldn't go. He wasn't too familiar with the band, but he was so into it. By the end, they were doing a glorious, chaotic 20-minute version of Road to Joy with too many musicians onstage to count. My dad was dancing and laughing with glee - pure joy. Today would've been my dad's 75th birthday, and it's my mom's first time waking up by herself in their apartment. I'd love it if you could play "First Day of My Life" by Bright Eyes, in honor of my dad and for my mom, Pat, and please let her know: you are not alone. - Chanda"

Ben Gibbard spoke to NME about the meaning of this song: “Death is an ever-present fear. If not a fear, then an impending reality in our lives. We like to think that when people leave this life, we will see them again some day. Writing a love song that deals specifically with the inevitable death of one’s partner and that you will follow that person into whatever the afterlife is or is not, that’s something that people can relate to.” www.nme.com

Dear John (and Owen!)- Today is the final day at Seattle Children's for my wife (and fellow amplifier) Kathleen. It's been very emotional for her over the past few weeks. KEXP has been incredibly supportive, especially the Morning Show. Today we're celebrating her final (crappy) commute, so it would be awesome if between 8:00 - 8:20 if you could play Grounds - IDLES or Dance Yourself Clean - LCD Soundsystem. Please and thanks! Greg

For Dan. You are not alone! - "I woke up this morning to a meeting request from HR, sent out at 6:00AM, with a pretty generic title, for me, the head of HR, and my boss to meet at 7:30AM. This is ALWAYS good. So, when my wife and I got back from our morning walk, I put on my IDLES T-shirt, my KEXP hoodie, and my stompy boots, and got online for the meeting. As expected, I was let go in a round of layoffs at my company. Now, I've been in software for decades and had already seen the writing on the wall. I lost my entire team back in March and knew that some recent project impacts likely meant my position would be "made redundant" by the end of the summer. It came a little faster than expected, but I was about as ready for it as I could be. In the end: This sucks, but my wife and I know we'll be okay. I would love to hear Soup Dragons "I'm Free" if you could fit it in this morning. 'Cause music and laughter are a great antidote for (crummy) news. Thanks, Dan P.S. I'm dancing myself clean already. :) "

Wow! Read this!: LA-based singer/songwriter/guitarist NoSo says, "“I wrote this song when I was deep into learning intricate acoustic finger-style pieces and ended up composing the most difficult guitar part I’ve made yet. It’s about being treated kindly in a relationship for the first time after years of subjecting myself to mistreatment because it was all I knew, and frankly, it was what I thought I deserved. For many, many years, I genuinely believed something was wrong with me. I was disgusted by anyone who was caring and interested in me and I was only attracted to unkind people and hurtful behavior. I felt stiff, robotic, and incapable of loving. This song is ultimately a celebration. It’s about realizing I have the capacity to love, to feel accepted, and to not be repelled by safety, but to run toward it, and even when it feels like I’m regressing, I know I can do it again."
