RIP Andy Rourke, bassist The Smiths, 59.
On Twitter, Johnny Marr said: "Andy will be remembered as a kind and beautiful soul by those who knew him, and as a supremely gifted musician by music fans.”
Damon of Badly Drawn Boy tweeted “The Smiths were easily the most important band of my teens. I was beyond honoured when Andy played bass with me on tour for 2 years. He was the coolest, kindest funniest person, a joy to tour with. Probably the best natural musician I’ve ever seen. Loved him. Gutted.”
The late Andy Rourke played on a number of songs on Sinéad O'Connor's "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got'" including bass guitar on "The Emperor's New Clothes", "Jump in the River" and "You Cause As Much Sorrow", acoustic guitar on "Jump in the River".
In just the second line of the song, Morrissey makes clear that all the romance and nostalgia has been drained from his view of this hamlet: “Trudging slowly over wet sand/Back to the bench where your clothes were stolen.” “This is the coastal town/ That they forgot to shut down,” he warns. And his sly sense of humor sneaks into the tableau throughout: “Etch a postcard/ ’How I Dearly Wish I Was Not Here.’”: americansongwriter.com
Released on this day, uh, 37 years ago in 1989. Wow.

A few weeks ago I was listening to your show and someone wrote in with three things to live by:
Be kind
Be grateful
Listen to the music
Hearing that made an impact on me and it has been in my head ever since. I think beautifully, simply sums up how I want to be.
Thanks,
Hunter
Just.the.best. Keep running up that hill peeps.
Vocalist Dave Gahan explained that “Enjoy The Silence” began as a “very slow, ballad-y couple of verses” but bandmate Alan Wilder and producer Flood converted it into the danceable new wave hit it became. At first, songwriter Martin Gore was initially not on board with the uptempo rewrite.
"I thought the very nature of the song was, you know, enjoy the silence, so it ought to have a very serene atmosphere. It took me a while to get used to the idea, but as we took it further that way with the guitar riff, it really pulled together."
Greetings from Northern Europe - Tallinn, Estonia. For our timezone (CET-2) the KEXP Morning show marks the end of the workday and it has been amazing to cook and socialise having the upbeat fresh energy from your show.
Pertti, my boyfriend and the father of our son (3) has been listening and supporting KEXP for over a decade now and I would love to surprise him with something very special this year on his birthday.
Could you send happy birthday wishes to Pertti this Thursday (18th May) during the Morning show? I know that "I wanna be adored" by The Stone Roses is one of his good-mood-songs, so if you see it fit for the show, that would be amazing.
Happy if this gets any attention, you must be swamped with requests like this one.
Lots of love!
Monika
Playing the Crocodile tonight. You should go. Seriously. They are amazing live.

Hi John,
I was at the show last night. Between songs they said playing in Seattle feels like being home even though they are from faraway, and that they wouldn't be where they are right now if it weren't for KEXP.
The crowd went wild.
Made my heart melt in multiple directions.
Amy!
Happy Friday, y'all.
Happy baby Friday song, y'all.
I was messaging with Rachel just a few days before she passed. She had posted something about Prince and I mentioned how I'll always regret never seeing him live.
She said "nah - just make new memories" - which felt even more poignant once I learned she had passed. I took a screenshot of that message, printed it out, and taped it to my computer monitor.
Would you play some Prince?

Josh in Magnolia writes:
...(what KEXP has) built is so very important to me and how it impacts my daily life. My family listens to the amazing music but is impacted by the beautiful community that delivers it. Thanks for being you and for bringing the actual good vibrations that echo through my house and life.
And then Cathy showed up and we hung out
Trading swigs from a bottle all bitter and clean
Locking eyes, holding hands
Twin high maintenance machines

“I wanted this record to be very impactful live. The idea was to come back with something closer to the energy of ‘Before the Dawn Heals Us.’ The combination of guitars and synths is always in my music, but it’s maybe more present on this new record than on the previous ones.” - ilovem83.bandcamp.com
