"Elegia" was written in memory of Ian Curtis, lead singer of New Order's former incarnation, Joy Division. On this day in 1980, we lost this amazing artist at the age of 23. While the album version is ~5 minutes, it is a cut of a full 17 minute track... hear all 17 minutes here: youtu.be

Mike Nesteroff writes Thank you for playing the excerpt from the KOMO May 18, 1980 Mt. St. Helens broadcast. The anchor reading that was Bob Throndsen, who just passed away last February. I was one of the KOMO field reporters covering Mt. St. Helens that day. In fact, if you have the KOMO 5 pm clips, the video of the log jam on the (toot-uhl) Toutle River is from our crew and I as we flew upriver with the doors off the helicopter! A piece I did that ran later in the newscast was from the Toutle High School rescue center, and then on the 11 pm that night we had video of a fully intact house floating down the Toutle River and then disintegrating as it slammed into a bridge. We were the only crew to get that one (and our camera batteries ran out right after the house hit the bridge). It was quite a memorable day and week for me as a very new reporter.

Temple of the Dog is the only album by the American rock band Temple of the Dog, released on April 16, 1991. It is a tribute to Andrew Wood, the former lead singer of Malfunkshun and Mother Love Bone, who died on March 19, 1990, of a heroin overdose. Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, who had been Mother Love Bone vocalist Andrew Wood's roommate, approached former Mother Love Bone members Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament about working on material he had written when he was on tour with Soundgarden in Europe. The line-up eventually included Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron and newcomers Mike McCready (lead guitar) and Eddie Vedder (background vocals).

"It's about trying to step out of being patterned and closed off and reclusive, which I've always had a problem with. It's about attempting to be normal and just go out and be around other people and hang out. "The Day I Tried to Live" means more like the day I actually tried to open up myself and experience everything that's going on around me as opposed to blowing it all off and hiding in a cave."

This is an edit of the 12-minute version of "Bad", because during the performance, Bono jumped off the stage to embrace and dance with a fan, who later revealed that Bono actually saved her life at the time. She was being crushed by people pushing forwards; Bono saw this, and gestured frantically at the ushers to help her. They did not understand what he was saying, and so he jumped down to help her himself.

"The song describes a time in everybody’s life that make you lose faith in yourself, in someone else, or in life itself and you just need to hear from someone that one day everything will be OK again. That no matter what, with time and patience we all will be OK.” www.kexp.org --- Lea Porcelain shared a Live on KEXP at Home performance with John in 2019, where they ended the set with "I Am OK." -bit.ly

Sharon Van Etten said in an interview in 2012, "I wrote the song about a friend talking me through a panic attack...social anxiety is a really ridiculous kind of curse to have. But I met people along the way who deal with it — performers as well — and they are learning to deal with it daily and deal with it in different ways. "We Are Fine" is a duet with Beirut's Zach Condon, who has social anxiety, too."

Bob in Chicago: I woke up this morning with my dead son in my dreams. He will be 22 on Sunday. His name is Evan and he was smart, curious about everything, kind and a wonderful son. Everything I could want, but a longer life for him. I rarely dream of him, so it is both incredibly painful when it happens and incredibly gratifying to know we are still connected subconsciously. I turned on KEXP to hear a mini "death and music" show today. It has also been incredibly painful and just what I need.
