Matt Berninger says this song was the one that helped him break through writer’s block. “When I feel stuck, I’ll often grab a book off the shelf just to get some words in my head, and the first two pages of Frankenstein ended up triggering ‘Your Mind Is Not Your Friend,’” he said. “The book starts off with the narrator on a voyage near the Arctic Circle, and that image of being adrift helped me to write about feeling disconnected and lost and lacking in purpose. Once I started confronting that strange, blurry panic of not having ideas, everything began to crack open a bit.”

Bandmember Pete Fijalkowski said of "Homeboy": This was written pre-Adorable when we were called the Candy Thieves going to school at Warwick University. I can still remember the day we wrote it. Wil started playing the bass line, and Kevin joined in on the floor tom. I sang a whole load of lines culled from other discarded songs, Wayne picked some notes, and then when it felt right I stepped on my distortion pedal to make it start feeding back, Kevin sensed it was time to move onto the snare and we all crashed in – it was beautiful. www.creation-records.com

This was featured in the 1989 movie Say Anything in a scene where John Cusack plays this from a Boom Box he holds over his head to win the heart of Ione Skye. Cameron Crowe, who directed the film, was going to use Billy Idol's "Got To Be A Lover," but it didn't work with the scene. Crowe got the idea to use this when he played a tape from his wedding which had the song on it. Because it was a deeply personal song, Gabriel did not want to let him use it, but when Crowe called and sent him a tape of the movie, Gabriel loved it and gave his approval. bit.ly

Off her self-titled debut album, Sabrina Teitelbaum is Blondshell. On the release of her debut she had this to say: “It’s hard to summarize what this album means to me. I was able to work through so much by writing and singing these songs. In a way I was also able to find my voice by finally saying these things out loud. I wasn’t intending to write an album as much as I was just trying to get relief from an intense and difficult time in my life. My biggest hope is that people can see the album for what it is: there’s no happy ending or ‘message,’ it’s just a window into what it’s like when you’re trying to figure out who you are and what you want.”

We'll call you Mini-Friday song....which reminds me of this quote from Dr. Evil describing his childhood. "My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent, I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds- pretty standard, really."

My first cousin just passed away.. he's a huge Phish head. But he loved all music, introduced me to all the stuff my parents wouldn't.. We used to listen to KEXP together all the time. One of my fav memories was Burning Spear at bumbershoot. We played "Free" at his celebration of life. Rarely (never?) heard Phish on KEXP.. thanks for reminding me of Justin this morning. He passed from a glioblastoma (brain tumor/cancer).. he's free now.. love having this station in my life.. he loved it too. Thanks -Sean

During the band's Woodstock '94 Music Festival performance, Primus were pelted with mud while they performed the song. About a minute into "My Name Is Mud" the band stopped playing, and Primus frontman Les Claypool said, "Well I opened a big-ass can of worms with that one, didn't I? The song is called 'My Name Is Mud', but keep the mud to yourselves, you s.o.b.": www.youtube.com

"New York Groove" was written by an Englishman: Russ Ballard, a songwriter who until 1974 was the guitarist in Argent. He wrote the bones of the song on a plane while flying to New York City to work on a Roger Daltrey solo album.
