American hero Martin Luther King Jr. was murdered on this day 1968. What a senseless tragic loss 55-years ago.

Michael Stipe describes this song as about using people over and over. It's deceptive because it could be a LOVE song until the line, "A simple prop to occupy my time."
LOVE LOVE LOVE.

“I wanted to write a simple song, just four quick chords and a slow realisation. I think I somehow stole the lyrical idea from Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” – that a song might be trapped inside just one thought. And in that one thought there might be everything. That’s how good that Kylie song is anyway.”

"The Boys of Summer" is a song by Eagles vocalist and drummer Don Henley, with lyrics written by Henley and music composed by Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
--
Tom Petty was astounded by the track's success. One day, he and Campbell were out on a car drive to listen to a mix of their song "Don't Come Around Here No More", but turned on the ignition and heard "The Boys of Summer". Campbell changed the station in case the song would upset Petty, but another station was also playing the song. Petty enjoyed listening to it and regretted initially turning it down.
From Stereogum, "The veteran Ontario indie-folk musician Hayden will soon release his first album in eight years, and he’s announcing it with a lot of star power. April’s Are We Good features drums by Big Thief’s James Krivchenia and two songs produced by the National’s Aaron Dessner. Its lead single, out today, is a Feist collaboration called “On A Beach.” The song arrives with a video featuring not just Leslie Feist but also Dessner’s National bandmate Matt Berninger and Hollywood legend Steve Buscemi. The latter connection goes back more than a quarter-century: Hayden did the music for Buscemi’s 1996 directorial debut Trees Lounge.".

Recorded in Stiff Records' mobile studio, The China Shop, in the spring of 1979, Kirsty MacColl's original recording of "They Don't Know" "emphasized layered harmonies in which MacColl turns her own voice into a chorus of over-dubbed parts"[2] - an evocation of a long-standing admiration for the Beach Boys engendered at age 7 by hearing her brother's copy of the "Good Vibrations" single:
"I played it so much he just said: "have it"...I played it incessantly for about twelve hours a day, working out all the different parts and harmonies."
MacColl's version of "They Don't Know" would not make its album debut until 1995 on the singer's retrospective album Galore.
A certain awesome KEXP DJ hosted this live session featuring this amazing band doing this incredible song. His name rhymes with "Ron Jichards."

Our notes say this amazing album was released on this day in 1979, but we all know it was released in the year 3043 from a studio on Moon Base 4 in the Remular Sector.
Noble Rot is the side project of Alex Edkins from the group METZ and Graham Walsh of Holy F*ck.
They tell BirthdayCakeBreakfast... "One day Alex started laying down drum beats that we chopped up and I added modular synth noise and heavily manipulated samples to them...(i)n one or two days we had a whole pile of sounds to sift through, and a rough structure. In the spirit of “we don’t really know what this is” experimentation, and collaboration, I sent the song to our friends Colin Newman and Malka Spiegel from Immersion to see if they’d like to contribute. Understandably, it was probably a bit overwhelming to receive the whirlwind of sounds that they did, but they’re both amazing and contributed some extra guitar, synths and put a proper bass guitar on it.

To quote John on Slack, "but first, Dig."
--
After releasing a demo EP in 1992 titled Runt, Dig signed with Radioactive Records and issued their first full-length in 1993 (the self-titled Dig), produced by Dave Jerden, whom was well known for producing '90s albums by bands such as Alice in Chains and Anthrax. The album would peak at #153 on the Billboard 200 and at #6 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart.

Hey, did you know that singer Kurt Cobain's friend, Kathleen Hanna wrote "Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit" on his wall. Since they were having a deep conversation he thought it had a revolutionary meaning. What Kathleen was really referring to was a deodorant brand his girlfriend used."

"Exile in Guyville" was written by Phair as a song-by-song reply to the Rolling Stones' 1972 album, "Exile on Main St." and this song corresponds to "Tumbling Dice." Phair recalled in a 2010 interview: "I remember thinking the most important song happens at the fifth song. Because in my mind 'Tumbling Dice' is the big radio hit. I was like, I need to do the big radio hit there, which is funny because 'Never Said' ended up being the radio hit off that record for me."
Read a second-by-second analysis of this hit, which features the pitched up guest vocals from Kamaal Ibn John Fareed, AKA Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest fame.

The song was initially a hit in dance clubs but made a number of appearances in popular culture in later years....did my grandpa write this?
In 1990 Moby used a sample of it in his dance hit of the same title.
In 1997, it was featured in the film Grosse Pointe Blank and appeared on the second volume of the soundtrack. The song was also notably featured in the 2003 cult film Party Monster. bit.ly
