The Joshua Tree was released on this day (cough), um, 36 years ago.

The live video for this song, from a downtown L.A. rooftop, was inspired by the Beatles’ final rooftop performance from "Let It Be," at the time reportedly leading Bono to quip, "It's not the first time we’ve ripped off the Beatles."
"Where the Streets Have No Name" ultimately won the Grammy for Best Performance Music Video, beating out David Bowie's Glass Spider and Stevie Nicks: Live at Red Rocks, among others.: www.youtube.com
Robert Smith said that the songs "Mesmerise" by Chapterhouse, and "Human" by The Human League were an influence on the album, he commented on both songs in 1993: "For every album we do, I assemble a bunch of songs that have something that I'm trying to capture. One night I must have played 'Mesmerise' 20 times, drinking and turning it louder and louder, putting myself into a trance."

"'Hopeful' is a track that we had originally wanted on 'The Last Goodbye' and for a moment we even considered it for the first track on the record. While it ultimately didn't make the album we still felt an affinity for the song and wound up playing it in the live show," said Harrison & Clay of ODESZA.
"In a lot of ways it represents us doing our best to remain hopeful in a time of unsureness. We wanted the track to embody a sense of togetherness and to be a reminder that we are not alone even when we feel distant." bit.ly
The ambient track's video was directed by Nigerian-Austrian filmmaker David Uzochukwu. You can find it here:

Good morning, Morning Show Crew! TGIT, huh? I hope you and yours are well. If you can fit it into the mix, I'd like to request "Kill Rhythm" by Catherine Wheel. As always, please and thank you
The band says "In simplest terms, ‘Sole Obsession’ is one about knowing when, or if, to give in or give up. Particularly, when to untie the knots we tie ourselves into when an infatuation sets in. So many of us have experienced an addictive feeling that constricts us further and further until, hopefully, there’s a moment of clarity that allows one to free themself from that particular compulsion."

Sitting here (with a U2 branded) cup of coffee, and your first song is from my favorite band and album of all time and I thought...what the hell am I waiting for? If THAT isn't a sign, then I'm just ignoring signs. Your show has lifted me out of far too many dark holes to count in 20yrs. It has been there through ANYTHING life has thrown at me. It's given me ritual and comfort and hope and an infinite community that just keeps expanding and surprising and inspiring me more every day and I always wish I could give more, but this is now and the match gives it more power. Cheers to you. cheers to all of you.

Tom Findlay, songwriter & producer on "At the River": "When we started making music, we packed a sampler and a keyboard and rented a little old house in Ambleside in the Lake District to write an album in a week. On the last day there we picked up a Sounds of the 1950s compilation from a 50p bargain bin in the local shop. That’s where the vocal sample on At the River comes from – it’s Patti Page singing Old Cape Cod. We sampled her singing, “If you’re fond of sand dunes and salty air, quaint little villages here and there…”

“Woman is a Word” is a clanging, yearning censure of women’s objectification, one where Rodríguez passionately condemns those who write her off as a purely physical being. “I’m only a figure if you can see my frame/I’m only a struggle if I get in your way.” On Twitter, Rodriguez explained that she wrote the song “as a reaction to feeling like the word ‘woman’ put me in a box of things I was capable to do.”

This was a song that caught Bono torn between a life of domesticity and free-spirited artistry. "I had some difficult emotional stuff going on," he confessed to Mojo. "I didn't understand at that point the freedom that I would receive from a committed relationship. I was feeling guilty if I was talking to somebody in their record company who was really attractive. I was you know, just everything was at 11. But that's why 'With or Without You' is so operatic and that's OK."
On this day in 1990 at The Central Saloon in Seattle, Mother Love Bone play their last show, as their lead singer Andrew Wood dies of a heroin overdose 10 days later. Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard from the band form Pearl Jam later that year.
My name is Cristina and I'm from Winnipeg, Canada. It's my friend Brittany's 50th birthday today! She's a very loyal listener and I'd love it if you could play her favourite Radiohead song in honour of turning FIFTY; Fake Plastic Trees. We became best friends through our mutual love of Radiohead.
Thank you so much and keep on playing the great songs!

"It is no secret that I am a big admirer of the Pixies. I discovered them way back in 1989 when a school friend slipped me a cassette of Doolittle. I was 14 and up to that point my musical world had been almost entirely classical. I was blown away. Their use of contrasting dynamics, unorthodox song structures and multilayered melodies were a revelation to me and have heavily influenced me as a musician ever since. During last year’s lockdown I found comfort in the piano and decided to revisit and rearrange some of my favourite Pixies tracks. This resulted in the release of Pixies Reimagined in August 2020."

This song was written in response to the National Union of Mineworkers' 1984 strike in Great Britain.
"I was interested in the miners' strike politically, but I wanted to write about it on a more personal level," Bono told NME in 1987. "A cold statistic about a pit closure and redundancies that follow is drastic enough on one level, but it never tells the full human story."
Following the success of last year’s acclaimed EP Homeschool: Book II, as well as this year’s recurring role on Apple TV+’s new prestige drama Dear Edward, NYC-based actor and recording artist Homeschool (aka Tom D’Agustino) debuts “Bound To Be.”

Small Black returned with a new album in 2021, and in 2023 they’ve released a sort-of new album. Having revived an old hard drive full of music recorded around the time of their 2009 self-titled debut EP, the band retrieved a bunch of old material and expanded the EP into a full album.

In 1985 The Stone Roses were locked in a room by their record producer Martin Hannett and told they weren't allowed out until they wrote a song, and this is the one! This tune was the result of this curfew. The original version was shorter and faster and was included on the Stone Roses 1985 Garage Flower album - bit.ly

The last email Jeff sent us featured this poem: The ultimate touchstone of friendship is not improvement, neither of the other nor of the self, the ultimate touchstone is witness ... to have walked with them and to have believed in them, and sometimes just to have accompanied them for however brief a span, on a journey impossible to accomplish alone."
