Good Morning and welcome to the Monday edition of the Morning Show with John! Rest in Peace Television's Tom Verlaine, who died this weekend at 73 after a brief illness. From Pitchfork, Verlaine’s work with Television is punctuated by their landmark 1977 debut album Marquee Moon, regularly hailed as one of the best albums of the 1970s, Their intricate, airy compositions embodied the experimental wing of Manhattan’s fabled CBGB scene in the late ‘70s. He went on to release several solo vocal and instrumental albums as Tom Verlaine and as part of a duo interpreting silent films. pitchfork.com

M83 will be playing in Seattle at Showbox SoDo on Wednesday, May 10th and Thursday, May 11th! A new album is also on the way, titled Fantasy, and will be out on March 17th. “I wanted this record to be very impactful live,” Anthony Gonzalez said in some press material. “The idea was to come back with something closer to the energy of Before The Dawn Heals Us. The combination of guitars and synths is always in my music, but it’s maybe more present on this new record than on the previous ones… I wanted to be more present lyrically and vocally even if that was daunting at first. “I thought if I could achieve that, this album will be more personal than those that came before.” www.stereogum.com

Vocalist Dave Gahan explained that “Enjoy The Silence” began as a “very slow, ballad-y couple of verses” but bandmate Alan Wilder and producer Flood converted it into the danceable new wave hit it became. At first, songwriter Martin Gore was initially not on board with the uptempo rewrite. "I thought the very nature of the song was, you know, enjoy the silence, so it ought to have a very serene atmosphere. It took me a while to get used to the idea, but as we took it further that way with the guitar riff, it really pulled together."

Ball of Confusion was a song was originally performed by the classic soul group The Temptations and written by Rev. Barrett Strong. "Ball of Confusion (That's What the World Is Today)" is a 1970 hit single for The Temptations. It was released on the Gordy (Motown) label, and written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong. Bob Babbitt of the Motown house band The Funk Brothers recalled to Mojo magazine February 2009 the recording of this track: Putting it together was simple, we just did that one song in the three-hour session and we had enough time left over to eat some BLT sandwiches. We didn't know it was going to be political, because the lyrics weren't written when the rhythm track was recorded. Although a nearly eleven minute long backing track was recorded, only slightly more than four minutes was used for the Temptations' version of the song. The full backing track can be heard on the 1971 self titled debut album of the Motown group The Undisputed Truth.

RIP to Tom Verlaine, who passed away this weekend aged 73 after a short illness. The band chose acclaimed English engineer Andy Johns to produce the Marquee Moon on account of his work on such early-’70s classics as Mott The Hoople’s Brain Capers and Goat’s Head Soup by The Rolling Stones. However, according to an insightful and neck-deep interview conducted with Lloyd by Scottish author Damien Love for Uncut, a lifestyle clash with Johns and Television produced studio tension from the outset. "Andy is a real child of rock ’n’ roll," Lloyd tells Love. "He was used to being with people who are also rock ’n’ roll, and you can imagine whatever that means in the 1970s. He was used to people who didn’t mind taking it very slack in the studio. You know: you’ve got a 2 o’clock start, and the engineer shows up at 4.30, and the guitarist shows up at 5 and the singer rolls in at midnight. But Television were not like that. We were punctual. And serious." "He’d say things like, 'Is this a Velvet Underground trip? What kind of trip is this?'" Verlaine recalled told writer and renowned New York avant-garde musician Alan Licht for the liner notes to Rhino’s 2004 expanded edition of Marquee Moon. "And I’d say, 'I don’t know; it’s just two guitars, bass and drums. It’s like every band you’ve ever done.' "So he said, 'O.K., I’ll come back after Christmas.' So he came back and all of a sudden he totally loved the record. He said, 'Jesus, this is great.'" bit.ly
