The music video released for "Classic Girl" featured clips from the film Gift, directed by and starring band frontman Perry Farrell and his then-girlfriend and muse, Casey Niccoli. Casey Niccoli, aka the 'Classic girl', dated Perry Farrell from 1982 to 1993, and through those years witnessed first-hand the evolution of Jane's Addiction as both girlfriend and creative muse. "I was 18, and I really wanted to move," she recalled. "L.A. was so exciting to me. I had $250 to my name, packed up my car and moved to L.A. I felt like I belonged here. I got into the punk scene, and three or four years later I met Perry. My boyfriend's band played a benefit show with Psi Com (Farrell's former band). I just showed up, and I was immediately just mesmerized, fell in love." Nicolli and Farrell began dating a year later. www.bakersfield.com

"Behind The Sun" samples a song recorded by Simin Ghanem, an Iranian classical singer born in 1944. Of the song, ODESZA said “While digging through old records we came across a song by the legendary Iranian singer, Simin Ghanem. It was such a beautifully haunting vocal that we couldn’t really get it out of our heads. Slowly we started to build these symphonic elements around her and piece by piece it started to become this big anthemic track. We wanted to incorporate pieces of live drumming in a new way and ended up running various snare drum elements through a resonator and modulating them to each hit. Overall we really love how this song came together, bringing the past into the present is something we find really exciting and inspiring.” bit.ly odesza.bandcamp.com

My Ma Was Good was featured on Nakhane's EP: Leading Lines. The single, according to a press release, is part of a trilogy of songs inspired by the musician’s relationship with their mother. “Although she is no demure wallflower, she was still f*cked over by a problematic masculinity,” Nakhane explained. “Here I was asking myself the question: ‘If my ma was good and she still got a raw deal, then why should I be good? Why should I behave? This was at a point in my life when I was toying with the villain in me.” pitchfork.com Their new album Bastard Jardon will be out March of this year! nakhaneofficial.com

This track references John Cale's times in 1970s New York with David Bowie. "There was this period around mid-late ’70s when David and I would run into each other in NY. There was plenty of talk about getting some work done but of course we’d end up running the streets, sometimes until we couldn’t keep a thought in our heads, let alone actually get a song together! One night we managed to meet up for a benefit concert where I taught him a viola part so we could perform together. When I wrote “Night Crawling,” it was a reflective moment of particular times. That kind of NYC that held art in its grip, strong enough to keep it safe and dangerous enough to keep it interesting." - Cale pitchfork.com Music Video: www.youtube.com

Dear has listed Talking Heads, David Bowie, Adonis, Nitzer Ebb, and Roman Flügel as inspirations. When asked who he is influenced by Dear replied, "Definitely I'm influenced by Brian Eno and a lot of his work. I've said it before but he is one that is so interesting to listen to on all formats whether it be his production with other bands, whether it's his solo work or whether it's his collaboration work with other artists. He's probably the number one." matthewdear.bandcamp.com

M83 will be playing in Seattle at Showbox SoDo on Wednesday, May 10th and Thursday, May 11th! A new album is also on the way, titled Fantasy, and will be out on March 17th. “I wanted this record to be very impactful live,” Anthony Gonzalez said in some press material. “The idea was to come back with something closer to the energy of Before The Dawn Heals Us. The combination of guitars and synths is always in my music, but it’s maybe more present on this new record than on the previous ones… I wanted to be more present lyrically and vocally even if that was daunting at first. “I thought if I could achieve that, this album will be more personal than those that came before.” www.stereogum.com

Hey John, Good morning, thanks for being here today. I recently voted in the KEXP poll for 1989 as the best year in music. I am curious if you can play a song (or set) that you love from that year. Brian -- Robert Smith has given different stories about what inspired the song. One is that it was written after a fire at Smith’s house and he found pictures of his wife, Mary Poole in the wreckage – so the song was written in response to his nostalgia. Another story is that he once threw away all of his personal photos and home movies.

Aaaand another favorite from the year of 1989, as requested by Brian. In a 2009 interview, Stone Roses lead singer Ian Brown explained that he "didn't actually want people to adore me. I was trying to say then, if you want to be adored, it's like a sin, like lust or gluttony or something like that."

Ladytron's new album Time's Arrow is out now! Ladytron are an English electronic band formed in Liverpool in 1999. The band's name was taken from the song "Ladytron" by Roxy Music. Former Roxy Music member Brian Eno said in 2009, "Ladytron are, for me, the best of English pop music. They're the kind of band that really only appears in England, with this funny mixture of eccentric art-school dicking around and dressing up, with a full awareness of what's happening everywhere musically, which is kind of knitted together and woven into something quite new."

Vocalist and lyricist Valentine Caulfield says of the song, “‘Injury Detail’ was inspired by the idea of being trapped in a liminal space, with the guitars creating a seemingly limitless and undefined landscape. The vocals act as a guide to possible salvation, or perhaps something of a more sinister intent.” The pulsating single foregrounds industrial, rave-ready beats alongside Valentine's dark-toned French vocals.

"This Time Tomorrow" is the eighth track from the Kinks' 1970 album. It was written by Ray Davies. Ray Davies said of the song's inspiration: "I felt that I'd lost contact with my family. Because I'd been in a pop music bubble for five years, and I didn't know the people around me anymore. 'This Time Tomorrow' was about transience, and an ephemeral world. Clouds, and where do we play tomorrow, and what am I doing as a person tomorrow? It's a floating song, and I was floating into a different era. Going with the flow for a while, until I work out where I want to be."

I've got these lines before it and these after it and I have no line to go in this one spot. I'm thirsty, so he's going to get a beer now, that's what he's going to do.'"

Helmet was formed in 1989 by vocalist/guitarist Page Hamilton after he left the alternative rock group Band of Susans. Hamilton would recruit guitarist Peter Mengede, bassist Henry Bogdan, and drummer John Stanier. Having not settled on a name yet, Mengede's then-wife Reyne Cuccuro suggested the Germanic name of "helmuth", meaning spirit, protector, or courage. Having misinterpreted her, Hamilton thought she was referring to the helmet protective gear. Thinking it was "a pretty cool name for a band", Hamilton went with the Anglicized spelling and the band was named Helmet.
