From Doves second studio album The Last Broadcast, released in 2002. Following the success of their debut album Lost Souls and subsequent tours of the United Kingdom and their first tour of North America, the band entered the studio in January 2001 to begin work on the follow-up album. "When we went back into the studio this time, we were determined to get rid of the perception that people had of us," said Jimi Goodwin in an interview with NME. Jez Williams, the band's frontman, told NME, "This time around, we had a lot more confidence." In another interview with Spinner, Jez furthered, "It was like a big burst of energy... it affected our songwriting. We wanted it to be optimistic, more hopeful." The band moved away from the Cheetham Hill studio they had recorded Lost Souls in for Revolution Studios in Manchester, Parr Street Studios in Liverpool, Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios in Bath, The Dairy and 2 kHz Studios in London, and a cottage in Lancashire.

Final Straw was Snow Patrol's third studio album and their debut on a major-label in 2003. The band's A&R representative Jim Chancellor explained the reasons for choosing rock producer Jacknife Lee to oversee the record by saying, "I wanted a record for them that was bigger and bolder and a lot different than their previous records. I wanted them to make a more of a rock album than an indie record." Chancellor, Lee and the band chose fifteen songs to start working on out of an original pool of 24. Critical to the new direction was Gary Lightbody's development into a more rounded songwriter.

"Exile in Guyville" was written by Phair as a song-by-song reply to the Rolling Stones' 1972 album, "Exile on Main St." and this song corresponds to "Tumbling Dice." Phair recalled in a 2010 interview: "I remember thinking the most important song happens at the fifth song. Because in my mind 'Tumbling Dice' is the big radio hit. I was like, I need to do the big radio hit there, which is funny because 'Never Said' ended up being the radio hit off that record for me."

Mojo magazine, in its May 2013 edition, asked Kim Deal if she had a sense this song would be a hit. She replied: "Did we record a song that opened with me saying, 'Check 1-2,' and then loads of vocal feedback from my brother's harmonica mike, and think, 'This is destined for radio?' That was the sort of thing that didn't get you played on the radio then. We thought no one would play it."

Merge will be releasing The Collected Works of Neutral Milk Hotel, a limited edition boxset in February! The album was originally released in 1998 and was the second studio album released by the band. The album's lyrics are surrealistic and opaque, with themes ranging from nostalgia to love, and were partially inspired by The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank.

"I decided I'd write one hundred love songs as a way of introducing myself to the world. Then I realized how long that would be. So I settled on sixty-nine," said frontman Stephin Merritt.

This track was inspired by a quote that band leader Evan Dando had seen in a Sydney newspaper in reference to a kid called Ray who kept getting kicked out of every school he went to.

In an interview with Spin magazine, Hatfield stated the song came about due to her fixation on existential longing. "I feel like something's missing," she said. "I almost feel like I have a twin who died at birth but no one ever told me that the twin existed. And with this song, I was trying to explore the idea of a sister who I never had."
