At Dawn was recorded at guitarist Johnny Quaid's rural family farm in Shelbyville, Kentucky, a city outside Louisville. The group converted an apartment above a three-car garage at the property into a home studio, which they called Above the Cadillac. Singer Jim James recorded his vocals in an abandoned grain silo, utilizing its natural reverb

Of "A Random Act of Kindness," he says "It’s a song about the menacing nature of the sun rising during a dark time in one’s life only to further illuminate their pain and suffering — and how during these periods it is often the selfless acts of strangers that keeps a person going."

From Deerhunter's fifth album, released in 2010 to universal critical acclaim.
"This was the most mesmerizing, invigorating indie record I’d heard in years — one that swirled together decades of rock history into something visceral and ephemeral all at once, dark and mysterious yet plainly accessible, structurally adventurous while maintaining an unmistakable stylistic imprint. It was the sound of a band ascending to the peak of its powers." Read a 10-year anniversary retrospective, written in 2020: www.stereogum.com.

Dear KEXP DJ,
I would like to request Loose Change by The Highwomen.
Please dedicate this song to all the nurses and staff in the blood draw and chemo infusion rooms at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. Today is my last infusion. This part of my cancer treatment was made joyful as part of me looked forward to being with these compassionate humans. They continue to show up for us in snow, sleet and pandemic. My we treat them as the shiny Pennie’s they are. They certainly made me feel loved and shiny.
I’ll never see a group so appreciative of a box of oranges and apples. They are worthy of so much more. Music and fresh fruit is a start.
Sincerely,
Amanda from Bellingham

"Northern Town" started life with a different title. Nick Laird-Clowes told Mojo that he had befriended Paul Simon at one point and the two stayed in touch. He recalled: "I played him the song and he asked, 'What are you going to call it - 'Ah Hey Ma Ma Ma?' I told him that we intended to name it 'Morning Lasted All Day.' 'That's no good,' he said and so I came up with 'Life In A Northern Town.' which he thought was a great title." - bit.ly

Pixies covering the great Leonard Cohen in 1991 with their version of, "I Can't Forget".
This track originally appeared on Cohen's 1988 release, "I'm Your Man".
The Breeders' history began when Kim Deal, bassist of the Pixies, began writing new material while the Pixies were touring Surfer Rosa in Europe with Throwing Muses. As neither band had plans in the immediate future, Deal discussed possible side projects with Throwing Muses guitarist Tanya Donelly. Rest was history! thebreedersmusic.com
The New Pornographers have just announced a new album called Continue as a Guest coming March 31 via Merge Records. The song was co-written with Dan Bejar (Destroyer), “Really Really Light” and is described as a refashioning of a cutting-room-floor track from the band’s acclaimed 2014 album Brill Bruisers. “Part of my process throughout the years has been messing with things I never finished. I really liked Dan’s chorus, and for a while I was just trying to write something that I felt like belonged with it,” A.C.
Newman shares. “I was thinking of the Aloe Blacc song ‘The Man’ which interpolated the chorus from Elton John’s ‘Your Song’ and thought it would be fun to interpolate a song that no one knows. Not trying to sound like Aloe Blacc, just doing some interpolating of my own. It became a game of writing a verse that felt like a part of the same song. In my mind, I was striving for a little Jeff Lynne–era Tom Petty, a classic go-to.”

Peter Gabriel has just released a new single called “Panopticom" featuring Brian Eno on synthesizer and bells.
In a press release, Gabriel says: "(This) is based on an idea I have been working on to initiate the creation of an infinitely expandable accessible data globe: the Panopticom. We are beginning to connect a like-minded group of people who might be able to bring this to life, to allow the world to see itself better and understand more of what’s really going on."

"On Grace & Dignity" came to be in winter 2020 when he lost his job in lockdown and moved back to his parents’ house. The only work he found find was as a worker at a building site outside of Truro.
From Woods: “It was such a bleak winter – waist-deep in mud digging holes and rolling out turf on top of building waste, really grim stuff, which became the backdrop to the stories I was trying to write." He cited Raymond Carver, Lydia Davis and Richard Hugo as influences for the album.
