Good morning, a very happy Friday, and welcome to The Morning Show with the handsome John Richards! Today, December 9th, is the last day to get in your votes for your favorite albums of the year: www.kexp.org We're so glad you're here! -- This lead single from Avery's new album features HAAi and Kelly Lee Owens. -- “’Ultra Truth’ finds me in a different place to where I’ve been before,” Avery said of the release. “My previous albums have all focused on the idea of music being an escape or a distraction from the world but that’s not the case this time. “For me this album is about looking directly into the darkness, not running away from it. There’s a way through these times but it involves keeping the important people in your life close to you and navigating the noise together. This is an intentionally heavy and dense album, the hooks often hidden in dusty corners. I’m no longer dealing in a misty-eyed euphoria. ‘Ultra Truth’ is a distorted fever dream of a record: riled, determined and alive.”: bit.ly

Norwegian singer Aurora co-wrote this song with The Chemical Brothers and is featured on vocals. The duo said, "Aurora really made this by coming up with these amazing images. Sonics-wise, there are a lot of ideas and a lot of movement. There are moments where it almost feels that whole thing has gone too far, the way it builds and then you’re back down. It's a rolling psychedelic journey, for want of a better word." -- Aurora was live in the KEXP studio in 2018: www.youtube.com.

Lyrically, the song is centered around clips of an interview with Rickie Lee Jones, who talks dreamily of the fluffy clouds in the Texas skies of her childhood. The conversation comes from a CD that was distributed to record stores and media outlets to promote her 1989 album "Flying Cowboys." Jones later said in interviews that the odd nasal tonality of her voice was the result of a heavy cold. The song also includes a guitar riff from American minimalist composer Steve Reich's "Electric Counterpoint," as recorded by Pat Metheny, and a harmonica sample from Ennio Morricone's "The Man With The Harmonica" from the soundtrack of the 1968 spaghetti Western, "Once Upon a Time in the West

"So tell me where to put my love Do I wait for time to do what it does?..." Like many of us, the COVID-19 lockdown really threw Florence + the Machine frontwoman Florence Welch. Unable to do the things she loves - going to clubs, dancing, performing on stage – Welch also experienced writer's block, which prevented her from putting her love of music into writing. She wrote this song about her search for a creative outlet in a pandemic era. -- Ironically, this song where Welch bemoans her creative standstill became her creative breakthrough. It broke her writer's block and opened the floodgates for the other songs on Dance Fever.

These beloved sisters will be at The Paramount Theatre (with special guest Hurray for the Riff Raff) on Wednesday, May 24th, 2023. -- First Aid Kit says of this new single, "Out of My Head": "We wrote this song last year together with songwriter and producer Björn Yttling. It was the first time we wrote for First Aid Kit with someone else and it was very inspiring. The song was written in the spur of the moment, almost like a stream of consciousness. It's about feeling stuck inside your own thoughts and desperately wanting to escape." bit.ly

"Many of the tracks on 'Now Is' were conceived as miniature scores to film clips or as deliberate counterpoints to the sinister tone of 2021’s 'Overflow," but they’re still beholden to [Ryan Lee West--Rival Console] West’s usual palette of stuttering synths, sparse rhythms, and reverberating flourishes." Martin Gore in 1998: "The whole 'Songs Of Faith And Devotion' project started off with the basic principle that we wanted to become more live, spontaneous and have a lot more performances involved. So that whole album turned out to be the rockiest that we've ever wanted to achieve. 'I Feel You' is probably the pinnacle of that and it's about the closest we're going to come to sounding like a real authentic rock band."

Peter Hook denied a drug connection in this song: "'True Faith' features some of the best New Order lyrics in my opinion, but no, it is not about heroin, that is not something that any of our lyrics ever touched on. I think it's clear to see though that the lyrics do reflect being under some sort of influence." Neil Tennant's lyrics were written as a satire of Thatcherism and its embodiment of conspicuous consumption in the United Kingdom during the 1980s. The Pet Shop singer penned them after his bandmate, keyboardist Chris Lowe, asked him to make up a lyric based around the line "let's make lots of money." This song was written during the Pet Shop Boys' formative years, in 1983. They recorded it in 1984 with the American dance producer Bobby O, but that version was never released. After issuing "West End Girls" that year on Epic Records, they had a fall-out with Bobby O and moved on to EMI Records, which released "Opportunities" as their first single on the label in July 1985.
