Mt. Fog is a project of local artist Carolyn B. During a lonely time in Olympia, WA, living in a house with no internet, she began experimenting with making loops on her sister's old keyboard with a pirated version of Reason, she says in this interview with Tape Deck Podcast. She brings to Mt. Fog her previous experience as a classical violinist and as a member of a Slavic chorus who sang mostly traditional Bulgarian women’s music. The result is a unique sound she dubs ''forest folktronica'' on her Bandcamp page. Stay tuned for her upcoming sophomore LP, Spells of Silence. Catch Weyes Blood at the Showbox on March 23rd! Weyes Blood, aka Natalie Mering, said of the song: “Technology is harvesting our attention away from each other. We all have a ‘Grapevine’ entwined around our past with unresolved wounds and pain. Being in love doesn’t necessarily mean being together. Why else do so many love songs yearn for a connection?” weyesblood.bandcamp.com

A recently unearthed Oasis song that Noel Gallagher thought was lost forever until he started digging through a pile of unlabeled CDs during a fit of COVID-19 boredom. Noel: "As far as I'm aware there is only one version of this tune 'out there' from an Oasis soundcheck in Hong Kong about 15 years ago? I'm not sure whether the sound-check version pre-dates the demo as there's no date on the CD. I know some of you love this tune so we thought we'd put it 'out there' for you to enjoy/argue over."

WORDS FROM KRISTIN: - "On tour, my youngest son, Wyatt, found a cherry cough drop on the back seat of the car and asked, "is this a ruby?" I figure he'll be doing that for most of his life, but all I could think to tell him was that cough drops are more valuable than rubies when you have a cold." hersh-head.tripod.com

Former Walkmen member Peter Matthew Bauer’s back with a new track, and reveals, "'Skulls' came out of a really strong period of writing music without thinking. I had stumbled onto this new style of guitar playing that brought me a lot of joy. I started using a distortion pedal for the first time in my life and discovered I could play all these riffs. 'Skulls' came out of this kind of endless waterfalling soloing I played for hours and then cut down to what you hear on tape. bit.ly Skulls was a featured Song of the Day at KEXP recently, which you can download, for free here: bit.ly

Beacon plays tonight at the Nectar Lounge! From Beacon's bandcamp: "Perceptions of time and its effects have changed dramatically in recent memory. At some point in the past, four years might have been an average wait between new albums for a busy touring band like Beacon. But in our current post-quarantine, perma-pandemic reality, four years can contain lifetimes. ... I see Along The Lethe as Jacob and I preserving an extraordinary moment of our lives," explains Thomas. "It contains the most difficult and exalted experiences we’ve had creating music together. Celebrating Pharoah Sanders on his birthday & in light of his recent passing. Spirit was the overwhelming force in Sanders' music: It emanated from his tenor and soprano saxophones in fiery blasts or a murmuring flicker, and it suffused his ensembles, which featured several generations of improvisers equally willing to dig in or soar free. - n.pr In 1964, John Coltrane asked Sanders to sit in with his band - what followed was some of the most controversial years in the history of jazz, with a total desertion of traditional jazz concepts. Off of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs latest release, Cool It Down, which dropped September 30th. “To all who have waited, our dear fans, thank you, our fever to tell has returned, and writing these songs came with its fair share of chills, tears, and euphoria when the pain lifts and truth is revealed,” Karen O said of the album. “Don’t have to tell you how much we’ve been going through in the last nine years since our last record, because you’ve been going through it too, and we love you and we see you, and we hope you feel the feels from the music we’ve made. Erroll Garner's Concert by the Sea happened 67 years ago today! There was no plan to record the concert officially. The release came about because Garner's personal manager, Martha Glaser, spotted backstage that a tape recorder was running. The recording was being made by a recording engineer for the Armed Forces Radio Network, "a jazz fan and scholar named Will Thornbury, strictly for the enjoyment of himself and his fellow servicemen". Glaser took the tape, put it into album form, and then played it for the head of Columbia Records' jazz division, George Avakian, who decided to release it. It sold by the truckload.

Happy birthday Paul Simon! 81 today! This Everly Brothers classic was a favorite of Simon & Garfunkel. Paul Simon tells the story about how when he and Art Garfunkel were kids, they took a bus to the nearest record store so they could buy the single, and it became a staple of their shows when they started performing. It was always a fun song for them to play, especially when the audience would supply the backbeat. For their Bridge Over Troubled Water recording, they recorded audiences clapping from some of their shows to incorporate into the mix.

Lasting just 1:39, this is the last song on Bridge Over Troubled Water. It's a solo piece by Paul Simon; the only one on the album with just his voice. There is a note of contrition in the song, Simon explained in the Making of Bridge Over Troubled Water documentary, "That's just to say I haven't forgotten what I did. I was not an angel, that's for sure."

Celebrating the music of 1998 this week! The lyric was written by Woody Guthrie, but Guthrie never recorded it or wrote music down for it. No exact date is known for the lyrics - it could have been anytime from the 1930s until it 1940s, although Guthrie had. Although Guthrie's recording career was more or less over by 1947, his estate approached Billy Bragg in 1995 to set Woody's handwritten, unrecorded lyrics to music. Thus the song is a collaboration piece that took place 30 years after Guthrie died. Simple and direct, Guthrie's words paint a picture of sleeping beneath the beautiful California stars, and the lovely dreams that follow. bit.ly

Celebrating the music of 1998! In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is the second studio album by Neutral Milk Hotel, released on February 10, 1998, by Merge Records.
...
Neutral Milk Hotel biographer Kim Cooper believes In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is one of the most heavily distorted albums ever made, but also notes the lack of equipment such as Big Muffs or distortion pedals. Mangum liked having a layer of distortion over the music, but Schneider decided to not use standard effects equipment. Instead, Schneider used heavy compression and placed a Bellari RP-220 tube mic pre-amp close to his guitar. Schneider then ran the sound through a mixing console and maxed out the sound on a cassette tape. This process was done for nearly every instrument used on In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. Schneider claimed that the nonlinearities of microphone distortion gave the album its unique "warm" quality.

Discussing new single ‘Safe and Sound’, Robbie Furze of The Big Pink quoted the song’s lyrics: “Dancing with these vultures in my fugitive apartment / Angels with their wings clipped gunning for the love that’s ours”. He explained: “These lines sum up the record perfectly. I moved to L.A. to find my record and I found it, but at a price. I was chased by every temptation known to mankind. I was promised love. I was promised wealth. I was promised the world. Drugs, women, stardom, all the cliches hounding me and biting at my heels. I got caught up in it. I was strung out and I got lost. I can now put my hands up and admit that. “For a while I lost my wife. I lost my family and friends and mostly, I lost my mind.” Read NME's full interview here: www.nme.com

#1998 The album is often thought of as sounding "divided" due to the Reids' crumbling relationship, as Jim Reid recalled: "Me and William weren't really getting along at all. That last year we barely even spoke. Munki is one of my favorite albums, but it was really divided. William would go into the studio with the rest of the band and record while I wasn't there, and then I'd go in with them when William wasn't there."
