'Music for the Masses' was released 35 years ago today! At least here in the US it was. The UK got it a few days earlier.
Band members Andy Fletcher and Martin Gore both explained this album's title was conceived as a joke.
Fletcher said, "The title's ... a bit tongue-in-cheek, really. Everyone is telling us we should make more commercial music, so that's the reason we chose that title."

When Depeche Mode was interviewed by French magazine 'Best', Martin Gore said (translated from French):
"'The Things You Said' is that which 'Somebody' isn't, and that's why I love this song. It has a nice side and a bad side. It's about treason, about a man who is disappointed by someone he loved, but luckily, he has real friends by his side. This is one of the songs I have to perform right at the front of the stage. I like having a slot of one or two tracks, but I could not go on for any longer, it's way too stressful."

‘The Exploding Boy’ was a b-side to ‘In Between Days’, the lead single from The Head on the Door. The Head on the Door marked a transition towards sunnier music for the band, with Smith noting an influence from Siouxsie and the Banshees. He told Melody Maker in 1985 regarding Head on the Door; “It reminds me of the Kaleidoscope album, the idea of having lots of different sounding things, different colours”.

This song is the opening track of Superstition, the 10th studio album by Siouxsie and the Banshees, released in 1991.
The band recorded this because they needed a B-side for their "Over Your Shoulder" single. They found a studio near Manchester and did it in a day.
Ray Manzarek of The Doors played keyboards on the 1987 version of this track.

This was the band's breakthrough hit in the US. It's success originated from MTV, which had only just come on air, showing their video of the band in the Sri Lanka jungle (they also shot the clips for "Lonely in Your Nightmare" and "Save a Prayer" on this trip). It was an early sensation particularly in the Deep South where the channel was being trialled. In a pre-MTV world where Duran Duran could be heard but not seen, it is unlikely that they would have broken through in America.
Duran Duran were asked in an interview with Q magazine (February 2008) for their memories of the video. Drummer Roger Taylor recalled: "We'd go to Alabama or Texas and the girls would be screaming and the guys in cowboy hats would be looking at us with clenched fists. I don't suppose they'd seen so many guys in make-up pouting before." Singer Simon Le Bon added: "It worked for us though. Video made it possible to create a cult of personality across the globe. You arrive on a tour bus and they'd already seen us on a yacht in a video."

“We started work on this project early in the pandemic, and its themes were directly inspired by that time,” Depeche Mode’s Martin Gore explained in a statement. “After Fletch’s passing, we decided to continue as we’re sure this is what he would have wanted, and that has really given the project an extra level of meaning.”

The band brought in Anton Corbijn to do the visuals for the Music For The Masses album. For this song, he put together an 8-minute black-and-white clip. The video, which was included on the Depeche Mode compilation Strange, didn't shed any light on the meaning of the song, as we see a series of rather disjointed images, including a pair of shoes that walk themselves.

At the end of the video the duo end up in a dumpster. Matt Johnson explained why to TwoThousand: "Kim had been wanting to do a film clip of us playing in really awkward spaces, you know like in a raft in a pool or something, but she's actually really claustrophobic and really hates getting water in her eyes, and the dumpster scene - we were told it was going to be a clean dumpster - but what the director meant by clean, was that they had taken all the garbage out of it - but it was still covered in the grime, this thick, thick grime stench. When we cut Kim literally flew out of the thing, without even touching the sides - I swear."

Joan Jett was touring England as a member of an all teenage girl group called The Runaways when she discovered this song. She wanted to record it with The Runaways, but the other members didn't like the song and made the mistake of passing it up. In 1979, Jett recorded it with Paul Cook and Steve Jones of The Sex Pistols and released it as a B-side. Finally, in 1981, Jett recorded the song with her band The Blackhearts, resulting in a monster hit.
