Gustavo Alfredo Santaolalla, born in 1951, is an Argentine musician, composer, and record producer. He is known for composing his film scores with his collaborator and acclaimed director Alejandro González Iñárritu. He also composed the original scores for the video games The Last of Us (2013) and The Last of Us Part II (2020). He won Academy Awards for Best Original Score in two consecutive years, first for Brokeback Mountain (2005) and then Babel (2006).

Leaonard Cohen's 'Songs of Love and Hate' includes some of his most famous compositions, including "Joan of Arc," "Avalanche," and "Famous Blue Raincoat." Avalanche's lyrics are based on a poem he had previously written. A Fistful of Dollars is a 1964 Western film directed by Sergio Leone and starring Clint Eastwood in his first leading role, The film, an international co-production between Italy, West Germany, and Spain, was filmed on a low budget (reported to be $200,000), and Eastwood was paid $15,000 for his role.

Hans Florian Zimmer is a German film score composer and music producer. He has won two Oscars and four Grammys, and has been nominated for two Emmys and a Tony. Zimmer was also named on the list of Top 100 Living Geniuses, published by The Daily Telegraph.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails recorded this version of David Bowie’s “Life on Mars?” for the HBO series 'Watchmen'. The instrumental appears in the seventh episode, “An Almost Religious Awe.” Reznor has referred to Bowie as a “mentor” and “fatherly figure” in a written memorial, has contributed to the singer’s 1997 single “I’m Afraid of Americans” and even appeared in the music video for the track.

The tom toms skins on Ringo's kit were slackened, and the recording was heavily compressed and echoed to give perhaps the most remarkable drum sound on any Beatles song. Then there were the tape loops. McCartney had discovered that by removing the erase head on his reel-to-reel tape machine, he could saturate a recording with sound. There were six loops used on ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’: a seagull noise, actually a distorted recording of McCartney laughing; an orchestra playing a B flat chord; notes played on a Mellotron’s flute setting; a second Mellotron on its violin setting; a finger rubbing the rim of a wine glass, heard midway through the song only in the stereo mix; and a distorted sitar which is most clearly heard in the instrumental break following the lines “It is being, it is being”.

Hounds of Love received critical acclaim upon its release and it is considered by many fans and music critics to be Bush's best album. Recording work began for Hounds of Love in Summer 1983 after the studio upgrade, with the album being constructed in preliminary form. Rather than re-record music, Bush took the original recordings and built upon them during the sessions, starting in November 1983. After five months, she began overdubbing and mixing the album in a process that took a year.

Joni Mitchell delivered her first full set in more than 20 years this weekend, surprising attendees at the Newport Folk Festival alongside country star, Washington's Brandi Carlile. The unsuspecting crowd roared as the singer-songwriter stepped onto the stage in her first public performance since suffering a debilitating brain aneurysm in 2015. www.npr.org ===== 'Blue', the fourth studio album by Joni Mitchell, explores various facets of relationships, from infatuation to insecurity. Mitchell's earliest public performances of "A Case of You" contain six lines that had changed by the time Blue was recorded. The line "I am as constant as a northern star" is an allusion to Caesar's "I am constant as the Northern Star" from the Shakespeare play Julius Caesar, while the quoted line "Love is touching souls" is inspired by the German poet Rainer Maria Rilke.

The Joke is for people who struggle to fit the molds made for them by modern society. Carlile said on NPR of the track, "There are so many people feeling misrepresented. So many people feeling unloved. The song is just for people that feel under-represented."

Brandi Carlile covering "Black Hole Sun" with members of Soundgarden -- the 1994 hit. Brandi first performed this with the group at the Chris Cornell tribute "I Am the Highway" in January 2019; for Record Store Day 2020 she released this collab as a 12" EP titled "A Rooster Says", along with their version of "Searching WIth My Good Eye Closed."

This one was written by Chris Cornell. Guitarist Kim Thayil on the song's guitar solo: "A blues-type thing, exactly. And after I recorded it, the rest of the band loved it, and the assistant engineer loved it, but I kept feeling like it was too stiff. I was listening to it, going, 'You know, it doesn't have my trademark finger vibrato', like you can hear on Ultramega OK and Badmotorfinger. I wasn't quite satisfied with it, but because everyone else really enjoyed it, eventually I let it go... I finally had to relax and trust the guys that it was cool." bit.ly

Johnny Cash's version of Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage" earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. During at least three live performances by Soundgarden (July 21, 1996, in Knoxville, Tennessee, at Forks In The River, early November 1996 at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, Illinois, and at Soundgarden's last pre-breakup show at the Blaisdell Arena, Honolulu, Hawaii, on February 9, 1997), Cornell introduced the song with a dedication to Cash. On Cornell's Higher Truth acoustic tour in late 2015, he started including "Rusty Cage" in the set-list, employing Cash's country-rock arrangement of the song. bit.ly

The Highwaymen were an American country music supergroup, composed of four of country music's biggest artists who pioneered the outlaw country subgenre: Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson. Mick Fleetwood recruited The University of Southern California Trojan Marching Band, after he encountered a brass band outside his hotel room in the French fishing village of Barfleur. “I was in a room in the town square with a horrific hangover, and I was woken by the sound of the local brass band that relentlessly went round and round the square,” he said in 2015. “As the day went on, they got drunker and drunker. Beyoncé’s historic headlining Coachella performance took place on two weekends in April 2018. Beyoncé was the first Black woman to headline the festival and her performances received immediate widespread acclaim from fans and critics alike for the staging and celebration of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Beauty and the Beat is the debut album from Californian new wave band the Go-Go's, released in 1981. In the late 1970s, Belinda Carlisle, Jane Wiedlin, and Margot Olavarria met while attending punk rock shows in California. The three attended the Sex Pistols' final performance in San Francisco in January 1978, and afterwards were inspired to form their own band. Although none of them actually knew how to play instruments, they quickly learned, and began playing in Hollywood nightclubs under the name the Go-Go's.

The Go-Go's cover! Terry Hall's version with his group The Fun Boy Three hit #7 in the UK. Jane Wiedlin told Uncut magazine: "I was so shocked when I heard the Fun Boy 3 version, because it's so moody. I don't think Terry kept a copy of the lyrics, because he got some of the words wrong." - bit.ly

Written by band member Theodore “Ted” Ottaviano, this heartstruck anthem describes the frustrations of a girl with feelings for a boy who likes boys. In a 2016 Village Voice interview, Ted added that the song was “written about Boy Bar, which was a very exclusive gay club in the East Village.”

"There She Goes" is a song with one crazy story, so hang on. It was written by the Liverpool singer and guitarist Lee Mavers, and recorded by his band The La's. The La's released it on their only album, titled The La's. "There She Goes" was released as a single, not once, not twice, but four times!

The female backing vocals on this song are by Juliana Hatfield, who also played bass on the album. She released her first solo album, Hey Babe, earlier in 1992. At this point, The Lemonheads were essentially an Evan Dando solo project. On the "It's a Shame About Ray" album, David Ryan was the drummer.

We were driving to Santa Barbara and a new song by Prince came on, so we pulled over somewhere and got the tape... Prince did come into the studio the night I called him and told him about the song, and he played incredible synthesizer on it. And then he just walked out of my life, and I didn't see him for a long time. It was extraordinary."
