Released in 2003, the record is a concept album, exploring a theme of long-distance romance. Singer, songwriter (and total mensch) Ben Gibbard penned the lyrics, which are somber and focus on the need to be loved.

Karen O wrote this song about her then- boyfriend Angus Andrew when he left her to accept a job offer. Andrew is lead singer of the band Liars. "It's a love song, rooted in the emotion of missing someone," she said.

On this day, Bob Dylan releases "Like A Rolling Stone." Recorded July 15th and 16th of that year, during a difficult two-day preproduction, Dylan struggled to find the essence of the song. A breakthrough was made when it was tried in a rock music format, and rookie session musician Al Kooper improvised the Hammond B2 organ riff for which the track is known. Kooper, at that time a 21-year-old session guitarist, was not originally supposed to play but was present in the studio as a guest of producer Tom Wilson. When the session keyboard player stepped out, Kooper sat down at the organ. Wilson belittled Kooper's organ skills, but did not forbid him to play. As Kooper later put it, "He just sort of scoffed at me ... He didn't say 'no'—so I went out there." When Dylan heard a playback of the song, he insisted that the organ be turned up in the mix, despite Wilson's protestations that Kooper was "not an organ player." Columbia Records was unhappy with both the song's length at over six minutes and its heavy electric sound, and was hesitant to release it. It was only when, a month later, a copy was leaked to a new popular music club and heard by influential DJs that the song was put out as a single. Although radio stations were reluctant to play such a long track, "Like a Rolling Stone" reached No. 2 in the US and became a worldwide hit.

I added it to the tail end of her night-time playlist immediately. We listened to this a lot, in the quiet & stillness of those evenings. Music cuts through time, looking to the future and then, after so many years, bringing you unexpectedly back. Cheers & be well!

Young Liars is the first major release by the New York City band TV on the Radio. Released in 2003 on Touch & Go Records, the EP helped establish the band's distinctive blending of electronica, doo wop, post-rock, and avant-garde styles.
This reflection on anxieties personal and political was dedicated to Jeanne Loriod, an early performer on the musical instrument the ondes Martenot, who died shortly before the album came out. Jonny Greenwood played the ondes Martenot on this and several Hail to the Thief songs. It's the one that sounds like a Theremin.

Longwave formed at the dawn of the New York indie rock resurgence in 1999. The Brooklyn-based band has made many records and toured all over the world.
