M83's Anthony Gonzalez’s comment on the use of the saxophone: "Sometimes a song needs an element to be finished. You know that this element has been overused in the past and is considered clichéd or cheesy, but the song needs it. With this album, the whole idea was to do something and have no regrets." bit.ly ilovem83.bandcamp.com

Sudan Archives will perform at Capitol Hill Block Party on July 22nd and return to Seattle later this year at Neumos on Saturday, October 1st! She said of this song: "I feel like there’s an American standard of what beautiful hair is, and I wanted to show in this video that’s not what all beauty is; to showcase different hairstyles and different types of women and their hair. I was inspired by India.Arie’s “I Am Not My Hair,” one of the first songs I heard about this subject. She talks about extensions and weaves and natural hair and nappy hair, and that she’s not her hair; she won’t conform to the comparisons that would come up if you had a weave or sew-in or natural hair or Afro—that doesn’t represent her."

Fever to Tell was the Yeah Yeah Yeah's debut studio album. By 2002, Yeah Yeah Yeahs had achieved a respected reputation for their live performances and critical acclaim for their debut EP, leading to several overtures from major record labels. The band wanted to finance their debut album themselves and chose to record at the low-budget Headgear Studio in Brooklyn. "It was really important for us to do it on our turf, on our terms", lead singer Karen O later told Spin. "We were all living together, and all the money we used to fund it came out of our pocket."

Hello John in the Morning, I'm glad that you are back today! Last Friday we started the process of getting emergency mental-health care for our youngest child (who is a trans boy). I have definitely been in the mode of dealing and assuring that he has everything that he needs, filling out endless forms, talking to rounds of mental-health professionals and such, so it wasn't until I started listening to your show today that I let myself cry. I'm proud of him for getting help---he voluntarily entered a behavioral health facility. But I wish that I could have done something sooner to help him to understand that he is not alone. He loves the Cure. Could you please play "Boys Don't Cry"? Thank you. Heather

"Supernova" is from 'Whip-Smart,' released on this day in 1994. Phair described Whip-Smart as particularly difficult to make because at the time she didn't have many songs that weren't about the music industry, which displeased her manager. In total, Whip-Smart took about one month to record. The album was recorded in two distinct sessions: the first in August 1993 in Chicago, and the second in February 1994 in the Bahamas. bit.ly Here is the video for "Supernova": youtu.be

Morning John and Owen, just back from a week and a ½ in Italy with the family to celebrate my dad’s 75th and step mom’s 70th bday. Didn’t get to listen much there due to time diff so will be on heavy archive rotation this week. In Sienna, saw this cool scooter in front of a small restaurant with a ska sticker ala the Two Tone record art. I stopped to admire and take a pic, and the owner came out and asked if I liked it, and we started talking ska, the Specials, the Beat, etc. He was so happy that I noticed it and stopped and we have a lovely conversation in broken English/Italian. Made me think of you KEXP, and was a reminder that music connects us all, throughout the world, and is a force for goodness. With that, would love to please hear something by the Specials or the Beat this am to ease the transition back to the US – grazie mille! Salute’! Ian -- English Beat singer/guitarist Dave Wakeling said of this song: "I wrote it when I was a teenager. I wrote it before The Beat started. And it was about turning from a teenager to someone in their 20s, and realizing that the effortless promise for your teenage years was not necessarily going to show that life was so simple as you started to grow up."

“Porcelain” was the sixth single off Moby’s commercial breakthrough Play. The song was based on particularly painful breakup. Moby recalled: "I was involved with this really, really wonderful woman, and I loved her very much. But I knew deep in my heart of hearts that we had no business being romantically involved. So, it’s sort of about being in love with someone but knowing you shouldn’t be with them."

Sending a happy birthday to Kevin Haskins, born this day in 1960, English drummer, songwriter, composer, and member of Bauhaus, Love and Rockets, and Tones on Tail. Formed in 1985, Love and Rockets was guitarist/vocalist Daniel Ash, bassist/vocalist David J, and drummer Kevin Haskins, all former members of the pioneering goth band Bauhaus. "Yin and Yang the Flower Pot Man" is ecstatically upbeat, offering a propulsive rhythm, flailing guitars, and insistent bass -- a compulsively danceable and bliss-inducing track. bit.ly Watch the video here: youtu.be.

Bandmember Pete Fijalkowski said of "Homeboy": This was written pre-Adorable when we were called the Candy Thieves, which I had formed in 1988 with my friend Wayne Peters on guitar, when we were on a Film Studies course together at Warwick University. I can still remember the day we wrote it. Wil started playing the bass line, and Kevin joined in on the floor tom. I sang a whole load of lines culled from other discarded songs, Wayne picked some notes, and then when it felt right I stepped on my distortion pedal to make it start feeding back, Kevin sensed it was time to move onto the snare and we all crashed in – it was beautiful. www.creation-records.com

Porridge Radio will be at Barboza on September 13th! Here’s what Porridge Radio member Dana Margolin had to say about the song: At the beginning it was a song about a power dynamic where I was in control, by the end it was about one where I had none. My friends always accuse me of making up idioms and using them like they are well known phrases and I think this song is full of those. I love the idea of something being sick at the seams, like it’s disintegrating from its core. I like things that are so simple they are universal. I wanted it to sound like when your heart breaks so badly that your entire body aches. I wanted it to feel like your soul is dropping out of your body. porridgeradio.bandcamp.com porridgeradio.com
