Saudade is a Portuguese word which means (approximately) nostalgic longing. This definition does sort of kill the romance behind the term, but it's hard to describe in English. It's not just nostalgia. It can be longing for a loved one or place. It can be the melancholy accompanying the realization that you will never know everything the world has to offer. It looks back at what has been and forward at what may never be. And that pretty much sums up the mood of Saudade by Love and Rockets. thatsongblog.blogspot.com

When This Is the Sea was presented to Island Records, Mike Scott suggested holding back the release of "The Whole of the Moon" as a single in favour of "Don't Bang the Drum" or "Medicine Bow" first. He felt that "The Whole of the Moon" was a "demanding song [with] lyrics crucial to people's appreciation of it" and so releasing a rockier track first was more likely to "arouse the public's attention". However Scott was unable to convince the label and "The Whole of the Moon" was released as the first single.

The Beths are releasing Expert In A Dying Field later this year, and today they’ve unveiled the resonant title track. “I really do believe that love is learned over time,” explains Elizabeth Stokes in a statement. “In the course of knowing a person, you accumulate so much information: their favorite movies, how they take their tea, how to make them laugh, how that makes you feel. And when relationships between people change, or end, all that knowledge doesn’t just disappear. The phrase ‘Expert in a Dying Field’ had been floating around my head for a few years, I was glad to finally capture it when writing this tune.” thebethsnz.bandcamp.com

Michael Hutchence wrote the song with Andrew Farriss - they were the songwriting dynamic duo in INXS. The song has all the group's hallmarks: a big, catchy guitar riff; a prominent saxophone part (played by group member Kirk Pengilly); and an inspirational vocal from Hutchence. -- Andrew Farriss had already made a demo tape with a song whose working title was "Funk Song No. 13," which evolved into "What You Need." Producer Chris Thomas listened to the demo for "Funk Song No. 13" and two other tapes, and picked this one because "it was great. I thought, 'I could listen to that groove for 10 minutes!' I said, 'Let's work with that groove.' So we went with that and in just two days it turned into the song that eventually broke them, 'What You Need.'"

"If it’s nigh on impossible to do The Verve justice in any short form the fact remains that they are a key element in the development of British rock music, and not just in the period when they were extant. Formed in 1989 in Wigan by Richard Ashcroft, Nick McCabe, Simon Jones and Peter Salisbury they fine-tuned their early psychedelic forays on a sequence of highly treasured EPs and soon became firm darlings of the independent and mainstream pop press as well as an influence on their peers – Oasis, in particular, were champions. Foals will be performing at Showbox SoDo on Saturday, November 12th! Frontman Yannis Philippakis had this to say about the album in a press release: “We wanted to refocus and do something that shared a DNA throughout the songs: a physicality, a danceability, and with energy and joyousness. It’s definitely the poppiest record we’ve ever made. I feel that with Everything Not Saved… we touched upon all of the facets of our sound up until that point. This time we wanted to find a new way to express ourselves.” Foals stopped by the KEXP studio back in 2013. Check out their full performance here: www.youtube.com lifeisyours.foals.co.uk

I like the contrast of it being happy, uplifting music and really dark lyrics. It’s not a minimal record, certainly compared to the first one. That’s because there’s been a lot more going on that needed to be said." --- Here's Working Men's Club live on KEXP At Home - www.youtube.com
