The song begins with an organ pedal point of an A note, accompanied by a recording of a monologue passage from a Bergen Student Newspaper, being recited by Mari Myren, referring to when Mogwai played a show on March 15th 1997 at the Hulen, in Bergen, Norway. Myren describes the band's music as "bigger than words and wider than pictures" and states that "If the stars had a sound, it would sound like this."

The band's first effort for Capitol Records was an album which was recorded before Come Down called The Black Album, which was rejected by Capitol for, according to frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor, containing "no hit songs". In a 1997 interview promoting Be Here Now, Noel Gallagher had the following to say about the first single: "I was going to make up some profound statement in the chorus but I couldn't come up with anything that fitted. Then I just thought 'All my people right here, right now, d'you know what I mean? Yeah, yeah.' Very vague, very ambiguous, that'll do. Look in the mirror and wink while you're singing it and it's quite saucy. And I love that line, 'Coming in a mess, going out in style'. We were a bunch of scruffs from Manchester and we're going out in a Rolls Royce."

This song is about fate and how it will always catch up with you. The band members used to warn each other that the "karma police" would get them if they didn't behave. Thom Yorke: "Karma is important. The idea that something like karma exists makes me happy. It makes me smile. 'Karma Police' is dedicated to everyone who works for a big firm. It's a song against bosses." bit.ly Radiohead "Karma Police" Live @ Lollapalooza 2016, Chicago: youtu.be

Here's an interview from 2017 with Sean Nelson on the 20th anniversary of "Flagpole Sitta": www.stereogum.com "The thing I really remember is, the one thing I didn’t have was the chorus. The chorus for most of the first year we had the song that we were playing it was just the backing vocal bits, which I always thought of as very much in line with the Turtles or something. But we had recorded the song and I thought, “Well, there needs to be words in the chorus. It can’t just be this.” So I went desperately flailing through my notebook and I found that line: “I’m not sick but I’m not well,” which was from another song, and then I basically just sang it and made up the other words on the mic. And I’m glad that I did..." www.kexp.org

An homage to The Beach Boys Pet Sounds, the tracks on Fantasma were written and recorded in the same order they appear on the album. Cornelius's goal in creating Fantasma was "to take the listener on a personal trip"; he envisioned the album as "a one-on-one experience between the music and the listener. ... It starts with you entering into the journey and ends with you returning to reality." Almost all of the tracks were named after existing bands, including Count Five, the Clash, and Microdisney. Buffalo Daughter's Moog Yamamoto appeared on "Mic Check" and "2010". Co-written with Brian Eno, Bowie said this song is not "...as truly hostile about Americans as say "Born in the U.S.A.": it's merely sardonic. I was traveling in Java when [its] first McDonald's went up: it was like, "for (bleep) sake." The invasion by any homogenized culture is so depressing, the erection of another Disney World in, say, Umbria, Italy, more so. It strangles the indigenous culture and narrows expression of life..."

For Fabio. == Around Christmas time, Grohl returned to his native Virginia shortly thereafter, and as he was going through an ongoing divorce decided to stay at a friend's house and use a sleeping bag on the floor. It was there that he said that he wrote it into a song proper in 45 minutes. The lyrics were inspired by ongoing romance with Louise Post of the band Veruca Salt: "That song's about a girl that I'd fallen in love with and it was basically about being connected to someone so much, that not only do you love them physically and spiritually, but when you sing along with them you harmonize perfectly". That's her on background doot doots.
