Steve Kilbey wrote Under the Milky Way with his then girlfriend, Swedish musician Karin Jansson. The couple, who share twin daughters, were visiting Kilbey’s mother on the New South Wales central coast. After dinner, Kilbey snuck outside to dodge his washing-up duties and enjoy a smoke. “Perhaps I looked up at the wonderful glittering heavens and was inspired – I don’t know,” he recounted years later. Kilbey drifted back indoors and began tinkering on the piano. Jansson sidled up and, before long, a melody had formed. “We agreed on the lyrics within three minutes,” he said.: bit.ly

"Love My Way" was the first Psychedelic Furs song to chart in America, where it reached #44 thanks in large part to exposure on MTV. To that point, most Americans only heard the band on college radio or at listening stations in independent record stores. After the song became a hit, the band moved to the States because they found the audience more receptive and they liked what New York had to offer. The Psychedelic Furs are playing ZooTunes at the Woodland Park Zoo on Sunday, August 7, with special guests X. www.zoo.org

Express is the second studio album by English alternative rock band Love and Rockets. It was released on 15 September 1986 on Beggars Banquet Records. An even greater departure from the band members' previous work as Bauhaus, the album's fusion of underground rock with pop stylings can be seen as an early example of alternative rock music, a genre that reached mainstream popularity in the early 1990s.

Commenting about the song to NME, Tor Maries aka Billy Nomates said: “Heels is about knowing who we are. It’s about acknowledging strength under scrutiny and pressure. It’s also about how playtime feels over. Stuff’s serious. We don’t know how any of what’s happening ends yet. There are about 10 threats every day at any given time that feel big enough to stop you from doing anything. It’s digging for a warrior approach to keep going.” KEXP's Owen Murphy interviewed Billy Nomates, who collaborated on the previous track with the Mods, for KEXP's Sound and Vision podcast, hosted by Emily Fox. soundcloud.com

Unlike most Clash songs, which were written by Joe Strummer and Mick Jones, "The Guns Of Brixton" was written by bass player Paul Simonon, who decided to get in on the songwriting himself. Written as a protest about the economic situation for UK youth at the time, it became one of the band's best-known songs and a staple of their live set. Simonon takes lead vocal duties on the song, which is about gangsters in his hometown of Brixton in South London. win.gs

Originally formed in 1987 by Buzz McCoy and Groovie Mann, the duo sought to create a worthy musical accompaniment that could be used as a soundtrack to trashy B-movies. The duo's initial project was to make a movie (in the style of Russ Meyer and John Waters) to be named "My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult." The movie never got off the ground, but McCoy and Mann used the aborted movie's title for the name of their just-formed group, as their over-the-top stage show was best described as "sensory overload" (featuring a revolving door of weird characters, props, and intense visuals).: www.allmusic.com

This first song on U2's debut album is an example of what would become The Edge's distinctive guitar style. He felt he could play only a few notes, but make it work by finding the right ones. For sound effects, bottles were thrown on the floor and bicycle wheels were spun and hit with bottles and knives. You can also hear a glockenspiel being played.

Ajudha shared, "Abortion is still illegal in many countries around the world and is shamed in even more. I wrote this song when a group of men tried to pass an anti abortion bill in the state of Alabama, America. I was angry at how in every corner of culture and society across every inch of the earth, men try to play God, again and again. But I am amazed at how humans are built with so much resistance and resilience for good when we know something is wrong and will always fight against it. This song is an act of resistance to those who try to control that which is not theirs to be in control of." bit.ly Catch her accompanying video here: bit.ly
