You know it's gonna be a day when you are on the bus heading into work tearing up to the music. We are not alone Carolyn == Good morning! It's a sunny day here in Seattle, but there's always a slight chance for Purple Rain. Prince Rogers Nelson, born on this day in 1958, was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and actor. He was a musical innovator and known for his eclectic work, flamboyant stage presence, extravagant dress and makeup, and wide vocal range. Yeah Yeah Yeahs are BACK! After announcing some shows and signing to Secretly Canadian, the trio has announced a brand-new album, Cool It Down, which will be out in September. “I see the younger generations staring down this threat, and they’re standing on the edge of a precipice, confronting what’s coming with anger and defiance,” Karen O said of the new song, "Spitting Off The Edge Of The World". “It’s galvanizing, and there’s hope there.” bit.ly

Good morning John and Owen, and SUNSHINE! We are here at the Hoh Rainforest on our last day in the woods and would love to hear A Forest by The Cure or Near Wild Heaven by REM. It is so beautiful out here and I love having KEXP as our soundtrack. Thank you and take care! You are not alone 💜 Jaimee -- Robert Smith has given varying explanations of his lyric for "A Forest." He has said the lyric was based upon a dream he had as a child where he was lost in the woods unable to escape, but later denied it and stated, "It's just about a forest."

“No Angels,” according to Robbie Furze, is “a track reflecting that moment when you understand that all you’ve set your sights on has led to a place far away from where you should be and everything you truly love. He adds: "It took sacrificing everything I’d built in London and moving to Los Angeles, a place I thought I needed to be in order to achieve my dreams, for me to realise that it was about much more than just myself. I had a moment of clarity when I understood what’s truly important and what I needed to do to get back to everything and everyone that I loved. That’s what this song is about." www.stereogum.com

This song was almost "the one that got away." Producer Chris Thomas told the band they needed one more guaranteed hit after they finished recording the Listen Like Thieves album. They thought it over that night, came in and finished the song in a day, just in time for the album to cut and ship. However, this isn't quite the magic trick it first appears; Andrew Farriss had already made a demo tape with a song whose working title was "Funk Song No. 13," which evolved into "What You Need." Chris Thomas listened to the demo for "Funk Song No. 13" and two other tapes, and picked this one because "it was great. I thought, 'I could listen to that groove for 10 minutes!' I said, 'Let's work with that groove.' So we went with that and in just two days it turned into the song that eventually broke them, 'What You Need.'" bit.ly

Formed in Bogotá in 1998 Columbian 5-piece Meridian Brothers Colombia say their forthcoming album 'Meridian Brothers & El Grupo Renacimiento' excavates the forgotten sounds of the fantastical 1970s salsa dura group El Grupo Renacimiento. The group identifies as “B-class” salsa whose music explores human struggles in the urban city landscape, with themes such as police brutality, social marginalization, and addiction.

Good morning John, I'm getting ready to head back to the midwest to help my parents close down and sell their home as they get ready to move into assisted living near my youngest sister in Eugene, OR. This move is hard. My dad was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's and my mom is far older than her years. They have been staying with my sister and her family in Eugene as they look for a place to move into and while there is much love, there is also much sadness and the need for patience. My other sister and I have been working from our homes in Seattle and Reading, PA to get the foundation laid for the move as we get ready to fly to Illinois to support our parents with the sale of most of their possessions and home. I could not begin to do this without my sisters, Katie and Thomasina. I feel so very fortunate to have them at my side during this journey. I was hoping you could play We Are Family by Sister Sledge in support of all those families, chosen and born, who pull together to support each other. We are not alone, Amy Seattle, WA

Featuring Tanya Donelly from Throwing Muses, Breeders, and Belly on vocals. "How was it singing with Tanya Donnelly on "Judy Staring at the Sun?" Rob Dickinson and Brian Futter of Catherine Wheel were asked in an interview. "It was fun. We actually did our parts separately, I did my bits in England and then me and Gil flew to fort Apache in Boston and Tanya did all her parts in about six hours. Then we took it back to England and pulled it apart and put it back together. It was kind of a disjointed way of doing it but it worked out very well." bit.ly

Hot Chip's eight album, "Freakout/Release," due out in August, is their first album in three years. The album features contributions from Cadence Weapon, Soulwax, and Lou Hayter. “We were living through a period where it was very easy to feel like people were losing control of their lives in different ways,” Joe Goddard said. “There’s a darkness that runs through a lot of those tracks.” -- Hot Chip was officially started by vocalists Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard in 2000, but the duo had actually been making music together since 1991.

"What Have I Done to Deserve This?" marked Pet Shop Boys' first major collaboration with another recording artist (Dusty Springfield). The song was originally written and demoed around Christmas 1984. It was originally intended for use on Please (1986), but the problem was to decide who’d sing the other half of the duet. Various contemporary singers were suggested to them, but none of them seemed suitable for the song. Eventually their manager’s assistant suggested Dusty Springfield, whose album Dusty in Memphis (1969) was often acknowledged by Neil Tennant as his favourite LP.

Ben Gibbard describes "Roman Candles' as a concentrated effort to create something “succinct, loud and strikingly direct,” sharing that “the lyrics were cobbled from a couple of different songs dealing with my general sense of anxiety; the feeling that the fabric that weaves a functioning society together was crumbling during the pandemic.” Death Cab for Cutie will play The Paramount Theatre on Wednesday and Thursday, October 26th and 27th. -- Don't miss the video for this new song: www.youtube.com

Good morning, happy Tuesday, and welcome to The Midday Show with the fabulous Cheryl Waters! Thanks for listening! -- Atlas Sound sampled the previous song, The Dovers' "What Am I Going to Do" here. ---- The song came about when Atlas Sound began to tour as the opener for Animal Collective in Europe. Bradford Cox states: I toured for a period in Europe with Animal Collective, whose band dynamic was very inspirational to be around. On the bus, we often played improvised iPod games. We would take turns formulating a theme or unifying concept and then play three songs. The goal would be for everyone to try and figure out the theme. During one of these games, someone played 'What Am I Going to Do' by the Dovers. I was amazed at the hook-- a weird organ thing with drums and electric bass. I mentioned to Noah [Lennox] that someone should really sample that riff. He agreed and he taught me a little about sampling and matching up beats. This ended up as the collaborative effort 'Walkabout.'
