The song was driven primarily by Beastie Boy Adam Yauch (MCA). As a practicing Buddhist, he had taken the Bodhisattva vow, which is a promise to liberate all sentient beings from suffering by practicing the six perfections of giving, moral discipline, patience, effort, concentration, and wisdom. Yauch began his serious study of Buddhism after attending a Dalai Lama lecture in spring 1993, in the midst of recording the Check Your Head album.
"The general concept behind the song," Yauch said, "was to take the meaning of Shantideva's text, at least on the level that I understood it, and compress it into a modernized, three-verse rhyming song."

"It is no secret that I am a big admirer of the Pixies. I discovered them way back in 1989 when a school friend slipped me a cassette of Doolittle. I was 14 and up to that point my musical world had been almost entirely classical. I was blown away. Their use of contrasting dynamics, unorthodox song structures and multilayered melodies were a revelation to me and have heavily influenced me as a musician ever since. During last year’s lockdown I found comfort in the piano and decided to revisit and rearrange some of my favourite Pixies tracks. This resulted in the release of Pixies Reimagined in August 2020."

“We had a week off in the tour for some reason, due to gig rearrangements and/or whatever, and I flew back to LA, but the band hung out in Seattle and they started jamming about and rehearsing and started putting together a really catchy tune. So I flew up, and the words just flowed out instantly. It’s a great song. The subject is about rioting, really, and when you see them World Trade Organization riots, it’s kind of appropriate. It’s an homage to Seattle, a town that’s never done us any harm. A town we feel quite warm about… great atmosphere, the gigs are always amazing. It feels like home to me.”

Jumping was a big thing in 1992 hip-hop. In April that year, the teenage duo Kris Kross went to #1 in America with their song "Jump," where they promise to make you jump. A group called The Movement reached #53 in August with the club-banger "Jump!", where they implore, "Jump everybody, jump everybody, jump" over and over.
