This track is a direct response to Frightened Rabbit’s “The Woodpile.” “We’d only met once but Scott’s passing eviscerated me. He was my age and very close with several dear friends of mine,” says Mangan, “Either he couldn't see how deeply he was loved by the world, or he didn’t feel worthy of it. How come he could bring joy to so many people but not to himself? I remember weeping as I poured cereal for my boys that morning. This song came very quickly in the days that followed.” danmangan.bandcamp.com

"A Wave Across A Bay" was written in honor of late Frightened Rabbit frontman Scott Hutchison. The track has been released with the blessing of his younger brother Grant, with Frank donating profits of a 7" single of the release to young people's mental health charity Tiny Changes. "I still miss my friend Scott every day," says Frank. "His passing left such a huge hole in so many lives. I wrote this song in his honor and memory, it was hard to write and record, but I think it does the man some small justice.": bit.ly

Porridge Radio have announced new album 'Waterslide, Diving Board, Ladder To The Sky,' which will be out May 20. “’Back To The Radio’ feels like a huge introductory hello or a big ceremonial goodbye." Singer and songwriter Dana Margolin said, "I wrote it at the end of 2019 when we were gearing up for the release of Every Bad and I felt like a lot of things were coming that I wasn’t sure I knew how to handle. The song grew out of a feeling of intense loneliness and being unprepared for what everybody was promising me was about to happen – and a strong desire to escape without knowing what I wanted to escape to. To me there’s a huge feeling of catharsis in this song, of letting go and letting it sweep you away.” bit.ly youtu.be porridgeradio.bandcamp.com

GO ON TAKE EVERYTHING TAKE EVERYTHING "Violet" is the first song on "Live Through This" and was written about the singer’s relationship with Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins. The recurring issue, which unfortunately hasn’t lost its relevance, is the exploitation and (self-) abasement of women, in this case concealed under a veil of romance." Frontman Joe Talbot on "Samaritans": "Samaritans" came about at a time where I realised through counselling that I spent a lot of my life feeling lonely, even though I had such supportive friends and family around. I learned soon after it was down to a certain performative nature to which I related strength to silence, leading to problems as I ended up confused and angry from bottling up my feelings, which in turn then manifested in violence and self-loathing. I wanted to try and explore that in a song that could illustrate that relationship between masculinity and it’s trail of ugly shame and death. www.thefader.com Check out IDLES most recent KEXP in-studio from November: bit.ly

Win Butler released a statement to accompany "Unconditional I": There’s nothing saccharine about unconditional love in a world that is coming apart at the seams. WE need each other, in all of our imperfection. “Lookout Kid” is a reminder, a lullaby for the end times, sung to my son, but for everyone… Trust your heart, trust your mind, trust your body, trust your soul. Shit is going to get worse before it gets better, but it always gets better, and no one’s perfect. Let me say it again. No one’s perfect.

Melt Yourself Down have never been fully attached to a particular scene or sound, but this ability to stand out has allowed them to survive. As musician Pete Wareham puts it: “We don’t fit the archetype. For too long this has felt like a problem, now we have the opportunity to say: We don’t fit in, we’re in the cracks, we’re ourselves.” Of the single, Gaya adds: “In everything I create there is a tension between wanting to fit in, to feel included and the fear of losing my culture or forgetting where I am from. The refusal to fit in whatever narrative an African man of Asian appearance should play in western society. I started not really caring so much, not second-guessing myself or my vocals so much, which was a huge hurdle to overcome.” www.clashmusic.com

Orville Peck will be at Showbox SoDo on Sunday, June 12. bit.ly -- New from Canadian country artist and songwriter Orville Peck. A consummate storyteller, the country rock inspired 'Bronco' plays upon the horse theme so often found in Orville’s work, but this time with an exploration of freedom, breaking free from that which binds us and all that is wild and untamed. 'Bronco' builds upon and follows Peck’s previous album 'Pony' and EP 'Show Pony,' which explored themes of love, loss and loneliness but advances the story arc in a bolder, newer and warmer trajectory. "This is my most impassioned and authentic album to date,” says Peck. “I was inspired by country rock, 60s & 70s psychedelic, California and even bluegrass with everything being anchored in country. 'Bronco' is all about being unrestrained and the culmination of a year of touring, writing in isolation and going through and ultimately emerging from a challenging personal time." bit.ly www.orvillepeck.com

drugchurch.bandcamp.com “I think any profundity in music is best when it’s accidental,” vocalist Patrick Kindlon says. “We wrote a record that we think is fun, and maybe there are a couple moments in it where you pick something profound, or in some small way transcendent, or at least meaningful. That’s the best way. That’s how music is supposed to be. The bands that try to be deep or try to mean something to you — I think they ultimately look silly. I just would like people to stage dive, and if they get something out of it, that’s awesome.”

Released on this day in 2009! 13 years old! "There are a lot of great bands in Vancouver, but there’s just a lot of forces working against them. It’s very isolated; it’s hard to come down the west coast because of the border, and then it’s very far from the next major market in Canada. It’s like twelve hours to the next big city. And it’s Calgary, which is where bad things always seem to happen to us. And there’s no KEXP in Vancouver, that’s for sure. There’s just a lack of venues and there’s a lack of real support for all the great bands that are in Vancouver." - David Prowse bit.ly Enjoy your own copy of Japandroid's "House That Heaven Built" right here, a vintage Featured Song of the Day: bit.ly

Next month, Metz’s Alex Edkins is releasing his first album as Weird Nightmare, and has shared another new single, “Wrecked,” which features guest vocals from Bully’s Alicia Bognanno. “‘Wrecked’ is about missing someone,” Edkins said in a statement. “For me, it’s about missing my wife and son while on tour. Being away has become harder and harder to do. I think most people can relate to it. Feeling impossibly far away from the ones you love and coming to the realization that you won’t feel whole again until you return. “We wrote ‘Totally Fine’ after a long creative drought," the band writes. "We all agreed to take a break from PUP during lockdown, to take some time to deal with our mental health and get some space from each other. After 3 months of not writing any songs, ‘Totally Fine’ was the first thing to pop out. It broke this creative dam wide open, just months worth of pent up frustration all smashed into this one song. After that, we ended up going on a bit of a tear and wrote the rest of the record really quickly. The drumming on this song still blows our minds. It’s so manic and wild and makes the song feel like it’s about to fall apart at any moment, which is kinda like how it feels to be in PUP.” puptheband.bandcamp.com www.puptheband.com
