“We’d only met once but Scott’s passing eviscerated me. He was my age and very close with several dear friends of mine,” says Mangan, “Either he couldn't see how deeply he was loved by the world, or he didn’t feel worthy of it. How come he could bring joy to so many people but not to himself? I remember weeping as I poured cereal for my boys that morning. This song came very quickly in the days that followed.”

"A Wave Across A Bay" was written in honor of late Frightened Rabbit frontman Scott Hutchison. The track has been released with the blessing of his younger brother Grant, with Frank donating profits of a 7" single of the release to young people's mental health charity Tiny Changes.
"I still miss my friend Scott every day," says Frank. "His passing left such a huge hole in so many lives. I wrote this song in his honor and memory, it was hard to write and record, but I think it does the man some small justice.": bit.ly

"Samaritans" came about at a time where I realised through counselling that I spent a lot of my life feeling lonely, even though I had such supportive friends and family around. I learned soon after it was down to a certain performative nature to which I related strength to silence, leading to problems as I ended up confused and angry from bottling up my feelings, which in turn then manifested in violence and self-loathing. Congotronics International (a supergroup composed of Konono Nº1, Kasai Allstars, Deerhoof, Juana Molina, Wildbirds & Peacedrums, and Skeletons’ Matt Mehlan) have announced the release of a new album, Where’s the One?, which will be out tomorrow! This is a project that's been brewing for 11 years, and features s 21 tracks, including live concert recordings and studio tracks produced in the years before, during, and after the 2011 "Congotronics vs. Rockers" tour that featured all of groups and artists mentioned above.

Next month, Metz’s Alex Edkins is releasing his first album as Weird Nightmare, and has shared another new single, “Wrecked,” which features guest vocals from Bully’s Alicia Bognanno.
“‘Wrecked’ is about missing someone,” Edkins said in a statement. “For me, it’s about missing my wife and son while on tour. Being away has become harder and harder to do. I think most people can relate to it. Feeling impossibly far away from the ones you love and coming to the realization that you won’t feel whole again until you return. I was really happy to collaborate with Alicia on this song and I love what she adds to it. Alicia has a one in a million voice. A voice that you recognize immediately and she really lifts the song way up.”

“We wrote ‘Totally Fine’ after a long creative drought," the band writes. "We all agreed to take a break from PUP during lockdown, to take some time to deal with our mental health and get some space from each other. After 3 months of not writing any songs, ‘Totally Fine’ was the first thing to pop out. It broke this creative dam wide open, just months worth of pent up frustration all smashed into this one song. After that, we ended up going on a bit of a tear and wrote the rest of the record really quickly. The drumming on this song still blows our minds. It’s so manic and wild and makes the song feel like it’s about to fall apart at any moment, which is kinda like how it feels to be in PUP.”

"We had loads of arguments about that song, actually. We never argued so much about any song. I wasn't happy with the length of the loop; the other boys wanted it a couple of beats longer than I did. In the end, I won!"

Kim Gordon paid tribute to Karen Carpenter in 2015, telling Mojo: "Her voice was amazing. And her death made you look back at the lyrics. She didn't write them, but she made them her own. How did they pick a song like Superstar?"
Karen Carpenter, the lead singer and drummer of The Carpenters, died of anorexia aged just 32. Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon wrote this powerful homage to Karen, imagining her happy in heaven, looking down at her brother Richard.
This was originally a Plastic Bertrand song. Besides the original French, there is also an English version, "Jet Boy Jet Girl," by Elton Motello, which was released around the same time. Captain Sensible of the Damned also recorded this English version.
In a press release, Victoria's Art d’Ecco described the song as "a cautionary tale about obsession, and how a misguided search for meaning and purpose may lead some to very dark places."
