"I had written a piano idea that was very slow and brooding and eventually tried making it into a sort of intro to this song - it seemed to work well, and was so different from the original iconic driving drums that it felt like a cool way to bookend the song. Wes and I always strive to release covers that feel like we have done something to them, made them our own in some way, while still paying homage to the original. The piano in Wes’ house was out of tune and we had never run the song together before, but we decided to try it and hit record. Meant only to be a demo or something to later work on, there was something about this particular recording that just hit us both in a profound way."

Today Wilco have announced Cruel Country, the follow-up to 2019’s Ode To Joy and shared a new song, “Falling Apart (Right Now)”. The album is 21 tracks long, and mostly done live, with a country feel.
Cruel Country is out May 27, the same day the band’s Solid Sound festival kicks off in North Adams, Mass.

There have been elements of Country music in everything we’ve ever done. We’ve never been particularly comfortable with accepting that definition, the idea that I was making country music.
