The Sunset Tree was released on this day in 2005. "This is a song about how sometimes you are living in a house and you're in high school and your stepfather is abusing your mother and you, and it really sucks. You have to take a lot of drugs to deal with that, right, but you don't have to, I should say. But you probably do. And when you do, they make you feel marginally better but the main thing that makes you feel better is the company of other people who are as damaged as you are or will shortly become as damaged as you are, and you can sense it, because there is an internal sensor if you bear some damage, you have this sensor that says 'That person is either damaged or is getting there, and I think I will hang out with her until things get a little brighter.' I play this for a lovely person who wore a cape to school." ~ John Darnielle, 2011-03-30 - Bowery Ballroom - New York, NY bit.ly For more entertainment, check out this article "“This Year” By the Mountain Goats No Longer Cutting It in 2020": bit.ly The Mountain Goats performed live in the KEXP studio in 2019. youtu.be

This song was written during the Vietnam War. "It was a very moody piece about the world closing in on you a bit," said Mick Jagger to NPR. "When it was recorded, early '69 or something, it was a time of war and tension, so that's reflected in this tune." n.pr

Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil were husband and wife (and future Hall of Fame) songwriters associated with the 1960s Brill Building scene in New York City. Mann and Weil wrote and recorded "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" as a demo, with Mann singing and playing piano. It was intended for The Righteous Brothers, but then Mann gained a recording contract for himself, and his label Red Bird Records wanted him to release it instead. Meanwhile, record executive Allen Klein had heard it and gave the demo to Mickie Most, the Animals' producer. Most already had a call out to Brill Building songwriters for material for the group's next recording session (the Animals hits "It's My Life" and "Don't Bring Me Down" came from the same call), and the Animals recorded it before Mann could.

"White Rabbit" was written and performed by Grace Slick while she was still with the Great Society. Slick quit them and joined Jefferson Airplane to replace their departing female singer, Signe Toly Anderson, who left the band with the birth of her child. The first album Slick recorded with Jefferson Airplane was Surrealistic Pillow, and Slick provided two songs from her previous group: her own "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love", written by her brother-in-law Darby Slick and recorded under the title "Someone to Love" by the Great Society. The Great Society's version of "White Rabbit" was much longer than the more aggressive version of Jefferson Airplane.

Peter Hook & The Light will be here in Seattle at The Showbox on Tuesday, September 13th, 2022. They'll be performing the "Joy Division: A Celebration" concert, where they will play both of that band’s albums in full.: www.axs.com -- Transmission has been considered as Joy Division’s first great song. The track was released as a single on 7 October 1979 following the release of the band’s legendary debut album "Unknown Pleasures" that summer, but it had been written some time earlier. -- Bassist Peter Hook said that the song was a milestone in the band's career. “The first time I noticed anything different was when we’d written a song that weekend. And we had a gig on the Thursday, so we thought we’d play that song at the gig, “We played the new song, which was Transmission - and everyone in the whole place stopped literally what they were doing to listen and to turn round and watch us. It was an absolutely bizarre moment. It really made the hair on your arms stand up and shivers down your spine.”

Writer's Block was the third and most successful album by the band. The record was made with a more experimental and 'indie' approach, and was influenced by the music of John Lennon and Elvis Costello. The album title "Writer's Block" is allegedly a reference to a neighborhood in Stockholm, where the band is based, which has a high concentration of creative artists (hence 'Writer's Block'). Björk explained the line, "There's definitely, definitely, definitely no logic to human behaviour": "At the time I wrote it I was referring to my childhood and probably talking about how I felt more comfortable on my own walking outside singing and stuff than hanging out with humans... I experienced harmony with kids, the mountains and the ocean surrounding Reykjavik and animals I guess but found grown ups rather chaotic and nonsensical." One influence for the video was Russian animator Yuri Norstein's classic cartoon The Hedgehog In The Fog. It was the first Björk video directed by Michel Gondry, who would later helm her videos for "Hyperballad," "Joga," "Bachelorette," "Declare Independence" and "Crystalline." bit.ly youtu.be

I'm listening in Raleigh, NC 3 hours ahead and fading in the late morning waiting for lunch. Was wondering if a hit of Daft Punk could be thrown in soon? Thanks, Mason -- "Lose Yourself to Dance" is a disco and funk song in the key of B♭ minor with a tempo of 100 BPM. Daft Punk expressed that the song was the result of a desire to create dance music with live drummers. Thomas Bangalter elaborated that they wished to redefine dance music as "something lighter or something more [primal]", and that the song is meant to evoke the sense of being unified and connected on the dance floor. bit.ly Singer Pharrell Williams likened this track to David Bowie's classic mid-'80s cut with Mick Jagger, "Dancing In The Street." "'Lose Yourself To Dance' makes me feel like walking down the street in the middle of the night in London and it's 1984, 1985," he told Vibe magazine. "I don't hear '70s in that at all. For me, it doesn't sound at all like a Bowie record, but I feel like David Bowie would have loved that record. He could actually sing it."
