The Smile, made up of Radiohead members Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood along with Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner, have released their latest single, the darkly moody ‘Pana-vision’. It debuted during the series finale of Peaky Blinders. "And I don’t want to hate you
I don’t want to bear
The kind of fascination
That gets in my way"
From Figure 8, released on this day in 2000.
Figure 8 is the fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Elliott Smith, and the final studio album released during his lifetime. It was recorded from 1998 to 2000 at numerous studios and released in 2000.
On this day in 1980, R.E.M. played their first gig as R.E.M. at the 11:11 Koffee Club, Athens, Georgia to 150 people. The show ended at 2am when police closed it down due to the venue being unlicensed. (Their first show was April 5th, 1980 but wasn't under the name R.E.M.)
Released on this day in 1988, which is weird because Jesus was released yesterday.
Ahead of the arrival of 'Once Twice Melody' in February, Beach House with the second batch of songs - “Runaway,” “ESP,” “New Romance,” and “Over And Over”.
Together, the tracks help to add a few more pieces to the puzzle that is 'Once Twice Melody' all while leaving fans waiting for more.
In an interview back in January, Victoria Legrand spoke about her and bandmate Alex Scally’s songwriting process. “I’ve always said music is very personal to Alex and I, but it’s not just that I got my heart broken by this guy or girl, it’s I got my heart broken by the whole world,” she said. “Or all the things I ever heard about somebody’s heartbreak, it’s in me somehow. It’s like this stain and it’s coming out because I hear these tones and these chords and these notes, and they make me feel like crying or they make me completely euphoric. That’s the thing that hasn’t changed, but I think it’s become amplified. And that is why I don’t think we’re done making records.” bit.ly

Prior to recording 'Hurry Up, We're Dreaming,' Anthony Gonzalez moved from his native France to Los Angeles. Describing the move in an interview, Gonzalez said: "Having spent 29 years of my life in France, I moved to California a year and a half before the making of this album and I was excited and inspired by so many different things: by the landscape, by the way of life, by live shows, by movies, by the road trips I took alone... I was feeling alive again and this is, I feel, something that you can hear on the album"

From Minneapolis synth pop group Poliça's upcoming album Madness, due out June 3 via Memphis Industries! In one intreview, singer Channy Leaneagh claimed that they wanted something unique for a band name, and she had a file on her computer which, following a corruption during a computer crash, had come back as "Poliça".
Of the new song, Leaneagh said in a statement, “Bad things happen, the fire goes out; even with the best flammables it stays dark until nothing matters becomes the fire itself.” pitchfork.com
"Our beautiful friend, Paul, died suddenly and peacefully in his sleep this time last week. He was a music lover, KEXP donor, and all around great human… never judging and always kind. He gave the best hugs and sang the loudest at karaoke, showing everyone around him how to live a full life. He spent nearly every Halloween dressed up as Robert Smith.
We most recently spent time with him and his incredible wife, Vicky, at your bar, where we listened to and talked about music for hours. We are so grateful for that time together and are making a donation in his honor today. Can you can play a song by The Cure for him and his family this morning?
Rest In peace, Paul… we love you.
Thank you so much,
Heather & Shawn"

Sparkle in the Rain is the sixth studio album by Scottish rock band Simple Minds.
The waterfront in this song is the River Clyde in Glasgow, Scotland where the band is from. "The song itself is about the rebirth of our city," Simple Minds lead singer Jim Kerr told Songfacts. "It talks about the water, and anyone listening might think it's Biblical. A baptism or something."
New Age Healers will be performing at the Lofi Performance Gallery on April 22nd!

When asked if "Happy House" was a cynical song, Siouxsie replied: "It is sarcastic. In a way, like television, all the media, it is like adverts, the perfect family whereas it is more common that husbands beat their wives. There are mental families really but the projection is everyone smiling, blond hair, sunshine, eating butter without being fat and everyone perfect"
"You have been the soundtrack and mental support to me for many years. I introduced Gayla when we met to the Morning Show three and half years ago and it has become the soundtrack to our relationship. You have played for us Galaxie 500, Tugboat Captain and INXS, By Your Side which are forever intertwined with our memories of falling in love.
Gayla and I got married Wednesday, thank you for being that guide in our lives, we appreciate you in depth only poets can describe.
Could you play Citizen Cope, Sideways which was our wedding song.
Thank you
David & Gayla, NYC"

This album was released on this day in 1989. And every day since has been better for it.
Black Francis has claimed that this song is about "Japanese businessmen doing murder-suicides with their families because they'd failed in business, and they're driving off a pier into the ocean."
The Pixies played Live in the KEXP Studio back in 2014, hosted by Cheryl Waters -- www.kexp.org
"Good morning! I just moved to Los Angeles last week after being a life-long Seattle resident. I miss Seattle; I've been listening to KEXP every day since I got to California and it's so nice that I can still feel connected to my home town through music. Can I request Crosstown Traffic by Jimi Hendrix?
Syd"
Unlike many of the tracks on the album, this recording features the full line-up of the Experience with Hendrix, Noel Redding, and Mitch Mitchell.
Hendrix also plays a makeshift kazoo made with a comb and tissue paper in tandem at points with his lead guitar, and backing vocals are performed by Redding along with Dave Mason. With its hard rock riff, the song is an example and mixture of blues and acid rock.

RIP to Martin Hannett, English record producer of Joy Division, The Psychedelic Furs, New Order, The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, who died on this day in 1991 at 42 years old.

After Island signed U2 in March 1980, the label recommended the band work with Hannett, believing he could improve their studio recordings without losing the energy of their live performances.
Happy birthday to Bez, born on this day in 1964!
"When Bez started bouncing around with Happy Mondays, no one could believe their eyes. But is there more to it than popping pills and shaking a tambourine?"

On this day in 2013, Public Enemy become the fourth hip-hop act inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (the others that preceded PE into the Hall were Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, Run-DMC, and the Beastie Boys).
From the Irish singers second album, the song "I Am Stretched on Your Grave" was taken from an anonymous 17th-century poem titled "Táim sínte ar do thuama". The album was nominated for four Grammy Awards in 1991, including Record of the Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Here's Clyde with a solo at the Boston Garden in 1968. As Biz Markie said "I'm sure people have drummed this well but no one ever drummed better."

This game-changing album was produced with the Dust Brothers, whose use of sampling helped establish the practice of multi-layered sampling as an art in itself. In total, 105 songs are sampled.

A Clyde Stubblefield set, as today would have been his birthday (born 1943). He was a drummer best known for his work with James Brown. A self-taught musician, he was influenced by the sound of natural rhythms around him. His drum patterns on Brown's recordings are considered funk standards. His beat on James Brown's "Funky Drummer" is among the world's most sampled musical segments. It has been used for decades by hip-hop groups and rappers such as Public Enemy, Run-DMC, N.W.A, Raekwon, LL Cool J, Beastie Boys and Prince, and has also been used in other genres. Though the sole creator of his patterns, Stubblefield was not credited for the use of the samples. The man was a genius.
Pizzicato Five was a Japanese pop band formed in Tokyo in 1979 by multi-instrumentalists Yasuharu Konishi and Keitarō Takanami. After some personnel changes in the late 1980s, the band gained international fame as a duo consisting of Konishi and vocalist Maki Nomiya.
Moar! Funky! Drummer!
"Mama Said Knock You Out" is the fourth single by LL Cool J from his album of the same name. The song famously begins with the line "Don't call it a comeback/I've been here for years." Before "Mama Said Knock You Out" was released, many people felt that LL Cool J's career was waning; his grandmother, who still believed in his talent, told him to "knock out" all his critics.
Yo dawg I heard you like funky drummer so I put some funky drummer on your funky drummer
Eric B. & Rakim sampled both Funkadelic's "No Head No Backstage Pass" and James Brown's "Funky Drummer."
Ah, Funky Drummer, the OG.
As Clyde Stubblefield did not receive a songwriter credit for "Funky Drummer", he received no royalties for the sampling. He told the New York Times in 2011: "It didn’t bug me or disturb me, but I think it’s disrespectful not to pay people for what they use." Stubblefield capitalized on the name with his 1997 album Revenge of the Funky Drummer.
