Sunny Day Real Estate formed in Seattle in 1992. “It was literally like watching U2 in 1980 and was one of the five best shows I’ve ever seen in my entire life,” Sub Pop publicist Nils Bernstein said of Sunny Day’s May 1993 gig at Seattle’s Crocodile Cafe, which drew a very sparse crowd. They are reputedly going to tour this spring for the first time in 12 years. Read the report here: www.spin.com

Good morning! The One cover currently playing got me thinking of U2's Miss Sarajevo (that Pavarotti solo!), especially with everything going on in Ukraine and the current suffering of Ukrainian civilians. If you've got room in the queue for one more U2 song, I'd love to hear it over the airwaves... er, internet.--Jonathan in Denver -- The Passengers were a collaboration between U2 and Brian Eno. U2 considered it a side project, so they used a different name. The song is about how the people of Sarajevo deal with war. -- Italian Opera singer Luciano Pavarotti sang on this with Bono. Pavarotti enters this song at two minutes and 53 seconds singing an Italian language libretto written by Bono. Pavarotti's opera lyrics translated: "It's said that a river..Finds the way to the sea...And like the river...You shall come to me...Beyond the borders...And the thirsty lands...You say that as a river..Like a river...Love shall come...Love... And I'm not able to pray anymore... And I cannot hope in love anymore... And I cannot wait for love anymore..."

In the video for this song, a maroon-skinned alien sings Isaac Wood's emotional vocal line while being dragged through an army detention camp by an unsympathetic officer. The song refers to the Wittenoom asbestos mine in Western Australia where blue asbestos was mined between 1947 and 1966. The once-thriving town is now a virtual ghost town. Shops are boarded up, the two schools are closed, the local cinema is derelict. In their ignorance, the original settlers used asbestos in gardens, school yards and roads. Wittenoom is without doubt Australia's greatest industrial disaster and it is estimated that 25% of the 20,000 men who mined asbestos there will die from related diseases. -- Watch Midnight Oil performing "Blue Sky Mine" live in Paris in 2019: www.youtube.com

This samples the drumbeat from Gus Poole's "Hallelujah, Alright, Amen," a funky disco soul track from 1970, and the bluesy sax riff from Joe Thomas' "Venus" (1976). --- Even by Beck's standards, this song has some pretty odd lyrics ("She's got the lily-white cavity crazes, she's got a carburetor tied to the moon"). “Love Vigilantes” is the first song on New Order’s third album, 1985’s Low-Life. It’s a record that established the band’s own unique potency and helped to legitimize the quartet as its own entity separate from Joy Division, its original incarnation. The song is attributed to all four band members (Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert), although the idea and lyrics sprang mainly from singer and guitarist Sumner. -- "...what ultimately makes 'Love Vigilantes' one of New Order’s most memorable tracks is a story with a kind of choose-your-own-interpretation ending.": americansongwriter.com

John, I think you should definitely milk the whole weekend for your birthday. You’ve certainly earned it. For a while, Michael Stipe thought this was too brutal a song to record. He said in 1992: "It's probably better that they think it's a love song at this point. That song just came up from somewhere and I recognized it as being really violent and awful. But it wasn't directed at any one person. I would never write a song like that. Even if there was one person in the world thinking, This song is about me, I could never sing it or put it out... I didn't want to record that, I thought it was too much. Too brutal. I think there's enough of that ugliness around." -- The lead vocal on the chorus contains just one word: "Fire," which Michael Stipe draws out into a long wail. In the background, you can hear bass player Mike Mills singing, "She's comin' down on her own, now."

Remembering 1992.... The Soup Dragons are a Scottish band, but their frontman Sean Dickson was always fascinated with American culture, particularly in New York City. When he lived there for a spell in the early '90s, Dickson (who later came out as gay) spent a lot of time with drag queens and in gay clubs. He became a huge fan of the performer Divine, and wrote "Divine Thing" in his honor. "If you listen to the lyrics it's plainly about him, and his beauty freak iconic culture," he said in an interview.

For Liam and Stella, ages 12 and 9. Mom Allison writes: Oh fun! My kids are home sick...a week of negative COVID's but sore throat, coughing, congestion. They have not gone to school ALL WEEK and apparently they got my phone." == This song and its video are a send-up of heavy metal music, playing up the ridiculous costumes, excessive hairspray and tendency for bands to take themselves just a tad too seriously in a very Spinal Tap way. The title is a play on "No Sleep 'til Hammersmith," which is the title of a 1981 Motörhead live album. -- In order to spoof a heavy metal song, the Beasties needed a heavy guitar riff. That came courtesy of Kerry King, the guitarist for Slayer. Producer Rick Rubin was working with both Slayer and the Beastie Boys (each group was signed to Rubin's Def Jam Records), so he had King come down the hall and put down a guitar part, which he played intentionally out of tune in parts. King also appeared in the video: look for him pushing the gorilla off the stage. -- Here's that video: www.youtube.com

You have the same birthday as my pup Zinnia Stardust! Can we get some Bowie for her?? --Susan This song can be seen as a sequel to Bowie's 1969 hit, "Space Oddity." Built around a hypnotic Peter Hook bassline that mirrors a silvery synthesizer riff played by Bernard Sumner, the song is full of desperation and resentment, sadness and loss. The song is completed with a frenetic drum track from Stephen Morris. "Love Will Tear Us Apart" was a cynical and tongue in cheek retort to the Neil Sedaka song “Love Will Keep Us Together” made famous by Captain and Tennille. The song’s lyrics, in retrospect, were an obvious reference to singer Ian Curtis’ failing marriage. -- Here's the story behind the song: www.loudersound.com
