According to Anthony Gonzalez of M83, this album was inspired by The Smashing Pumpkins' 1995 studio album 'Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness', and the influence of the album can especially be heard on this track. The song was arranged so that "it could still be played solo on an acoustic guitar." pitchfork.com

Moby named the album '18' after the number of tracks that he put on it, and his fondness towards the idea of the title being easily translated and known as something different in other countries. "To many on Chicago’s South Side, T. L. Barrett has been known for more than four decades as an activist and pastor, an influential figure in the city’s black community, and an active participant in numerous projects and initiatives intended to improve social and economic conditions on the South Side. To record collectors, he’s known for recording the classic, much-sought gospel record Like A Ship…(Without A Sail). To the Illinois legal system, he’s the man who fronted a series of pyramid schemes that defrauded thousands of people (for which Barrett was ordered to pay restitution to avoid a prison sentence)." - lightintheattic.net

Kusanagi is more than just a track title. It’s in fact the name of ODESZA's friend and certified “secret third member", Sean Kusanagi. Sean earned this title by playing guitar on each ODESZA project so far. He’s also credited as the person who introduced Clayton Knight and Harrison Mills in college. It’s safe to say that without Sean Kusanagi, ODESZA may have never been. Clayton and Harrison discuss 'Kusanagi' in the Song Explorer podcast here: thissongissick.com

This song arrived in Bob Mould's mental inbox in the summer of 1991. “It was this dream song that just turned up as I was waking up one morning,” Mould recalls. “It came to me fully formed, and then it’s just all the baubles that make it that crazy baroque band thing. All that was pretty much in my head too, but you have to sit down and make these baubles shine. That’s the production stuff.”: www.loudersound.com Check out Bob Mould performing "Hoover Dam' Live on KEXP in 2013: youtu.be

Tom McGreevy, 1/2 of the Toronto duo describes the song this way in a press release: "This song is about personal connection in an environment that is hostile to it, and about friendships with people who are physically distant. Me and Evan have both moved around a lot, and have friends in far-off places we don’t see as often as we’d like. In fact, we partly made this record while Evan was living in Australia and I was in Toronto. Some of those friendships are extremely important to me, and the song is kind of about grasping for those lifelines when it’s particularly difficult to believe that things are going to work out, or if there’s even any point in trying.” www.stereogum.com

Brooklyn's Bodega have announced their second full-length album, Broken Equipment, which will be out March 11th. "Sometime on tour near the end of 2019 I found myself reading and watching a plethora of self-help books and YouTube vids,” says the band's Ben Hozie, explaining the idea behind the lyric. “This started from a genuine desire for spiritual and physical improvement, but I soon started noticing how advertisements everywhere were utilising the language of self-help. I was being programmed. ‘You don’t have time to cook dinner tonight because you are too busy crushing it as a doer: You are creating next level content and don’t have time to hang out w/ friends or family this weekend so download this app and have ready-made food delivered to you for 29.99.’ This ideology of constant productivity forces you to treat your own body, mind, time, and friends as products to mine. As a result, the world becomes a smaller, duller place.” www.brooklynvegan.com

"It is no secret that I am a big admirer of the Pixies. I discovered them way back in 1989 when a school friend slipped me a cassette of Doolittle. I was 14 and up to that point my musical world had been almost entirely classical. I was blown away. Their use of contrasting dynamics, unorthodox song structures and multilayered melodies were a revelation to me and have heavily influenced me as a musician ever since. During last year’s lockdown I found comfort in the piano and decided to revisit and rearrange some of my favourite Pixies tracks. This resulted in the release of Pixies Reimagined in August 2020" -- Kindt via Twitter tinyurl.com
