During a live performance of this song, in Montreal, 2003, Thom Yorke introduced it by saying:
"This is dedicated to our glorious leaders, or at least some of them who saw fit to take us to a war that nobody wanted, kill thousands, if not tens of thousands of innocent people. And they should go to their graves with that on their consciousness."
"I thought the very nature of the song was, you know, enjoy the silence, so it ought to have a very serene atmosphere. It took me a while to get used to the idea, but as we took it further that way with the guitar riff, it really pulled together." - Martin Gore to Select Magazine in December 1990.
John Richards selected 'För Allting' as the KEXP Song of the Day on October 28: www.kexp.org
'Makthaverskan don’t sound at all like they belong in this era. Heavily inspired by mid-'80s post-punk and baroque pop, they sound like they should be a Factory Records-signee alongside Joy Division rather than their (albeit great) home of Run For Cover. Even the slight crackle in their recordings make them sound like a long-lost cassette import your cousin sent you when they went to Sweden for the summer. But, indeed, the Gothenburg-based band is completely of this time and on the verge of releasing their fourth studio album...'

L.A. punk four-piece The Regrettes have just released a new single, “Monday,” that the band’s Lydia Night tells the NME “was inspired by misery, dread and all the fun emotions of the past couple of years,” adding. “It was written at one of the peaks of my anxiety, which I was only diagnosed with recently. After years of feeling a certain way but not identifying with any sort of mental illness, this song was me finding the validation for what I was going through. It was super therapeutic.”

"Hi John & Owen & team
Hope you are all well
We had our first gig for 18 months yesterday - seeing Black Pumas at the Roundhouse London and they were awesome! I was of course wearing my "you are not alone" KEXP t-shirt.
Would love it if you could play a bit of Black Pumas - Colors - which was phenomenal, or something else of your choosing...
ps. hope you've got them booked in for a live session when they play in Seattle next month!
Love Dave & Helen"

100 Days, 100 Nights contains influences from sixties era funk and afrobeat. The album was recorded by Bosco Mann at the in house studios of Daptone Records, using a completely analogue system as well as releasing 45's on vinyl with the intent of creating an old school sound reminiscent of the original funk of the 1960s.

"The Big Beat" is a 1980 song by Billy Squier from his debut album 'The Tale of the Tape'. While it never charted, the song has become a sampling staple in hip-hop music. As of 2020, the song has been sampled in almost 300 recordings.

This is a cover of the Len classic- Stereogum says, "In 1999, a group of Canadian rap heads called Len sampled an Andrea True Connection disco hit and made a dizzy, shambling, glorious one-off. The song went top-10 in a whole lot of countries, including the US, and Len, who seemed utterly bemused by the experience, never made another hit."

Happy birthday to DJ Eric B., born on this day in 1965.

One of the most influential rap albums of all time, Eric B. & Rakim's "Paid in Full" only continues to grow in stature as the record that ushered in hip-hop's modern era. Rakim basically invents modern lyrical technique over the course of "Paid in Full," with his complex internal rhymes, literate imagery, velvet-smooth flow, and unpredictable, off-the-beat rhythms.: www.allmusic.com

"John and Friends,
It's that time of year again. My body didn't get the memo and, despite going to sleep an hour later, I still woke up right when my alarm would have gone off last week (except now it was 4:11am today).
They make it sound so simple and easy: "spring forward", "fall back".
I would like to request an aural kick in the face. LCD Soundsystem's Movement is usually one of my go-tos in cases like this but you do what you do and I'm sure it'll be great.
Thanks!

Fun fact, Monday Morning Show assistant's favorite band is LCD, and this is her favorite song they play live. Talk about an aural kick to the face.
Released on this day in 1980!

Lemmy recalled writing the song in an interview with Mojo magazine February 2011: "'Ace of Spades' is unbeatable, apparently, but I never knew it was such a good song. Writing it was just a word-exercise on gambling, all the clichés. I'm glad we got famous for that rather than for some turkey, but I sang 'the eight of spades' for two years and nobody noticed."He may have embellished the tale a bit for the sake of a story, but Lemmy claimed he wrote this song in the back of a transit van traveling at 90 mph.

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss have released their latest single “High and Lonesome” from the upcoming collaborative album Raise the Roof, the duo’s first album together in 14 years!
tinyurl.com
Raise the Roof will be released on November 19th.
Covered by Led Zeppelin and placed last on their IV album, released on this day in 1971.
Led Zeppelin released their fourth album. With no title printed on the album, and generally referred to as Four Symbols, According to ThisDayInMusic.com, The Fourth Album or Led Zeppelin IV it has gone on to sell over 37 million copies worldwide. The 19th century rustic oil painting on the front of the album was purchased by Robert Plant from an antique shop in Reading, Berkshire, England. The 20th century urban tower block on the back of the full gatefold LP cover is Butterfield Court in Eves Hill, Dudley, England.
The last song on the album, "When the Levee Breaks," a cover of a song written and first recorded by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie in 1929. Clearly an amazing song on it's own, it's also one of the most sampled in music history. Artists who have sampled the drum beat include Beastie Boys on "Rhymin & Stealin" (Licensed to Ill, 1986); Coldcut on "Beats + Pieces" (What's That Noise?, 1989); Dr. Dre on "Lyrical Gangbang" (The Chronic, 1992); MC Lyte on "Survival of the Fittest" (Eyes on This, 1989); Björk on "Army of Me (Post, 1995)"; Massive Attack on "Man Next Door" (Mezzanine, 1998); and Beyoncé on "Don't Hurt Yourself" (Lemonade, 2016) among many others.
Former Nothing But Happiness and Crash guitarist Kurt Ralske started Ultra Vivid Scene in 1987, was signed to 4AD Records in 1988, and released his first UVS EP, She Screamed, in 1988. The debut album Ultra Vivid Scene released October 1988, was written, produced and performed entirely by Ralske. The drums in this song are a sample of "When the Levee Breaks"by Led Zeppelin
The song was produced by Jack White, Beyoncé and Derek Dixie. It contains samples of "When the Levee Breaks"by Led Zeppelin
Another that samples Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks"
===
'[Björk] said “Army of Me” was written as an ultimatum to her own brother, to regain control of his life, lest he “meet an army of me.” Björk scratches at the depths of her voice, and the industrial backbone of the song, the crashes and shrapnel, fortify the task. “Army of Me” is proof that being the most obvious misfit in the room often requires being the toughest, too.'

The vocals for this Neil Young cover are by Moira Lambert.
--
Neil Young's original was rumored to be about Steven Stills, who alienated his CSN & Y bandmates by referring to them as his "back-up singers" on stage, but Young later admitted it was about one of his other bandmates, Graham Nash, who was heartbroken after breaking up with Joni Mitchell (who celebrated her 78th birthday yesterday!)
Another song that sampled "When the Levee Breaks"!
Chapterhouse took the unusual step of rehearsing and gigging for well over a year before recording their first demo tape.
Kiss Them for Me" was Siouxsie and the Banshees' biggest hit in the United States. It became their second and last entry on the Billboard Hot 100 and their first single to hit the top 40, peaking at No. 23.
Beastie Boys opened their Licensed to Ill album with this track, which samples John Bonham's drum introduction from Led Zeppelin's "When The Levee Breaks." The group didn't have a sampler when they recorded the album, so getting the Led Zeppelin sample required recording it to a reel-to-reel tape machine and looping it.

Never released as a single in the US, this track still made it to #1 on both the Mainstream and Modern Rock charts
This anti-war song refers to the chemical defoliant Agent Orange used in the Vietnam War; the chemical contained pollutants including dioxin, making millions of people sick and damaging the environment throughout Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia
Neil Finn described in an interview how this song started off with just the title: "Tim [Finn, Neil's brother] and I were having sessions where he'd throw me a title and I'd throw him a title and we'd go off to our respective rooms and write a song. And he gave me the title 'I Got You,' and I went in and I wrote it, and I thought the verse was pretty good but I thought the chorus was only a bit average and I should change it at some point, but in fact it was never changed and it became... it just goes to show I don't know a hit when I hear one really." bit.ly
Today, Neil continues to make beautiful music with his longstanding band, Crowded House. www.neilfinn.com
Tim also continues to create music, and to write musicals/plays too! He recently released an album in collaboration with old friend and one-time Split Enz producer [Roxy Music's] Phil Manzanera. finnmanz.com
