The backing vocals are a unique feature of the track. Credited to Diane Swann, some have suggested that the female voice is actually a band member being put through vocal effects, and the name is actually a joking reference to a “dying swan.” However, in this interview Dianne Swann confirms that she did indeed sing with Thom on this track: youtu.be

Hi, my name is Vasily (VUH-SEE-LEE) , i'm from Moscow, Russia. You know this scary country with nuclear weapons, walking bears, caviar and f’d up president. My band is called Zorkiy (It's actually my surname, in Russian it means "the one with sharp eyes", it's pronounced like you would say Zorkee with a long eeee with the accent on eee), and we made our first english-language release about a week ago. After the quarantine, and all that is happening in Russia today, we understood that we want with all our hearts to try and make something that would be interesting for the world and people in different countries, so we worked hard and made our first record. For a lot of years we, here, are watching KEXP as a window to the wonderful world of amazing new music and we always wanted to become a part of it. It's my honest dream and hope that you' ll find some time to listen to our record. www.youtube.com

Swedish indie-pop quintet is back with their first new album since 2017. För Allting will be released on 11/12 via Run for Cover Records. According to frontwoman Maja Milner, the name Makthaverskan has no real meaning. She stated that "The band name just came from Hugo’s friend who made it up (Hugo being a member of the band), and we thought it sounded cool, so we took it. The meaning is really hard to describe in English, but it’s the female form of someone with a lot of power." makthaverskan.bandcamp.com

Requested by Annie: "Good Morning, John and KEXP! I want to request a song for my husband Chris who is struggling with depression, loneliness, and feeling a lack of self-worth. I'm wondering if you can play Brandon Summers' you are not alone and/or Lea Porcelain's I am ok. Not sure if he is listening right now, but I'm sure many others need to hear that too. I'm also leaning heavily into music these days, dealing with loss and life and everything in between. Thank you for being there for us every step of the way.❤️" == "'I Am Ok' describes a time in everybody’s life that make you lose faith in yourself, in someone else, or in life itself and you just need to hear from someone that one day everything will be OK again. “‘Come By’ is about the moment a long flirtation crosses over into more between two people who are both healing from long partnerships that ended unexpectedly. It’s a new beginning, that none of them envisioned for themselves. It’s a much-needed leap forward, and although there may be a lot of past relationship baggage hanging over, or seem too soon after a breakup, there is an ask to set that all aside and go for it. To let yourself enjoy the moment and take a leap with a new person,” says Biell. Read more here: glidemagazine.com

Happy 70th to Bootsy Collins! Some history for you: In March 1970, after most of the members of James Brown's band quit over a pay dispute, Bootsy’s band, The Pacemakers were hired as Brown's backing band and they became known as The J.B.'s. (They are often referred to as the "original" J.B.'s to distinguish them from later line-ups that went by the same name.) Although they worked for Brown for only 11 months, the original J.B.'s played on some of Brown's most intense funk recordings, including "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine", "Bewildered (1970)", "Super Bad", "Soul Power", "Talkin' Loud and Sayin' Nothing", and two instrumental singles, the much-sampled "The Grunt" and "These Are the J.B.'s". Bootsy joined up with Parliment / Funkadelic in 1974. -- This song was one of the first to bring together the songwriting team of George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, and Fuzzy Haskins. The line "get down for the up stroke", an inversion of this track's title, is used during the final section of Prince's 2004 song "Musicology."
